So let's say SETI finally gets a return on those decades of searching for signals. Its one undeniably from an alien species and it's in all human languages. The message is simple.

"We are your friends. As your friends we must warn you to stop broadcasting, you are in danger."

What do we do as a species? If you were in charge of a major world government what would you do?

Stop. Otherwise all a bad species has to do is drop one big Rock on us from orbit and we're done.

I mean, if we got back one of those signals it would be decades old right? Damage has probably already been done.

If you are interested in this idea I highly recommend the book series The Three Body Problem, its originally written in Chinese and is currently being done as an Amazon TV series I think

We've been broadcasting radio waves for over 100 years. Even if we stop now, they'll keep receiving the signals for that many years afterward.

Somebody read "The Three Body Problem".

Short answer: We'd be fucked. It's literally impossible to get 7 billion people to agree to a single policy. Nothing would change.

Ask them what bills they are paying around here to tell me what to do in my solar system.

For real. Piss myself knowing it's too late and their message was sent a long time ago.

I'd stop and try to convince the rest of the world to stop, too.

I assume the aliens know that the signals have been going out for hundreds of years too, so I assume that if they're still telling us to stop, it's important to stop all the same.

There's no way you can convince the planet to stop using wi-fi. Or any radio frequency, really. We'd be back to the stone age.

I would assume they're warning us about something else. Imagine for a moment that all of humanity is represented by a field mouse that has lived within the comforts of its burrow for as long as it can remember. One day the field mouse decides that the time has come for it to leave its burrow and see what lay beyond. The field mouse pokes its head out of its burrow and observes its surroundings, which appears to be a vast, mostly empty field that stretches for as far as it can see. The field mouse cautiously leaves the safety of its burrow to explore the area around the entrance, and is then snatched from above by a hawk and is dead before it realizes that it is in any danger.

The alien race OP is talking about would play the role of another field mouse or other critter that has seen what the hawk does to the field mice that venture outside their burrows and goes out of its way to warn them to stay put or risk being killed.

This scenario is one of the worst plausible answers to Fermi's Paradox and is the main reason why I'm absolutely against any form of Active SETI. We should be quiet and observe the universe for a very long time before we decide to shout into a jungle we don't understand.

"A/S/L?"

Seriously, I'd just stop and trust that there are no real benefits to them lying about this.

Send the Trump's Space Force, obviously.

'Puny aliens think they can boss us around! Sad! We will show our MIGHT with our Space Force!'

Yeah, this reads like 3BP lol.

We collectively shouldn't, but if there are already too many people/governments knowing about it, it would only take one isolated initiative to potentially fuck all of humanity.
Typically, let's hope this never happens under Trump.

Short answer: We'd be fucked. It's literally impossible to get 7 billion people to agree to a single policy. Nothing would change.

To summarize why we are fucked:

Imagine that you put a bunch of people with guns in a forest, but don't tell them anyone else is there. If you stumble into someone else, you either assume they are friendly or that they are not friendly. If they are not, you assume that they can either hurt you or that they will eventually be able to hurt you. Therefore, the only move to guarantee your survival is to immediately destroy the other person and then hide again. In this metaphor, Earth is like a baby next to a river. Completely expose, making a bunch of noise and no way to fight back.

The latest X-Files season has an alien that comes down and announces that they have been monitoring us and have decided they don't want anything to do with us. He says that they are building a huge 'wall' in outer space to prevent us from crossing over. It was a hilarious scene.

Assuming the aliens aren't somehow right next door and undetected, they're presumably 50+ light-years away or something, so there are still decades of broadcasts which would screw is if that were an issue.

On the bright side if we heard about a threat it would take ages to get here, barring some sci-fi FTL travel.

On the dark side if the threat is equally far away, it would arrive at the same time.

So basically we're probably doomed anyway, but fortunately aliens will probably never find us even if they exist.
