Recently, while playing through Deus Ex MD and indulging in my one exceedingly time consuming proclivity of capturing screenshots, I have been pondering about places I have spent inordinate amount of time just moving around, doing nothing save for taking in the overall scenery, its details, its music (if any) or dietetic audio and atmosphere.

The following are the places which I was completely enamoured with:

07qidu8kwytz.jpg
Taris from KoTOR I

Megaton from Fallout 3

Rivet City from Fallout 3

And finally, the one that sparked my imagination and consumed so much of my time:

Citadel from Mass Effect (specifically from ME1)

Would love to know which are your most cherished areas where you have spent hours solely because you loved being there?

The Kingdom of Zeal in Chrono Trigger. It's all ancient technology and lost magic, all sorts of magical denizens living together. Music dominated by the twang of a sitar. Waterfalls and suspended islands.

Gaur Plain in Xenoblade Chronicles

I remember that I spent hours just exploring (running into that giant spider jump scare) and leveling up before I finally moved forward with the story. The world design in the original Xenoblade is probably my favorite from any RPG. And the music in that particular part is just perfect

Oh dear, where do I start?

The Forbidden Lands in Shadow of the Colossus definitely takes the cake for me.
Forests, ruins, lakes... that whole world just takes my thoughts away.

COD4 so much so that people who played the likes of popular maps such as Crossfire and Ambush have glitched out of them to explore or as OP says "wondered"

Every major city or settlement in Final Fantasy XII. Rabanastre, Nalbina, Bhujerba, Archades, Balfonehim, even the small villages in the Estersand. FFXII has such a loving, spirited, and believable sense of world.

This. I'm playing it right now on PC and the cities, even the zones between, are simply captivating to me. Yes, I'm one of those people who adore FFXII :)

Even though I hate the combat, Skyrim has some very beautiful areas in the game. The middle of the map can be super breathtaking at times and the underground city with glowing mushrooms is a site to see. I still remember back when the game released and I had just stumbled into that area by accident.

Also, I'm super disappointed that Final Fantasy XV didn't let me see more of the world. When you first go into the Venice like city on the railway I was in awe.

Yamatai (Tomb Raider)

It's such an engrossing environment with a unique blend of ancient Japanese culture, WW2 era Japan, and modern day shanty towns. The mood also changes completely once you beat the game and can freely explore the island with very little hostile opposition in the way, and just take in the wildlife and natural landmarks.

Another world that also does for me, Half-Life²

The abandoned houses in Highway 17, the whole coastal area with partially drained oceans, the oppressive and depressing atmosphere on the cities, it brings that harrowing Eastern European atmosphere that I just love.

I guess the same could be applied to both S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro series.

That whole sensation of "there was life here" and now all that remains is struggle and long, forgotten stories and memories.

ugh, it is depressingly perfect.

Edit: Oh, and although I've only played the demo, Dying Light also give me the same vibes.

I recently got back into Breath of the Wild, and I never get tired on wandering around the random back mountains of Hyrule. Forget the Shrines and Koroks, sometimes the real fun lies in just finding cool little locations and breathtaking sights. I was wandering around Mount Taran and the environment aligned to create this gorgeous shot of the moon shining down through the rain over a wooded swamp. The game never stops surprising me.

Agree. I'm still discovering new locations, shrines, korok seeds, and everything else, despite playing since launch. I think I don't want this game to end!

The Nexus from Demon's Souls.

The only place that seemed 'safe' in the game, great music and atmosphere too. I spent a lot of time just wandering there.

When True Crime: Streets of LA released, I was so satisfied with the width of the freeways and speed of the vehicles that I would drive those roads a lot.

A bunch of levels in Halo, after clearing out the enemies.

In Halo: CE I've spent so much time running around mission 2 (AKA Halo) and The Silent Cartographer.

Yharnam, hands down out of every single game i've ever played my brain compares to the opening area of the game - which only gets sweeter later as you realise there is an
entire second area you can discover that you didn't even know about!

Actually...loads up Bloodborne for the nth time...

Just one more (I could go on all night otherwise :p), although, it is a bit of cheat answer:

The Universe/Space.

Gimme No Man's Sky, Noctis or Rodina and I turn myself off from real life.

I still really like flying around casually in Gravity Rush series. Getting the little gems can be fun too but the NPCs and reactions in GR2 is also really charming. Photo mode was nice too.

Omega in Mass Effect 2 is probably my favourite location in any game ever. I was blown away when I discovered it and knew this game was more than I'd ever hoped.

Unlike most people, I look back on AC3 with a lot of fondness, almost entirely because of the world-building.

I spent so much time in the Frontier, which I still consider to be my favourite open world environment. Especially in the winter.

I love walking around Kamurocho and Sotenbori in Yakuza 0. I've always wanted to travel and/or live abroad, but I haven't been able to yet, so taking in the cities have been pleasant. I haven't really played any other open-world/open-worldish games that take place in cities, so I don't know if anyone else has done it better though.

Definitely The Forbidden Land in Shadow of the Colossus. Hours spent searching for little secrets, riding around and breathing in the beautiful atmosphere for years before the remake.

Well it's not a specific area as such but I found the whole of horizon Zd was just an incredible experience to be able to explore. Some of the jungle and waterfall scenes are incredible and you don't need a mission or purpose to enjoy them

I love to running arround in glass:

featuredImage.img.jpg
Same. While it wasn't as good as first game, it being open world meant that I really enjoyed running around it.
As for my answer, the levels of The Talos Principle. I even used a noclip cheat to check out the structures at the edge of the map.

Man, all three of the locations are extremely dreamy.

I spent a lot of time in The Witcher 3 just walking around at a glacial pace, taking in all that was around me, especially if the area was new. It's why my playtime is 300+ hours for the first run alone.

The edges of the maps had a particular appeal to me, Velen's southern parts especially.

Los Santos and it's surrounding area.

Whether it's walking down the boardwalk & ridingbtye roller coaster, biking through the centre of the map, flying or just sitting on top of the hills watching sunset or sunrise, it's the game I've spent most time in not doing game stof from, just enjoying the world around me.

Black Flag is the same - I love dropping anchor at night near a small spot & waiting for sunrise or watching a storm approaching in the distance.

As a kid, Hyrule Castletown was amazing. I spent so much time and money doing the minigames and browsing the shops and failing and Bombchu Bowling. Blew my mind. And the music was so fun and energetic.

Came here to do the honorable thing and post Xenoblade X. Mira is the most breathtaking world I've ever seen in a game by a wide margin. The locational variety and secrets on display is nothing short of breathtaking, whether you're walking and marvelling at the high structures or flying to them and perching with a skell. Majestic.

There are just too many to name. Ard Skellige and Toussaint, both from The Witcher 3. Loads of areas in BioShock were beautiful as well. The open world in Shadow of the Colossus and Yarnham in Bloodborne are amazing too.

FUEL was perhaps a mediocre racing game, but it had an enormous open world that was just amazing to explore and mess around in. A lot of structures were copy pasted across the landscape, but it was still really ambitious considering it was a 360/PS3 generation title.

Also with the Refuelled mod on PC, you can create your own custom races, which was really fun to play around with on a lazy afternoon with some ambient music playing in the background.

A shame it's not available digitally any more.

The dlc area in Witcher 3 (well, the whole game tbh. But the dlc area especially the colour pallet was beautiful)

Any rockstar game. I can spend hours upon hours just wandering around any rockstar open world and not get bored.

Majora's mask. But given the game kinda forces you to wander about with all the different things going on at different times not sure this really counts.
