So i was listening pop radio dure 30min in my car.
5-6 songs. And i was thinking "omg i have the feeling that i listened the SAME BEAT or Song since 30 minutes".

Beside that Ariana Grande song (which isn t awesome) i can t say a single good pop song that don t use vocoder or electronic beeps in 2018 that i can remember.
If i want good electropop sound i listen Parov Stellar or Synapson.

At beginning of the 2000's we had this:
.

And i don t even talk about the 90's pop rock.

I think since David Guetta collaboration with Black Eyed Peas everybody did the same. Coldplay or Maroon5 have been Guettafied, and many others too.

So am i right or am i just... Too old ?

Well there's an aspect of fashion. Certain styles get popular at the same time and hit the pop radio.

That has always happened. You just remember the best of years past.

Plus people don't really listen to the radio. They listen to streaming services like Spotify. Curated playlists etc.

This has literally been said about pop music in every single moment in time. If you want quality, stick to a well-curated list of Max Martin productions. Ezpz.

So if you d rather like, the music industry is doing the same meat since 10 years for me.

No. This is a question people ask every single year as they move past the era of music that they personally grew up in.

There has and always will be good pop music and bad pop music. And given that music is one of the most subjective pieces of entertainment, it all comes down to personal opinion.

I like how people always complain like "it's so shitty" but then never follow up with an explanation why it's so shitty... And the few times they do it's superficial and subjective arguments... Don't like it, don't listen.

If the internet existed in the 70's, we would be saying the same thing about ABBA.

And ABBA fucking kicks.

Now ?

Nah. Pop music as always been about 20% good, 80% shit. Always.

We believe past decades were better because we only remember the good songs and forget the bad ones existed. But no, pop music was always filled with crap, you just need to focus on the good ones.

early 2000's and 90s pop is definetly the worst era.

like i don't get how someone can possibly shit on something like Lady Gaga and proceed to link that madonna song, or something by like backstreet boys or something.

Mainstream pop is in no way indicative of the current overall quality of pop.

As for every genre, you just have to look for the good stuff.

Pop music has always been about homogenization of the things people like to hear, and further breaking it down simpler and simpler
This is what you get

there's definitely no shortage of cheesy EDM anthems on the radio.

But then I think about nu-metal and post-grunge

And I think about late hair metal

Plenty of bad eras of popular music. Also the radio is barely even youth culture anymore, the kids are on youtube and soundcloud and streaming services.

I feel that many pop songs super blatantly use the same mold, yeah. Same beats, same dudes with soft voices singing the same stuff. The lyrics are mostly uninteresting, too.

Are you talking about Pop music the genre, or Popular music?

Popular music right now is kind of awful. Streaming has made popular music a place where quality has gone down the drain. The evidence is in Drake's success this year.

Actual pop music hasn't had the best influences this year, mainly Ariana Grande & Meghan Trainor flopping (compared to pop girls like Katy Perry & Lady Gaga at the same time in their career).

I think 2019 will be a much better experince, but as of right now, I have had to try and actively search for different artists because this year so many people are not putting in the time & effort.

You have to look outside of the American top charts if you want a variety of beats and sounds.

Yes, pop music of today is really bad. That Ariana Grande song you mentioned, no one will remember it a year from now.

Pop music in general has always been about the trend. Pop artist took their stab at Disco, Funk, New Swing, R&B, Trip-Hop and now 808 trap beats. Look at K-POP. It thrives on Trap beats the majority of the time. POP will always be pop.

I love Pop music, especially the local Pop station, outside of the Christmas season and christmas music., the Pop music genre is pretty much all I listen to.

Yeah popular music today is very formulaic for sure. It's very EDM-centric. Sure, every music generation has "trends" but Top 40 used to have way more genre variety in the past. In the 80s for example, switch on Top 40 radio any week and you'll get Rock, Reggae, Dance, Movie Soundtrack, Instrumentals, Duets, New Wave, Hair Metal, Rap, Soul, Country, Adult Contemporary, etc. It may have been trashy pop, sure, but at least it had variety. Today it's been pretty much narrowed down to "club" music.

These are my ETERNAL JAMS why are blackpink and red velvet so freaking good

I loop this song so much

Also, OP: No, pop music is not uniquely bad or anything right now. As in every previous time there are bad things and good things but you would be absolutely wrong to claim that this is not the best time to be listening to music

IIRC it was scientifically proven that Western pop music sounds way more similar compared to any other decade.

Hell, listen to the top 40 and you immediately recognize it. That's not to say that there aren't good songs out there. But the sameness should be recognized by everyone.

I mean K-pop has been heavily influenced by American styles (like pop, hip-hop, r&b) and European dance music for the last few years. So it's not like you can't find American artists that don't do this if you're willing to listen to hip-hop or r&b or find some electric tracks on sound cloud or the top charts in Europe. :p

Despacito was the last pop song I heard (last year). It's alright, so popmusic is probably alright now as well.

In the context of the OP, it kinda makes it sound like that Madonna song is supposed to be good but it's, uh, pretty bad.

[edit]

Or 90s pop rock.

Is it supposed to be bad or good, per the OP's argument? 'Cus then the 'now' is not really 'now' but but the past 20 odd years.

I mean Sophie, pc music and Charli xcx exist so I don't agree. It also might be the country you live in as well. I listened to let's eat grandma's latest album and whilst it's not completely my cup of tea it's certainly ambitious. Then you have Rina sawayama who is a London based artist with her latest episode which Grew to become something I really really liked.
