I saw this tweet the other day about some guy offering a supposed sealed copy of Wario's Woods on NES. The raffle is not what caught my eye, not even the fact he had a sealed copy of a NES game from 1994 (famously the last first party title for the console well into the SNES' life). WHat caught my eye is what I saw in the lower left corner of the box:

The first game I ever remember seeing with that rating plastered on a box was for DKC1 which I got on Christmas day 1994. Its crazy to me that around that same time I was getting my mind blown by the SNES and its prerendered jungle sprites the NES was still alive so much after its successor was riding high that games got to be around to have ESRB ratings!

This fascinated me to no end and did a quick Google search of what other NES games got an ESRB rating and it turns out that's the only one.

The NES was truly a force to be reckoned with. Since the N64 every console has died a slow death before the next console has come out and even the SNES was only around for like another year or two tops after the N64 launched but here's the NES launching a new game FOUR years after the Japanese launch of the SNES (three if you count its NA release).

I raise my glass to the little gray machine that could.

EDIT: Requested mods to fix the title to singular since there was only, to my knowledge, one NES game with an ESRB rating.

In 94 I remember anticipating the release of the NES version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Tournament Fighters.

It was pretty cool too, though not a patch on the SNES version I got to play the next year.

I played the shit out of the SNES version. It wasn't until years later in the Youtube era that I learned there was a Genesis and even an NES game with the same name but completely different! It amazes me that in 94 there was still a market big enough to justify these games coming out on a console with hardware from 1983. I take it you didnt own a SNES back then?

Meanwhile, I recently found out Adventure Island IV was the last Famicom game... which predates Wario's Woods by I think 5 months?

And here was me thinking it was a bit crazy for God of War 2 to be released on the PS2 4 months after the PS3 launched.

I never knew the game launched that late.

My favourite is that Fire Emblem: Tracia 776 launched in late 1999, and that was a Super Famicom game!

Side note.

Look how crisp and new that box looks. Hitting me in all the right places.

Having a bland, middling puzzle game like Wario's Woods be the last NES game was so depressing at the time. Like really NCL? That's the best you could do for a swan song on the system? Fortunately in addition to our NES we also had a Turbo Duo, a GB and a Game Gear and about six months later we finally got our SNES.

Yakuza 2 was only localized almost two years after it's Japanese release, in September 2008 for PS2. At that point, MGS4, The Orange Box, GTA IV, Crysis, and Mass Effect had already launched. And SEGA questioned why it didn't sell well...

Too bad Luigi's Mansion is still to come to 3DS, it would have cool for Wario to have had another final 1st party game on a Nintendo console.

Man, this game legit has outstanding in-game 2D art in it. Talk about coming such a long way from Super Mario Bros. O_o Always loved this in the OG Animal Crossing!

It kinda blows my mind on the Japanese side when I sometimes see CERO ratings on PS1 games, mostly due to re-prints (or a couple late releases) after CERO became established. I also wanna say this is true for a couple reprints (and one or two recent new games too) of SFC games as of recent too.

That also reminds me how late Japan got a rating system for video games, compared to the rest of the markets. Parts of Asia were also even later than Japan on this too, as of recent as the PS3/360 titles.

This blew my mind when I found out recently, and that was the Nintendo Power release, the regular SF cartridge came out in January 2000, just a few weeks before Playstation 2 released in Japan lol
