That's insane! Grats! I can't imagine you beating it on your first try. I wonder what your entire load out was to not find him difficult. I thought he's shockingly hard compared to everything else in the game.
I beat him on my 2nd try :(

I actually don't find him too difficult. His moveset is pretty readable, and I can tell what's happening on my screen. He just tanks a lot of damage and hits really hard. He also spawns adds, which is actually one of the harder aspects of the fight. I felt badass when I beat him because I was skillfully dodging all his moves.

The clocktower boss... I have no idea what's happening on my screen for the final phase. I just try to tank through all the nonsense and DPS her down. Not a difficult fight, but I really dislike it.

Guys, sorry if this is asked frequently, but I would like some help understanding how shields work. The other day I made it to the clocktower and got excited about a seemingly good shield, but I died pretty quickly trying to understand how to use it. How am I supposed to use them?

So I've unlocked the first two runes, and I've made it as far as the clock tower. The only blueprint I've finished is the ice bow, because I really don't want to dilute the item pool. I wish there was a way to try out the items before making them, to see if you like them or not.

I've beat the first boss several times now, but is there a way to shut down or deflect his red electric bubble phase?

Just wanted to say that I love how awesome this game feels. Barring the framerate problems on Switch, everything feels incredibly polished and just running around feels great. The Prisoner is very responsive and agile and just linking some jumps, wall jumps and rolls looks spectacular, while in fact beign something really easy to do. The explosions, screenshake, rumble, different sounds on different events (like when landing a crit) all give you valuable information and make the world feel tangible. And the Prisoner´s animations, his smooth movement and the way he links all actions feels incredible. Props to the devs, this is Nintendo levels of polish.
Yes. I love everything about how the game feels to play. At the end of the day my favorite games always have this in common. You don't have a great game IMO unless it feels great to play.

I have yet to see an electric whip good enough to make me want to use it... the auto-targeting is nice and all but the DPS is just too low. Don't think I've ever had a legendary one drop though
I got a gold one once. Is that Legendary? It had a very high DPS for lower levels. It was awesome.

It's not ideal, but the Daily Challenge can pull all kinds of items, included those you haven't unlocked or even found the blueprints for yet. I like going in just to be surprised by weapons/equipment I had no idea even existed.

The final phase adds a bunch of stuff, yeah
  • Swords falling from above
  • Shuriken combo of 5-7 in a row. Fun to parry them all
  • Melee combo might extend to 3 swings
  • After one dash attack, she immediately does a second one back the other way

Aside from a couple of exceptions, you can use a shield in two ways.
  1. You can hold the button to hold the shield up. This will partially reduce the damage you take from attacks and will deal some damage back to the attacker. I think it even reflects projectiles like arrows.
  2. You can tap the button to parry an incoming attack. This will completely negate any damage and will deal critical damage back to the attacker. It will also bounce bombs away from you and make them damage enemies. With some shields, parrying activates extra effects

The stats at the top of a shield show how much damage they'll reduce while holding it up. Most are 75%, but a couple are more, and the parry shield has nothing because it can't be held up. Then two damage numbers - the first one is how much it will hurt the enemies if they attack while you hold it up, and the second is how much it will deal on a parry.

Well, my second run in to the final boss was ezmode. I feel like this game is honestly 90% luck and 10% skill in avoiding hits. The damage cap is so moronic and totally makes it less fun to experiment, also making slow weapons like broadswords feel like troll weapons. It was smooth sailing with my colorless turret and fireball thing, plus a decent crossbow trap and a legendary melee weapon I didn't even use because it's too dangerous against anything not frozen at the castle. I melted the boss in like 30 seconds and felt little satisfaction in doing so thanks to the poor balancing making a Torbjorn build the most appealing.

So, I'm at this weird point where I am awful at Dead Cells, and I don't really enjoy roguelikes (this is my first one), but I simultaneously don't want to play anything else. Im staring down Okami HD thinking, this is waay too slow, and I keep coming back to Dead Cells despite being resigned to never finishing a run.

A few days ago I got to the HotK after a 45 minute run only to be decimated by the second batch of elites. And it kinda just sapped my will to play anymore. I think it's more of a genre thing, but having to start from the very beginning -- especially with how repetitive each biome is -- really saps the longterm fun for me. And yet, the combat is so mindlessly enjoyable that I still prefer bashing enemies here than actually progressing in a 40 hour game.

What do you mean damage cap? Could you elaborate?

Against bosses, a single hit can't do more damage than 5% of the boss's health. It handicaps slow weapons against bosses while fast weapons are still capable of killing them very quickly.

I think they implemented that at some point in early access when damage scaled differently to prevent people from 1-shotting bosses, but I don't see any reason for it to be necessary anymore.

I hope everyone playing Switch handheld is at least using headphones. The soundtrack is so goddamn good. I missed The Castle song the first time I made it there, but was playing docked the second time.

It's a really stupid mechanism.

Also, i guess my game is glitched? I beat the final boss on a second run after the first but he just disappears instantly with no death animation and I'm trapped in the room. I reloaded my most recent cloud save, redid the fight, and it happened again. Am I missing something?

frost! freeze him and just wait till it´s off

that´s why i vehemently disagree with "it is a 99%/100% skill based game!" which already led to a discussion in this thread .-) with a lucky loadout the game is no challenge at all while with other loadouts it is really hard. and this is all based on luck like the enemies in the addspawn of the final boss

Most of my runs now I don't even bother with Brutality weapons. Use them until I can dump them for an all Tactics build.

You have to use the ability you got the first time you beat him (click the right stick), and go down the drain again

lol, I see. Don't think that will be a problem for me, since that seems like an insanely high cap. I don't think I've ever come even CLOSE to doing that much damage against a boss. That sounds insane. Like, if you're doing 5% damage per hit, you're pretty much guaranteed to win anyway.

What use does the R3 mechanic have (detach your head)? I seem to have gotten it after beating HotK

Reached the final boss again today, with almost the same load out as my previous successfull attempt. The only difference was that my Ice Grenade didn´t recover my arrows (and that my bows weren´t legendary, but they dealt incredible damage either way)...well that was enough to lose by a hair. I hadn´t given enough value to that perk, but it was vital to get rid of the addspawns quickly and to damage the boss constantly. I´ve learned my lesson. Anyway, Ice Bow + Heavy Crossbow is a killer combo.

Lots of people complain of the damage cap, but I wonder if they they understand basic math... a 5% cap means you will kill the boss in, literally, 20 hits. That's it.
Is that killing the boss slowly? Are really fast weapons able to kill the boss in LESS TIME than what you need to do 20 attacks with a heavy weapon???

My experience says that even with high end weapons you usually don't hit the damage cap. I don't see the boss life bar reducing in 20% with just 4 hits. I think the bosses have all some kind of armor value, and they only receive a % of damage you do.

Just got this game the other day. I'm addicted to it.

Anyone have any tips for me? Progression below:

The farthest I've gotten is in the Sepulcher. I can grow vines and use those red statues to teleport.

Yeah, it's possible to melt bosses REALLY fast with a combination of traps and DOT effects if you've pumped your primary stat high. I just fought him and took out his first 25% in about 1 second. I still managed to lose after that because I didn't have much health and got flustered trying to heal immediately after getting hit instead of waiting for a good opportunity.

Hint: don't try to drink a health potion while he's throwing bombs at you!

Really slow weapons like the explosive crossbow can easily run into the damage cap, especially if taking advantage of status effect multipliers

It seems like every time I get a combo that should be great, I encounter enemies that screw that all up. My Heavy Crossbow + Ice Bow run was going great until the pirate area where the zombies blow up into smaller slugs. There were too many for the ice bow to slow them all down heavy crossbow wasn't fast enough to kill them before they hit me at least once.

Yeah, the only thing you can get is more boss cells by playing on your highest available difficulty

Yeesh, I figured you'd at least get a new blueprint or a big batch of cells/cash for the kill.

Have finished the game 3 times in a row now without dying. Once you get it down, it's automatic. Guess it's time to try the harder difficulties.

I feel like ive gotten really good. I can breeze through every level now... but when i get to that one boss... the hand of god(or something) i get rekt... i use wolf traps, crossb-o-matic, legendary swords and ice bows and can own every other boss and level. I cant figure out how to kill him before losing all my life.

Anyone have any tips for a tactics build to beat HotK?

I've gotten to him multiple times now, i actually have no problem doing so but my turrets (or any combination thereof) don't seem to do the trick. I can't seem to out DPS him ( know there's a damage cap) but i also can't seem to avoid a lot of what he throws out with how small the stage is (which is probably a matter of 'git gud' on my part)

I've decided to shift gears and grind cells to increase the quality of my drops which probably won't help much given the damage cap

:/

Is there supposed to be something in the secret area of the starting room? The thing in the top left that you have to jump and then roll to the left?

I get a message saying it's a secret area but it's empty.
