Holy shit. Is the Android one just unoptimized? Don't Galaxy phones have better specs than Switch?

Man, the Switch version looks so much better. I mean, of course it does, but still I'm impressed.

The Tegra X1 remains one of the most powerful GPU options in mobile. Its certainly helps as well that UE4 gets constant optimization for Switch.

Galaxy might have great specs along with the beastly iPhone X, however you have to remember they run bigger operating systems. They have heat restraints and also the more intensive a game is graphically the faster it runs down battery

Until we move on from lithium ion battery, cell phone gaming will continue to be throttled.

Couldn't watch the video but is the Galaxy version pushing 60fps? That would explain the difference since Switch is at 30.

Nope, no phone versions of Android support 60fps, not even the iPhone X version. It's most likely down to battery concerns than pure power as 60fps essentially means double the rendering load for the phone.

The Switch is a dedicated gaming system with active cooling, which illustrates the difference in thermal loads each class of device were designed to handle. Even if mobile has newer silicone and is pricier, Switch has that big edge which should last a little while.

Wow.

Impressed with the Android version.

For the Galaxy S9 plus which chip, Snapdragon or Exynos?

S9+ does surprisingly well. Doesnt look too bad either.

The switch is the better version here without a doubt.

How does the iPhone version compare?

Much better compared to this version on android. That res on the galaxy s9 looks sub hd, or the post process AA they are using is way way too aggressive. It's looks like a blur fest on my tv.

This video kinda puts into perspective the much larger overhead of android compared to the switch, and iPhone.

Very poor visuals from the s9+.

Definitely. That plus overhead.
I think the big thing is that this just continues to show the narrative from some that the Switch needs to be better in terms of specs isn't as valid as they believe. What we've got is crazy enough as is and of course the next iteration will definitely be more powerful but it's a beast right now alongside other portable options.

I can't believe that phones are even doing this. Well, ok yeah I can since I've followed video games and tech for 30 years but still what a time to be alive!

Damn, even the lower end iOS models were on par with this - however I blame this mostly on the graphics hardware being super close to all the devices Fortnite ran on iOS that trying to unify a codebase like Fortnite for such a wide set of (albeit trivial) technology will have it's problems.

Newer smartphones may have an edge in raw specs. But the Switch doesn't have to worry about thermal issues or a large OS. A lot of people underestimate how much CPU power and RAM a Phone or PC's Operating system actually eats up. Switch doesn't have that issue, thus developers have access to more power than they do on smartphones because of the lack of overhead and it having an active cooling system.

A Unity iOS build gets capped at 30fps by default. You can set it to 60 if you want, but the phone will get uncomfortably hot and the battery will drain fast. I assume Unreal does the same.

Fortnite could probably run at 60 on good phones, but Epic won't allow that

The Galaxy S9+ is a beast, idk why this port seems so unoptimized tbh. And Epic brought it out to ONLY GALAXY phones as well, so you would think they would bother to test it out a bit.

Phones aren't dedicated gaming devices, is that so hard to undertsand after all these years.

Fortnite Android looks more like Fortnite Vita

It's still cool they can have a game like that on phones and I expect Fortnite to explode in China now

Wow what a difference. O ly thing I didn't like about that Switch version was that grass at the end. What's even the point in having grass appear with such a short draw distance like that. I'd rather just have it look more barren but be consistent. That's so glaringly annoying, lol.

But yeah expected more from a brand new modern day phone. Switch is doing pretty great.

Go look at any thread back when the Switch was being broken down and we were learning its specs. People get really mad that their 300$ portable system didnt have 500GB of storage and a retina screen because "their phone does" as if those phones didn't cost $1000

Switch vs iPhone version? Is there a video for that?

Switch is clearly the superior version here.
