Gorgeous, desolate country. I think you can see most of Reykjavik in 2-3 days. The main attractions are the countrysides.

I'm not sure what the days are like in October, but be sure to check out the Northern Lights if it gets dark enough.

How far out are you talking, in terms of traveling time? Did you stay every night in the city and do day trips or different hotels every night?

Yup! I had the same hotel for like the four days I was there, but I'd head out and just do different stuff during the day. There's a lot of buses and more hand-tailored tours to take you to a lot of the big spots on that end of the country on a day-trip basis. There's certainly stuff to see that requires you to stay outside the city, and if you wanna see some of the more notable things on the other end you'll need to travel a fair bit, but I can't imagine you wouldn't be able to get more than a totally packed trip there just by staying in Reykjavik.

I had looked into driving the entire Ring Road but since we'll only be there October 3-9 I wasn't sure that'd be enough time to do it properly. I have no problem taking long trips out driving/hiking/etc. far from the city.

You can do the entire Circle in one day. The majority of the sights are DIRECTLY along the roadside, No need for hiking at all.
You CAN do the circle in more days if you want, but it might be a waste of time. .

So if you can schedule 1 day for the golden circle to get it out of the way.. Or incorporate stops from the golden circle into your other travels.
I would suggest do the whole thing.

Just look up a tour website and copy their itenerary, and drive the path yourself.

Thank you for your help. We have just booked a nice looking lake-side hotel in Kopavogur. Close enough to the city, but we are more into hiking and outdoor activities so it seems better to avoid the inner-city for our base and as we are hiring a car it will be easy enough to get about.
