I can't possibly keep up with their content output like I used to, but GB has consistently been my favorite place for games coverage since the big migration after Gamespot fired Jeff and 1UP died.

First subscription I ever took out - on anything - was Giant Bomb Premium. It's the only place on the Internet that really feels like home to me.

Love the site/podcasts, and the only thing that comes close for me was peak era 1UP. One of the more surprising things about getting into the industry, though, was realizing how niche Giant Bomb was relatively speaking, at least 8 years ago. Most devs will know about Gamespot, IGN, or Kotaku; Giant Bomb, not so much.

Jeff/Dan was underrated. They worked extremely well off each other.

Also,

The Killzone 2 QL is a goddamn masterpiece.I believe there are 3 parts.

The Jeff/Dan dynamic when Dan first started at Giant Bomb is what made me a regular listener. They were like oil and water in an incredibly funny way with Jeff's cynicism and Dan's naïveté and enthusiasm. It was great stuff.

Yet they would mix perfectly on the best things. I remember the Forza Horizon 3 Quick Look where they pretty much chatted about Kid Rock the entire time.

Thanks for the link.

I've only been a Premium Subscriber for two years, but I'm definitely a fan. And Jeff's story of being fired to being the face of editorial integrity is pretty great. You can tell he has enormous credibility in the industry by how many people do interviews with him at each E3.

I liked it more maybe 3-4 years ago but it hasn't done much for me lately. They have failed to evolve and the newer staff members dont do anything for me. Their goty stuff was some of the worst received stuff the site has done in awhile

Love GB...both East and West. At first I was meh on the Beastcast but I think now I look forward to that one more, Jeff Bakalar and Abby being the highlight, Alex's negativity kinda gets tiresome but I thinks its also a staple of that group. The West Coast Bomb cast sometimes wastes a lot of time on obscure gaming stuff that I dont care about, also Ben and Jeff are the highlights...their aftershow can be pretty entertaining. But really all of that crew, east and west, are fun to listen to. They make my commutes a bit easier.

I'd take Alex's realistic approach any day over Dan's loud stupidity.

I had almost forgot about this. That was a good laugh.

Marketing for PC games at the time (and partially still) was aimed at PC gamers. You saw ads everywhere, as long as "everywhere" only encompasses PC games magazines and dedicated websites, after those became a thing.

TV ads, broadly aimed magazine ads, merchandise and blowouts for media were almost all exclusively for console games.

C&C was a B-Game, even if within the PC community it clearly was on a A level.

I'll follow Alex to wherever he goes, he has an amazing moral compass paired with a third sense for reading people and situations (that's probably also why he is not only the one who knows the most about movies - maybe together with Rorie -, but also has the best taste in movies, despite not having a film major).

Now about the rest of the Beast crew...

When Dan was new, I liked him and then quickly found him aggressively annoying and ...3 months later, I just accepted him as "part of the family now". Sometimes you're family with people you wouldn't become friends with under normal circumstances, but when you're family, you can push through that more easily and stick together.

Now, Abby. I liked her at first. During game of the year I wrote a comment like "yea, she was annoying, but this could happen to ANYONE, she'll listen to herself in the GOTY podcasts and see that as well, then learn from it. It's no big deal at all and I'm sure next GOTY with her will be great again". Now, 4 months after that... If I ever hear a "Hell yea!" with that Abby-Intonation again, I'll suffer a nervous breakdown (that's just one example, another would be her tricolon "I think that it's x, I think it's y and I think it's z"). All staff members have their weird "catch-phrases" like Brad's downer "yea. yea. ...yeaa" or Jeff's "Huh [that's interesting/who would have thought]", but for whatever reason, I can't stand Abby's anymore. I turn off everything she is featured in.
This is not misogyny, I mean, weirdly enough I don't like Marie Kish either, but on the other hand I love Danielle Riendeau or Danika Harrod. I also don't want Abby gone, because this is saying more about me than her, but yea... can't listen anymore.

Oh, and Vinny... without someone like Jeff, Brad, Ryan, Drew, Alex, Patrick or Austin to ground him... he's just sooo infantile, too infantile in his humour for me. He was my favorite Duder at some point, but that Vinny is gone now.

*taking a deep breath* phew, I feel better now. Sorry, if now I annoyed someone.

Dan and Abby are very much the two cornerstones that have kept GB ticking over the years.

Dan was that vital spark after Ryan passed that seemed to rejuvinate everyone, and Abby has definitely pushed the range of video stuff they've done in the last year or so, particularly with Thirteen Deadly Sims. She's also great at just doing 'bits' which I've always loved about the site. This was great from last year:

I really should get back into the podcasts, it's been awhile. But then again, there's been a lot of changes and losses and It's just... not the same, to say the least.

Naturally, a GB thread devolving into people airing out their dirty feelings for somebody existing on the internet. Just... Why? They're doing their thing, aren't you just doing yours?

Yup, every single thread. People will come in here and then defend their whinnying too. When I don't like something in entertainment I just turn it off and move on.

They really need Austin on the East, Waypoint is too serious and Giantbomb isn't serious enough. When Vice inevitably shuts the operation down, I hope Austin gets picked up by giantbomb

I was driving in the rain when I heard this and almost died because I was laughing so hard. Legit should have pulled over but I couldn't.

This is why they deserved an article on Variety.
