I don't like the idea of trophies.

I like to game on the way I want to, not on what a developer tells me to.

I like Achievements/Trophies, but they just can't compare to the feeling of playing outside in the bus or even at College. Assuming platform parity of course.

Hell, even without platform parity actually.

Same with Xbox to be honest and this is annoying as I would love to buy more on switch. But space on my switch and pricing are often an issue as well. Also I do not trust the history purchase on Nintendo like I do on Xbox Live.
What I mean is that: I can still play and download Xbox original games purchased on my 360 ten years ago that are now backward compatible on my X1. I mean this is insane! I'm not confident with Nintendo for the future on that side.

I just can't justify getting a console that doesn't have a trophy or achievement system. It's part of why I adore playing vita games on my morning commutes still. I love that I'm working towards my completion percentage and trophy level.

I recently got a Switch and bought/played Oxenfree for it even though I own it on Xbox.

And honestly? The entire idea of playing a game and not worrying about trophies was super refreshing. I usually use trophies to check-in on game progress, or possible collectibles, or stuff like use a bazooka 25 times, etc....and even though I don't 'trophy hunt' I kind of do.

There was no stress.

That's one of the exciting things about all the Switch games coming out. I literally don't have to worry about trophies.

Just me personally I don't see trophies of one form or another (or none) affecting my purchasing decisions when deciding what platform to play a game on.

Right, so my Wii ID that I made on the Wii and bought games on, is the same ID system as the Switch, correct?
I don't know. Google. I was originally responding to your question of being able to see Wii purchases on your Switch, which I know you can't do. Beyond that, Nintendo customer service is much more equipped than I am.

I'm the opposite, I'll take a Switch version over PS4 version every time because I prefer portability to everything else. Now a days my PS4 is just for exclusives and AAA Western multies that aren't on Switch.

This seems like one of those lose-lose situations for Nintendo.

It all comes down to their first party games- if Nintendo thought an achievement system added value to those games then their consoles would have an achievement system. Nintendo's consoles exist to give them the best possible platforms for their first party titles historically so we can assume from the omission that they don't think achievements add to their own games.

Nintendo COULD roll out an OS-based achievement system just for third party games to utilize, but I have to think that wouldn't get a good reception given that almost every thread here that talks about achievements has people basically wanting them to be back-ported into games like BOTW and Odyessey. It is clear that achievement hunters want them across the board and not like Fortnite voice chat (aka a feature exclusive to third party games).

So then the question is: Could Nintendo have an achievement system for third parties without raising the expectation that their first party games would also have achievements? I don't see how.

Hence no achievement system.

Right, and I was responding to the user who said that they are the same account.

I know the switch one is called a nintendo account, and the wiiu one is called an nintendo id......

I don't even know what the wii one is called.

Thats why nintendos online IID service is so complicated.

Eh if you feel that opting for the PS4 version over the Switch because of trophy then more power to you but I don't care for trophy as they add no value in game other than a pat in the back for doing nothing.

Plus I hate the notification popping up while I am playing the game.

Right, so my Wii ID that I made on the Wii and bought games on, is the same ID system as the Switch, correct?

1 account carries my Wii games and will carry my switch games when I get a switch, correct? (skipped wiiu)

You are aware that the Wii shopping channel is shutting down soon and thus removing the ability to redownload game?

Don't care for portability but Trophies help me get the most of of the game and gives me some sort of sense of achievement for a task, otherwise it just feels a bit hollow. And I get that a lot with Switch titles. But I wouldn't buy a Switch game unless it was exclusive anyways.

No, your Wii games are tied to your account AND your Wii.
In the same way you can't access your ps3 library on ps4 you cannot access your Wii library on Switch.

Hopefully soon Nintendo will wake up and take game level achievements to a system level. They're usually only ten years behind the curve but achievements are on 13 now.

Trophies are awesome when they are random. Lol that's why I love getting them. When they come outta nowhere... that's the best.
Yeah, this is me.

I don't think I have any platinums or 100% on Xbox consoles, and I always forget to see what's needed for an achievement or trophy, but I like the surprise when they pop up.

It's definitely an incentive to choose games on PS4, I was really disappointed Nintendo didn't decide to offer a comparable system this generation.

It's not;

The Wii didn't have an account system and the game was locked to the console but Nintendo did keep a record of what you brought and if had a club Nintendo account you could what you have brought.

Then when the Wii U came around they introduce the Nintendo ID, which was an account system and your games was tied to it. However the account itself was locked to the console and couldn't easily be moved. The 3DS would also later have the Nintendo ID, bringing it in-line with the Wii U.

Then with the Switch. Nintendo introduce the Nintendo account but they also allowed user to sign in with their Nintendo ID, thus combining the two.

All these people whining that a metagame forces you to play a game differently would laud Nintendo for inventing achievements if they added support for them.

I buy the PS4 versions because of controls. The Switch for the moment is only for exclusives or double dipping. If I'm only buying a multiplatform game once, then it's always the PS4 because the Switch is not a system with comfortable or reliable control options.

I'm the opposite. Trophies bring out addictive behaviour in me, so one of the appealing things about Switch is that I decide when I've completed a game.

I couldn't care less about trophies, I don't particularly like having them in games because it turns games into a linear checklist of objectives.

If a game looks cool and doesn't have a platinum trophy and is coming to switch, I'll get it on Switch.
If a game looks good and there's no way I'll be able to have the time or skill to platinum it, I'll get it on Switch.
If a game would be perfect on Switch more so than PS4 but has a platinum trophy list, I'm torn and end up not buying it, or in some cases I'll buy it on both.

I'd love if Nintendo had their own sort of achievement system. Would love it even more if they incorporated those points into rewards/discounts. Imagine buying a game and getting 300 points and then essentially platinuming it and getting another 100 or so points or even if it was a separate currency that you could only redeem at set amounts to help avoid exploitation.

That being said Breath of the Wild was pretty sweet not having any achievement system.

Another thought: Stamps/Stickers and a profile page. earning stickers or stamps for achievements and being able to put a dozen or so on a profile page to show off when people view your profile or when you meet people. Could be fun.

Honestly I'm with the OP on this one (except the bit about playing mostly docked on Switch). It might be silly but I really like trophies - it's one of my favorite parts of the PS ecosystem and a big reason why I buy games on there instead of other platforms. To that end it can be really hard to decide what platform to get a game for. I've taken to doing as follows - if it's a game I want to replay or keep for a really long time (ie several years) I'll buy on PC. If it's a game I'm likely to only go through once, I'll buy on PS4 (may as well get the trophies for it). If it's an RPG or something where I'm going to be playing a lot of it and portability would be helpful then I'll go Switch. It can be quite difficult to decide though - I'm still trying to figure out what platform would work best for Valkyria Chronicles 4...

That's one thing I love about the Vita - it means you don't have to choose between portability (a very big factor for me) and trophies. Ideally there'd be a new PS handheld but not holding my breath on that account.

Trophies and achievements are an after-thought for me. I used to care about them, but after a while it's like "who cares?".

Yup, PS4/Xbox take priority because of the trophy and achievement system. Hopefully Nintendo is able to implement something similar and add some form of communication on the Switch.

Well, I think that have to INSTALL a game on console is a backward thing. The lack of a useless feature is not something people call "backwards".

That's quite the reaction. And given the rest of your posts in this thread, I'm not sure why you're so hostile to something that is basically standard in the industry nowadays (and something that if Nintendo were to implement, you could safely ignore as you do now and literally nothing would change).

Not sure what INSTALLS have to do with anything though. Seems kind of irrelevant.

I feel the same way. i actually had this dilemma recently when trying to pick between the Switch and PS4 version of X Collection (Went with Switch for portability, but I'm still conflicted on that choice). I'm really hoping that Nintendo finally decides to hop on board the standard train and make their own version of trophies/achivements.

Granted, I might be waiting some time. We all know how quick Nintendo is to adapt to a standard everyone else has been doing for years =/

I've been trying to break myself of this, but it's proven really difficult. I'm not the trophy hunter I was in college, since I just don't have the time, but I still default to the PS4 version for a lot of games that I'd love to play on my Switch (Celeste, Mega Man X collections, etc).

I don't even know if Nintendo adding their own trophy system would help much for me; I'm so deeply invested in the PlayStation trophy system already. The real dream scenario for me would be Nintendo allowing their games to pop PSN trophies. But that'll never happen lmao

Yes I absolutely feel the same. I also hope the Online Service will implement trophies. Would be a good time to do so.

So i don't know about anyone else, but when there is a PS4 version and a Switch version of a game coming out and the PS4 version isn't Pro enhanced, i still find myself leaning more towards the PS4 version.
Game by game for me. If I think it's a Platinum I will get or just a rewarding Trophy list, I'm going PS4. If I just want to tinker with some indie or think it's going to be a great plane game, I'm on Switch.

Good to see that there are others that feel the same as me. Of course trophies/achievements are always optional for everyone but for some (like me) they're important to me.

Perfect example lol.....i tried out the Cat Quest demo last night on PSN and i loved it. Simple, fun little action game and it's out on Switch too. Bought the PS4 version because it has trophies, and a platinum too and it seems like a fun easy plat to get.

Would love to see Nintendo incorporate a trophy system

Something like mushroom for bronze, flower - silver and star for gold. Maybe a mario gold statue as a platinum equivalent

Like the OP I do tend to pick ps4 versions over switch and trophies is a factor in that decision

Na, I go Switch or X1 if the versions are comparable, PS4 strictly for exclusives. I don't give a damn about achievements or trophies.

Not irrelevant anymore. Trophies are worth free points/cash now to get games from Sony Rewards. Nintendo not providing that type of benefit is less pro-consumer actually.
You are wrong, this do not change anything.

If you remove these trophies, the games are still playable. So they are irrelevant superfluous thing (in a superfluous medium).
Not having them are not "less pro-consumer", like the fact that you need to install a game is.

People need to learn the differences between something useless that they like with something that hinders the game.

Whether or not they affect the game doesn't take away the aspect of how Sony is now giving rewards for them, which is pro-consumer, as I said. I never said they are the life and blood of a game nor a factor in the game's design.

You simply said they're irrelevant altogether.

That might have been a simple enough answer before but since they are worth something now, you can't say that same thing anymore.

An example of Pro-Consumerism....

Multi platform game with trophies on the PS4 & Switch.
You completed the game 100% on the Switch. Awesome.
You completed the game 100% on PS4. Awesome. Now here are points to put toward a new game on our platform.

How is that not better?
