I think everyone's guilty of it at some point, or making some other equally hyperbolic statement. Consistently doing it for the purpose of trolling is where the issue lies.

Because absolute statements such as "this is the worst I've ever seen" are incredibly detrimental to promoting critical thinking and serve no purpose in any conversation.

Is it not? We all have different values and perspectives--wait, are you fucking with me right now
No, it really isn't gatekeeping. What, exactly, are they gatekeeping when someone tells OP to stop being hyperbolic and is unwilling to express his thoughts? Yes, we all have different values and perspectives, so express those perspectives, saying something 'is the worst thing you've ever seen' is you just being overly dramatic and stirring the pot for no reason. Did you read the thread? It's very clear that the OP isn't willing to actually have a discussion and doesn't use forums for, well, discussion and just likes to be super hyperbolic and wants no one to reply to him.

And your example of someone being tired because they only slept for 4 hours, which is objectively not enough sleep, is not hyperbolic. That example is so completely off base comparison wise to what the OP was talking about that I honestly had no idea if it was supposed to be agreeing or disagreeing with the OP, I almost figured you might have posted in the wrong thread.

Gatekeeping would be saying he has no right to an opinion, shut up and go home, only real film discussion here, along with some thread bullying. Not saying it doesn't happen even on era but this isn't it.

This is saying if you come to a discussion forum to a thread where people are debating movies to the point I have seen people arguing the math of the landspeeders in TLJ you might want to have opinions to discuss. Hot take shit posts (which a post about Wonder Woman from OP shows this is repeated behaviour.) that get derision usually deserve it.

It then points out either it's hyperbole and if so drop it, or not a broad knowledge of film and if that watch movies. But if you are going to come and post on a discussion forum be ready to discuss.

Besides OP's thread has generated more discussion it seems than their movie opinions so I am going to say the hyperbole is intentional. Adds nothing to discussion. Discouraging drive bye posting is not gatekeeping.

Oh, he's basically upset with the tone people take when he says stuff like that. Okay, so the gatekeeping post was completely off base then, lol. My bad.

Yeah, I'm getting the fuller picture now.

No worry and I get it, gatekeeping does happen here at times it's not the weirdest conclusion you could have drawn.

What's so dramatic about it? What else should people use? "I found TLJ quite disagreeable. Subjectively, as determined by the breadth of my limited experience with the media, mind you, it ranks 100th out of 100 movies I've seen that year. (p.s the worst might mean 5/10 because I only watch really good movies, so it doesn't take much to become the worst" ?
Well yeah? If you didn't want people to make assumptions out of your posts, then don't make it too general and explain your reasoning. If you have a statement that you think warrants no discussion, then don't post it as a standalone in a discussion forum.

I'm my own movie critic. I know a good thing when I see it and I don't need no mug telling me otherwise.

Prime example of a good thing...

Still unreal to me people legitimately think this.

Let's be honest here, there aren't many actually good Star Wars movies. The only one that I feel is actually good is Empire Strikes Back. There's some really, really banal dialogue in both the original trilogy and prequels that really don't do it any favours if you weren't exposed to the series at an early age.

Yea took me a minute to catch on to that as well.

Yes, he's literally calling TLJ one of the worst movies he's ever seen.
It's a bad movie, by the standards of great movies, but it's hardly the worst movie of all time. I think that Science Mystery Theatre 2000 can attest to that.

"No it's not" probably means they think you lied/were being overly dramatic.

Is this the hot take thread?

Let me dump mine: Boring is not actual criticism. You saying a movie/game/book is boring without explaining why is as meaningless as saying something is good

Because 9/10 it's very clearly not the worst movie they've ever seen and they're using hyperbole to make their point seem weightier.

It's sort of like how people claim 'I fell asleep watching Movie X' did you? Did you really fall asleep watching a movie in a loud cinema?

My mum, an ex of mine, and another person I know regularly fall asleep at the cinema. Even if they're enjoying the film.

Something about the atmosphere has that effect on some people, regardless of sounds.

So while this is probably hyperbole a lot of the time, thisbdefinitely happens to some people.

Well if they know you, and they know you've said it a million times before, they stop believing you.

Mike from RLM will always say x or y movie is the worst movie he has seen when they are doing a Best of the Worst, and there is only one time everybody said "you know Mike for once we may agree, cause when you say it, it's meaningless but when we all say it you know it means something"

The worst movie I've ever seen is that movie about the kid who can make food appear from his hands. It's ridiculous.
