Is this game considered difficult? Got it for my son this morning and by dinner time he's got all 4 runes and made it to what I think is the final boss fight.

I would say getting to the final boss without any Stem Cells activated (difficulty modifiers) isn't TOO hard. Once you start activating more cells, think of it as NG+, is when it starts to get pretty hard. Besides having enemies hit harder/more elites, it limits your uses of health potion.

So how do I unlock more items to potentially spawn at the beginning of runs? Is it just a matter of finding blueprints? I unlocked the "random starter bow" thing but I've gotten the same bow in all 3 runs since then.

Blueprints.

Random Starter only takes from the pool that you have unlocked, as you probably know. And if you only have one non-starter bow unlocked, that's probably why you kept pulling it.

Since I started over from scratch (my previous save was when I played this game last nearly a year ago in Early Access so I wanted a fresh save file to see the changes) I've been keeping my pool of unlocked stuff pretty low. For now, at least. Which basically means rocking an Infantry Bow until I get the blueprint for something good.

Ok thanks. I was a bit worried that I'd spent 20 quid on a game that he'd blown through in half a day. Sounds like there's a good amount of replayability.

Tired of the cheap shit in this game
Fuck those monsters who teleport you back to them, oh yeah I wasn't running from you because of those 4 other monsters or anything

You need to buy them in the cell shop after getting the blueprint.

Ohh, I have to buy them? Just once I assume?

That's interesting. Usually I never spend cells on weapons since I get good stuff from chests or the gold shop and would rather do the permanent unlocks.

so, on very hard (2 cell mode) you can´t refill your health at all?
It should be every other level but not before a boss if I remember correctly. 3 and especially 4 are where they are gone. Healing is done through the cursed chests. I was never good enough for that and gave up at 2 BS.

Are the timed doors really worth rushing past all the potential cells/chests/gold/etc. you'll be missing out on? I did the first one and was pretty unimpressed with the haul so I haven't done any since.
They are worth it. But the first one if you aren't going to make it in 2 minutes you are better off exploring a little. You will get around the same amount of cells from rushing as opposed to killing everything. The others you should make it a point to do and aren't that hard.

Fuck everything about the sewer route. I think you need to complete it to get the spider rune? Otherwise I might never go there again.
Once I got that I never went back. The higher difficulty wasn't worth it when I could make it to the final boss every run going a different path.

Has he been sitting there all day? Most people beat it in 10-15 hours. It is hard but everything is your fault. YMMV on how hard it really is.

One tip for dealing with all that long-range stuff is that you can duck under the Roadhog wannabes' grappling hooks. So if you have a bow, you can just crouch and shoot them without fear as long as you're a little distance away.

Be careful about rolling toward them through their grapple though. If your roll puts you in melee range, they will immediately kick you. They don't really have any cooldown when their grapple misses.

The real threat in that zone is the Inquisitors (magic shooty guys) because without them nothing ever bothers you and you're able to set up and manipulate every encounter.
Instead you're getting shot at from a screen away forcing you to move and act around them instead of precisely when you want to.

A personal suggestion for those of you just wanting to take it easy with this game. It has support for Steam Workshop, and one of the mods avaliable simply change the drop rate of rare Blueprints from 1% do 33%, i believe it raises Blueprint drops across the board too.

This is not too bad of a mod, since it just cuts down on time, You still need to survive and you still need to reach the next checkpoint to KEEP those blueprints, so it does not actually directly make the game easier, but it does seem to speed up progression quite a bit.

There is also a mod that bumps the amount of cells and drops you get on each run, but i haven't done those so i have no idea.

Just an overall though in case you still want to progress on the game without changing the challenge too much, just speeding up the process along.

Finally figured out the right mix between tankiness and DPS for HoTK, which revolved around a legendary heavy crossbow and very high dmg reduction grenades along with a solid amulet. I'd fought him five times before that and inevitably I'd either come in glass cannon style with not enough health/reduction and get shoved into the pits, or excessively tank up but totally lack the damage to get him down. I don't like the boss much at all -- he's pretty much a greatest hits list of annoyances (spikes, extra enemy mobs, gimmick attacks like the flags, and some obscene scaling on his stats) -- but it feels good to get that achievement popping up. Secret best unlock in the game? That "inventory selection" one which lets you decide which category of weapons or skills will spawn when you arrive at a given merchant. There's nothing worse than struggling your way to a merchant only to find a pile of exactly what you don't need and little wiggle room to gamble on a re-roll.

Gold is admittedly something I don't think they have quite right yet, as the jump from + to ++ at the forge gets wildly expensive near end-game and there's not always a reliable means of making cash. Amulets are by far the most profitable drops but rely on encountering elites, which is by no means consistent. But that's the rougelike way: some runs you're flush with money, others you're scraping by. I imagine that balance shifts a bit on the next difficulty up. Now to decide if I farm normal for a few more upgrades or go dive into the start of one-cell...

I did it on my 3rd try with heavy bow and two turrets.

Did you put the turrets at ground level during his normal phase or on one of the platforms?

I may be overthinking this. I tried a barnacle but while it was able to consistently attack him, it did garbo damage as I had already specced for Brutality by the time I found it. Oh well! I'll keep trying.

Yeah, when you buy an item with cells, you get that item immediately for your next run, but it also unlocks that item as a potential random drop for subsequent runs too.

Just finished my first playthrough, and I have to say trying to defeat the bosses in this game with melee is unnecessary risk, traps are OP, I got legendary fires and traps and just chunked all of the bosses. Glad this didn't take me anymore days to finish considering a playthrough is under an hour :P

I finished my first playthrough as well. It took me just under a dozen hours. I thinks thats ok for someone without the reflexes of a kid prodigy. I am struggling a bit with my motivation to go on. My turret and crossbow combo will bring me reliably to the end of the game from now on. That could get boring fast. Hard mode seemed to be a bit too hard. Stronger enemies are ok, but limiting the health flasks as well is a relatively steep increase in difficulty.

Just completed my Brutality run using fire grenade+ice grenade and I literally melted everything, not even the enemies at High Peak Castle had a chance to attack lol

I was playing today waiting on my car to get serviced and was bummed when they came to get me in the middle of a run lol

this game is great

I got to the first boss and did pretty well, got it to half health and then died. didn't have a very good build going so getting a feel for its moves for that long was cool

Any general tips for Conjuctivius? Trying to get the spider rune but this dude is generally handing me my ass. I don't have problems with the tentacles so much, they seem easy enough to dodge with patience, but I can't get much DPS on the guy with him warping around the level so much. Traps and what-not seem useless because of that. Also, the light bullet-hell sections usually chunk quite a bit of my HP, without a shield I'm terrible at avoiding them.

shield, parry when he comes with the dash to you, leaves enough time to give him a few hits. a shield is also good for the bullet rain. this boss is tremendously easier with a shield, makes the fight shorter

I'm having fun with this, but I'm terrible at it lol. I guess I get to a boss fight, guy with multi-arrows, and I die very quickly lol. :(

Thank you! Finally beat it, didn't find a shield but I had a swift sword, couple of turrets and some mean synergy going on. Got the spider runs then got owned after I flipped the switch in the next area.

But still, mission accomplished! Now to check out all those areas I couldn't get to before...

Got HotK down to 30% on my second try but my build was absolutely perfect

Gonna be tough as hell to finish this dude with anything less than glorious items

I swear the Ossuary is harder than like every other area in this game. Fucking Slashers are straight up impossible if you don't have solid ranged options or a freeze, and those proximity damage totem things are often placed in horrendously obnoxious locations.

I usually have enough damage to tear through them before they can do much, and if I don't then I just run away. The totems have really low health, I just rush them and take them out straight away. That said, you can probably have a freezing ability 90% of the time by the time you reach that zone and I agree it makes it a lot easier.

I took the Hunter's Grenade with me all the way to the Clock Tower. I extract a blueprint (Wave of Denial) and I'm nearing the escape. I use one of those teleporter stones and it teleports me right into a cluster of bombs from those mortar enemies and I die with my blueprint. Awesome D:

Anyway way to quickly retry bosses? Got to the clocktower boss for the first time, I have a 100% chance of dying, and would like to be able to retry if possible. Someone mentioned quitting at the right time does the trick? Does this also work in regular levels? Any help would be appreciated.

Man, I suck waaaaay too much at this to keep trying. God knows how many runs I've done, and the farthest I've gotten is the village. I feel like I've hit a plateau with unlocking weapons and shit too, I'm not finding blueprints anymore too. I'm getting sick of seeing the same three or four levels five times every hour, you really need a certain mindset to get any mileage out of games like this. I've been forcing myself to get accustomed to it becausen I bought digital and can't trade it in, that's twenty dollars I could have spent on Okami or Iconoclasts

I know it's cheating but if you quit the game right as soon as you die and reload you'll be at the start or mid of the level and everything will rng as it did before you died.

I had to do this when I died carrying two rare blueprints because honestly fuck rng sometimes :)

Made it to the Throne Room for the first time. Holy hell that was a tough fight. Died before I had a chance to heal. He was one shotting my turrets. Was a fun run though! Went to clock tower for first time, beat that, went to castle for first time, and got boss to about 75% health. Had two colorless items, a shield and the dual daggers I think? Plus two level 7+ turrets.

Loving this game!!

I´m loving this game so much, specially how the different weapons and powers completely change the way you play between attempts. My prefferred build is using a shield and a heavy sword, with an ice grenade or a turret to help while I parry and attack back. However, I just unlocked the assassin´s blade (critical damage from behind) and the power that teleports you behind an enemy and I´m loving this new way of fighting, with mutations that give me more DPS when surrounded by enemies and such. Or using the impaler and rolls to push the enemies against the wall and get criticals.

In one of my first runs I got a huge energy ball that moved very slowly forward and completely destroyed everything in it´s path. With Wolf traps and ice effects to slow down enemies I managed to get to the castle before unlocking my first rune, thanks exclusively to that power. Now I can reach the castle in most runs, I still get destroyed there and I´ve never found again that power :S

Anyway, amazing game, I´m having a blast!

Ugh, I'm like five hours in on Switch but the frame rate is soooooo bad in later levels. After the concierge, the game just can't keep up, you're almost always hovering around 30fps. I wonder if it's worth just picking it up somewhere else now...

So...wtf is infection? I was having a killer run, great gear, yet I fought 2 elites in high peak, beat them, and became infected and instantly died. Never seen it, no idea what it is or why it melted my health down but it did. Anyone able to clue me in?

Beat the game on the very first run that I picked up a lightning bolt. Hmmm.

The legendary hokuto's bow helped, good god at that 30% dmg reduction
