Anybody else experiencing this? It's starting to get annoying. Now even Reddit won't serve up content, I get a splash screen that tells me to disable my adblocker. I'm using UBlock Origin. Is there some newer adblocker that gets pass these websites' checks?

It's unfortunate but well within their right. What can you say, really? I'd implore more websites to display reasonable ads but if they want to deny you service that's their prerogative.

Ublock Origin is very aggressive at blocking not just ads, but other third-party trackers and even first-party libraries it thinks could be tracking you in some way.

Turn on advanced user mode in the settings and you can whitelist trackers on a per-site or per-page basis. For reddit, whitelist reddit.com, redditmedia.com, and redditstatic.com, and you can keep everything else blocked and you still won't see ads.

Here is a good guide to the dynamic filtering system that can help you troubleshoot problems when Ublock Origin breaks things on sites: https://github.com/gorhill/uBlock/wiki/Dynamic-filtering:-quick-guide

If it's a site I frequent regularly, I whitelist them or disable for the site.

Website hosting isn't free people.

I always find this strange. If websites can tell I'm using it, why don't all sites just stop me? Even YT doesn't do anything about it. I have like five sites white-listed, and they're just forums and WebUrbanist.

I just experienced that on reddit with regular uBlock. I uninstalled it and installed uBlock Origin and it works fine now.

Websites need to make money somehow.

Because they make money on you regardless of if ads are shown. Think tracking networks, e-commerce, or sponsored content.

Is it worth the security/privacy risks?
Something I've done in the past is that the few websites I trust, I whitelist them not for ads, but for cookies. Most sites I block all cookies, first and third party, so if I get an add, it's a generic one and I'm not being followed as well between sites and pages; I never get any targeted ads this way.

Use NoScript instead of an adblocker. The current trend of sites increasingly becoming heavier and heavier is the worst and needs to stop.

If you want less aggressive ads, don't use adblocker.

Where's the evidence that this would happen? The evolution from no blockers of any kind, to pop-up blockers, to comprehensive ad and script blockers, came about because advertisers pushed their luck at every turn. First we went from unobtrusive banner ads to a pop-up nightmare, then when they were blocked we got increasingly obnoxious flash ads, then videos, fullscreen ads, etc. That's not to mention trackers, unethical or illegal behaviour, bandwidth use, performance issues, etc.

Advertisers have earned zero trust that they're capable of self control and self policing if everyone stopped ad-blocking.

Just turn off your adblock for sites that you visit often and know the ads are safe. That's what I do. Reddit is pretty good about it.

Bullshit. Ads were agressive as fuck way before ad blocking went mainstream. It's why adblockers became a thing in the first place...

Injecting malware
Full screen takeover ads often a minute after the content on the page has loaded and the user has read some content and began to scroll down
Redirect ads to shady/malicious websites
Auto-playing ads w/ obnoxious audio
Eating up bandwidth when users often have datacaps

I'm all for ads but I'll always use a blocker and whitelist credible sites until ads get regulated somehow. It's fucking obscene the shit they have pulled. Even reputable sites can end up serving malware due to these ad networks.

I have no sympathy for their bottom line when they refuse to clean up the bullshit.

thats one way to do it. fyi nano is a fork of ubo, and both rely on the same lists. mostly. i doubt nano had a specific filter built in that solved the issue.

did you update the filter lists in ubo? have you checked which lists are enabled in nano and ubo?

I've never had any issues with Reddit using uBlock Origin and Chrome. They recently switched over to giving everyone the redesign by default in the past few days, other than finally having a glorious native night mode on every sub I haven't noticed anything different. Your ad blocker settings are probably FUBAR.

that's horrible advice.
the only reason adblockers exist is because advertisers weren't responsible.

AREN'T responsible.

I don't log in (Era Gold) to Era on my toilet tablet and last time I used it, I got that scam amazon giveaway thing that took over the browser. So even sites that claim to have responsible ads are lying or ignorant about the truth. Ads are always going to be a vector for malicious actors to use. The safest thing to do to a computer these days is not let those ads run.

You could have kept Ublock installed. Just read my post above about manual whitelisting. I had the exact same problem with reddit as you did and that fixed it.

So what's the best combination for blocking ads/scripts these days?

I'm still rocking Ad Block Plus like an old man.

Use Privacy Badger instead, it blocks trackers and it isn't an ad blocker per se.

Pay for subscriptions on sites you like (Giant Bomb for example).
Turn off ad blocker on sites you want to support (Era).
Everything else can be addressed by adding a pihole to your network.

I don't even bother with ad blockers, better to get a script blocker. More effective at protecting your system as well. Then it's also possible to enable ads on sites while also preventing take over and tracking ads so you can continue to support a website if you want.

This what pisses me off most. They want me to turn off adblocker but then they slam me with huge obnoxious ads. TVtropes used to have a pop up that would show up at the bottom of the page to remind to you to disable it but if I do it still showed up, just with an ad. Motherfucker, why do you I think I use ad blocker in the first place?

haven't had any big issues lately... occasionally a site will get uppity and try to block content but the list maintainers work around it eventually. I use reddit and everything loads great on Firefox 62 Beta / uBlock Origin / latest built-in filters... key is to keep everything updated. I just keep the lists at default and make sure they are set to auto-update, nothing too fancy.

whitelist the sites you want to support through ads. That's about it.
