This really would've been a good chance to get a Chinese director. They got a fairly unknown white woman to direct it instead so i'm not sure why they couldn't give asian directors more chances.

I don't see how taking out the songs would appeal to Chinese BO. China has a lot of singing competitions on TV and the Mulan song turns up every now and then, I think they quite like it.

I thought I had read that musicals weren't really popular in China (maybe on Era)? If that's not true, then I have no clue why Disney would consider it.

That they basically removed musical numbers, that the main villain is a witch and no longer Shan-Yu, and the fate of Mushu being in the movie is not even confirmed.

Also yea, heard she's not a great actress, but continues to land high profile roles =/
Mushu fucking better be in, dammit.

Also, why would they lose the musical numbers? They've proven to be huge hits in the live action films, and are incredibly iconic nostalgia grabs.

I mean that just sounds like any one of the 10 other recent Chinese movies I've seen. There's nothing particularly wrong with that, but it's not really mulan

I have absolutely no excitement for this after reading about all the changes they've made.

Yea li shang is out, but apparently her love interest will be a character played by Yoson An. Im ok with that, as they didnt make it Matt Damon

Yeah, but the love interest is some dick soldier who (according to the casting call) treats Mulan like shit because they're "rivals" but then falls in love when he realizes she's a woman :\

Mushu was like a poor man's Genie. Better off gone.

Seems they're trying to make some kind of pseudo-historical epic with this movie.

No musical numbers, no Shan-Yu and no Mushu.

I'm all for changes but those are some of my favorite parts about the animated movie...

I'm not interested in a 1:1 remake anyhow. If they did that I'd just watch the original film.

If they're gonna make it at all, I hope it's a reimagining that aims to be closer to the source material, sorta like The Jungle Book that came out recently.

The removal of the musical bits is because China hates Western style musicals. The removal of Shang, the three friends, and Mushu is evidently rumored to be because Disney wants to avoid paying royalties to Katzenberg and finally see a way to do away with those characters with this film.

Bring back bi icon Shang you cowards

Hmm...

I really like the western Mulan but I will give this a try. If it's heavily based on the OG Chinese Mulan I won't like it.
The weird thing is that it's based on neither, really. It removed basically all the OCs from Disney's movie but also is throwing in magic and a dickhole rival.

At this point, my interest in seeing this COMPLETELY hinges on the first trailer.

I'll know right away from tone and plot, where they're trying to take the movie, and if it's for me.

Never thought I would hesitate to see a Mulan movie

I don't know about the rest of China, but I remember Mulan being well liked in Hong Kong. I hope the musical stays in because martial art songs sung by Andy Lau or something during training are classic HK kung fu movies. I hope it retains being a war movie as opposed to going paranormal about defending nation against a witch and her minions.

There is no way Disney will remove all the classic songs from Mulan. I guess they will not be full musical numbers but more humping along like The Jungle Book.

It's a catch 22. More female directors! But not on an Asian film! She's not unknown, really. She did 'Whale Rider' in '02.
that's exactly what disney meant. it's unfortunate "more women" usually means women of color get left to the wayside but it's whatever.

There was an emphasis on getting a black director for Black Panther and Mulan deserved the same push.

You might want to give this a read:

This is not sounding like a remake. This is a whole new movie.

Yea, i was hoping this would be to Chinese/Asian-Americans what Black Panther was for African-Americans, but the more I hear about it, the more this seems to be a play to get at the Chinese BO, and any beneficial representation is just coincidental.

Oh... wow.

Are those changes confirmed?

Because they're terrible.

Just what I found so far:

Primary antagonist is now a witch played by Gong Li. This article also confirms Xana Tang will be playing Mulan's sister.
No songs. However, the director walked this comment back and claimed they haven't even discussed it so...
RIP Shang. New love interest is a soldier played by Yoson An who is "full of himself, with a mean, bullying stream to him" but falls in love with Mulan once he realizes she's a woman.
Jason Scott Lee plays a warrior leader who is intent on avenging his father's death and is working with the witch.

I don't think they've commented on Mushu, Yao, Ling and Chien Po yet but I doubt they'll be included at this point :(

That sounds terrible. If those elements are gone, I'm not seeing this. What's the point?

I'd rather have no songs at all. Ruined B&B live-action movie pretty hard.

Well yeah 'cause basically none of them could sing. Luke Evans and Ewan McGregor couldn't exactly carry the whole movie, especially when the latter had to put on a dumb French accent in a movie where everyone is meant to be French but have English accents.

The inclusion of an antagonist white guy makes this sound more like a gender swapped live action remake of Sword of the Stranger.

edit: mixed up the Aladdin rumors and Mulan rumors.

After hearing the controversy in this I decided to check on the Aladdin movie (these two and Lion King are really the only Disney remakes I give a shit about).

Apparently Disney had white actors and actresses put on "brown make up" so they could blend in the background in Aladdin lmao. Like they couldn't find any actual brown individuals for that? Yea right.
Apparently is due to some labour thing in regards to camel wranglers. Which to me is odd as fuck that there isn't a single brown or middle eastern person working in the industry in the U.K. to hire as background extras. Guy Ritchie being the director is also hilarious to me. First major Hollywood film where Middle Easterners are the main focus in characters and plot line, and they hand it off to fucking Guy Ritchie.

The Jurassic World hack drops a deuce with the Book of Henry, Lucas Films promptly dismiss him. The F4 gets the boot after that god awful film releases. But Disney still retains Ritchie even after King Arthur. I have zero hope for this film at all.
