Apparently Zach Smith had a substance known as "Libido Max" in his car when the DUI happened.

It's just me, or the last episode of the podcast not actually available? (I'm on Apple)
Give it a try now. I re-uploaded with a different episode title. There's a possibility that my Finebaum joke didn't sit well with someone there?

Episode 50 - Jury Duty and Southern Lawyas

We do our ACC Preview. What we say will shock you (Clemson is really good). Mike had jury duty and tells us at the end a little bit about that.

Maryland president needs to write his thoughts down. Anyway, looks like they're going to pin everything on the training staff only - not the coaching staff. Although the university will accept all responsibility over the situation and they apologized to the family. AD and President was there. Don't know if DJ was...

Will wait on more investigations to see what to do, if anything, regarding the coaching staff allegations. Not ready to throw anyone under the bus with those allegations, though - unlike with the training staff.

A lot of this just stinks of "... well we got caught so we gotta fire somebody"

Ridiculous that it took two months after a player died for the S & C coach to get fired

I could be wrong, but i don't think they placed the coach on leave until ESPNs article about the toxic culture of Maryland football came out, presumably wouldn't have done anything otherwise.

Alright, alright, I have tried to avoid the hype machine tearing its way like a tornado through Nebraska. The state is getting overhyped like crazy, thinking we are back when we are clearly not going to be, and even more so with the schedule that we have.

We had a shit season last year, to be sure. Lots of hilarious bad breaks and ball bounces that could never have been predicted, but even with all of that, we simply did not have the talent, development, or coaching to win close ball games.

I feel very, very confident that the coaching aspect has been fixed. Strength and conditioning will be fixed, and there have been some decent pickups and transfers that will be playing this season, but considering our schedule, I feel like a 7-5 season, I am happy. 8-4 and I am ecstatic. Anything higher than that, I will feel like we won a championship, emotion-wise.

Here are my "tales from my ass" projections for the season, game by game:

Akron - Nebraska makes a big splash, tries to get on the national conversation of "being back" (a year or two early, at best), without giving too much away about their playbook and schemes for more difficult games soon after. W 42-10

Colorado - An old rivalry comes back home. When we stopped playing Oklahoma annually, Colorado became our de-facto rivalry game, even though we usually just beat them. It was the defining end to a lot of seasons, for better or worse and it will be exciting to play them again, especially since they don't SUCK anymore and are merely just an ok team, much like us, I suppose. It will be interesting to see if they can overcome their disappointing followup to 2016's decent season, since that is exactly what we are dealing with. It's at home, we are going to be fired up, W 31-21

Troy - After having one of their best seasons ever at 11-2, including a victory over North Texas in the New Orleans Bowl, this will be an interesting matchup. They won't have the talent of Colorado, but will have desire in their hearts and Nebraska is their lone Power 5 matchup this season. If they are looking to underline another surprising season, they are going to need a victory here. If they win at Boise State to open the season, they will coast through Florida A&M and play Nebraska tough, knowing it's worth a possible top 25 ranking if they win. Maybe Nebraska gets caught looking ahead to Michigan, too. I think overall talent is obviously in Nebraska's favor, as well as coaching, but with a new staff, new QB, new defensive scheme, etc, I think Nebraska will just eke out a win here: W 35 - 31

@Michigan - I feel like Michigan is on the cusp of exploding this season. Either for the better or worse. MSU is still not at 100%, OSU may be hampered by the Meyer situation, and Penn St is reloading after losing some veteran standouts. If Harbaugh puts his khakis on right, this could be the season they finally line their ducks in a row, but they have one of the most difficult schedules of anyone this year. If they beat ND, they have two relative cakewalks to gear up for a possible 3-0 Nebraska. They are probably overrated at preseason #14, considering they sucked last year, but it being in the Big House, and the Huskers' first real test of the season, Nebraska probably loses this. I am just hoping we don't go out without a fight: L 17 - 28

Purdue - Talk about a team that was as snakebit as we were last year. Perhaps even moreso, since Nebraska just looked empty and deflated even when we won, but Purdue lost heartbreak games to Louisville, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and Nebraska. They almost certainly circled the Huskers on their calendar this season for one they want to have back. I know they will be hungry, and they have a great staff. They have a decent schedule leading up to the game with Nebraska, but no world-beaters, either. They could feasibly be 4-0 leading up to the game and still be unranked, or go 1-3 and it wouldn't shock me. I don't know much else about who they have retained and who has graduated/been drafted. Because its Purdue and its at home, I say: W 33 - 24

@ Wisconsin - Our toughest opponent since joining the Big Ten. They have eaten our lunch, called us their bitch, and we have taken it. I doubt this year ends up any different in the W/L column, and I expect to be beaten soundly, but for our players to not quit this season like they have in nearly all Wiscy matchups over the past 7 seasons. Wisconsin is not a high-powered offense and won't put up big numbers, but their physicality and depth will win the day here, along with their cake schedule leading up to the game: L 21 - 36

@Northwestern - I have enjoyed the Northwestern matchup over the years. They have played us very tough and have come out the victor multiple times because of it. This is my favorite game of each season because it always seems like win or lose, it is good, clean football being played by two teams who are invested in the game. Coming off one of their best seasons AND a bowl win should give them the necessary juice to keep Michigan and Michigan State close (may even squeeze out a victory from one or both of them if they get lucky), so it will depend on if they are jacked or demoralized coming into the game. I am betting jacked, leading to a Husker loss :( : L 28-31

Minnesota - No way we lose this one. This was a true embarassment to lose last year. We are winning it. I don't care. W 42- 27

@ Ohio State - If Urban Meyer is coacing. We lose 24 - 49. If he isn't, we lose 24 - 42.

Illinois - We punish these losers on a rebound game: W 45 - 17

Michigan State - Overrated in the preseason in my opinion, but obviously a well-coached team with depth on their roster. We lose 28 - 39

@Iowa - The Hawkeyes can suck a fat one. Every kid in Nebraska wants Nebraska to win this one. Especially because it is in Iowa City this year and they have eaten our lunch 4 of the past 5 years. Fuck Iowa. W 24 - 20

7-5 Record. An okay chance at 8-4, a better chance at 6-6. I don't think we end up on either side of those two numbers unless we get unreasonably unlucky or lucky, unless Scott Frost's magic touch is just that powerful. He coached a hell of a season last year in Florida, and definitely didn't back down to anyone, so I know the Ohio States and Wisconsin's of the world won't scare him, but I think the young team needs a lot of seasoning and there is too little depth to be great this year, worse if we start getting injury plagued like we have for many of the past few seasons.

Happy College Football season to all of you (minus the Texas Longhorns fans, you can all die of boils in a fire!)

Seems kinda late in the game to announce being a grad transfer but looks like Monroeski and co are getting one of our guys this year and he can play immediately

We just lost a senior for the season that was expected to get a good amount of playing time (if not start) so he'd at least be a nice option to plug that hole if needed. Don't know that I'd expect Bonney to play much but the transfer connection is that our DB coach was at Texas a few years back so who knows.

Seven years and counting since Texas played Nebraska. Seven years Nebraska has been in a different conference to forge new rivalries yet Texas still gets under Nebraska's skin more than any other team they play. The salt fuels me. Just like aggy, if playing Texas is that important to your identity then yall shoulda stayed in the big 12. No take backs!

Apparently Bonnie was also one of the last three Mack brown recruits left on the Texas roster. Now we just have two left

No personal hard feelings, of course but Texas just gets under my skin. Seeing them fail over the past 7 years has brought a tear to my eye of joy to block some of the tears of sorrow at my own team's misfortunes and ass-sucking. Obviously most of that stems from you guys routinely running roughshod over us. I think, even if we played again, regardless of coaching, ranking or anything else, you guys have enough juice left in that monkey paw to do it again.

It was an embarrassing loss but it wasn't like Texas was a good team with the ranking or anything. I would compare it to Alabama losing to Louisiana Monroe

App. State was a champion.

Kansas was Kansas.

Texas has the more embarrassing loss.

.

(Hot take time) Which is why I don't rank App/Mich super high on my "most shocking upsets" list. It was obviously an important and momentous one, but Armanti Edwards was an absolute baller, plus App State had just won two straight FCS titles. I looked up the computer rankings awhile back for 2007, and App State was in the 40s. They were a good team, and Michigan was overrated.

It was a shit Texas team, sure, but Kansas's only other win that season was Rhode Island. Oklahoma beat them 56-3 a few weeks earlier.

NCAA need to just come out and say they will never, ever shut down a football program again no matter what they do instead of this joke they have now.

andycapps which first year coach will have the best chance of being successful year one in the SEC? Chad Morris? Jimbo? Etc

Putting my money on Jimbo Slice. A&M has nowhere to go but up, considering the abysmal way they have used their recruiting classes in the past few years. They probably lose the 3 games that everyone expects them to (Bama, Auburn, Clemson) but could eke out a win or two in the 2 games that they are possibly considered toss-ups at this point (USCe, Ole Miss) and should win the rest. With SEC bias, a 3 or 4-loss SEC West team is still ranked in the top 25 and it would be something to build on for 2019.

SEC top quartile is Yeti, the rest is Ozark Trail all the way. Knock-off gimmicky shit constantly trying to emulate the top tier, but definitely not understanding how they got there.
This is astonishingly on-brand.

This bit of detail from Nicole Auerbach from The Athletic was new to me.

"You're called the p-word, characterized as not being a man, if you can't finish things. It makes it tough. It's not an environment that I wanted to be part of. I'll leave it at that."

That type of language was being used on the afternoon of May 29, according to the ESPN investigation, as McNair struggled to complete an offseason conditioning workout at which Durkin was present. Players present told ESPN and lawyers hired by the McNair family that Wes Robinson, Maryland's head athletic trainer, ordered two players to "drag his ass across the field!" when it became clear that McNair was exhausted.

Lot more details about how cold water immersion treatment is done and how it could have helped if it was done. Basically, they did everything wrong. Didn't take his temp, didn't do cold water immersion, didn't call EMT's for an hour. Etc.

That program literally kills kids and insults them while doing it. What's going to happen? A couple of scholarships lost and a fine or suspension. That's all this kid's life is worth. Fuck these programs.

I actually somehow missed the detail that the guy that told the players to "drag his ass off the field" was the head athletic trainer. I read it as being the strength and conditioning coach. Instead, it was the guy ultimately responsible for making sure that these players are fine medically.

Fuck.

You would expect some of this nonsense 30 years ago, when kids were denied water for entire practices as punishment sometimes, but in this day and age? In Maryland? Should be criminal charges and civil charges brought against the school and its employees.

The question is if Pruitt can do the same at Tennessee.

He can't

Course he can't lol not to the same level anyways. Not writing off his ability to string together one or two seasons of a title chase, but that'd come way down the line.

UGA was better built for a quick turnaround with a competent coach...just didn't realize Richt's first couple seasons were eerily similar. Gives me hope :)

But yeah, y'all are probably getting a title sometime in the next 5 years. Just a matter of when.
