We've wished other characters into existence before but Goku will not ever be one of them.

Clearly instead of Goku we're getting a Jojo character

All the taunts will be poses and Cheap Trick will be an Assist Trophy

Well no shit. I mean I love Goku but do people honestly believe he has any chance of getting in? Smash was a celebration of Nintendo games that evolved to be more of a celebration of video games but it needs to stop there. You add Goku you're opening up the flood gates for Mickey Mouse, Batman, Homer Simpson, Hello Kitty, etc.

Do people hate Goku's Japanese voice? So much they would not play him? Lol.

I think it is better, also all the other adaptations I have seen emulated the Japanese voice which is more childlike.

People are dumb for thinking a VA would just tell them something as significant as that, as if NDAs don't exist.

People are dumb for wanting Goku in the game at all.

Depends on the contract. They may own the samples perpetually. They may have to give him money to reuse his lines (and if they do, they may not have to pay him till after the game is released). I don't know his contract or even the standard agreement for minor voice over lines in video games.

Depends on how his contract was structured. Likely Nintendo has full ownership over the assets so in such a case they would not need to ask for permission to reuse them.
Fair enough

Bullshit, last time the subject came up people compared her to "dying cats". People are so set that Goku's voice has to be manly or whatever to the point where they cant accept that people might prefer the original.

Alright, since you seem so intent on using the word that I described her as let me clear up my perspective.

Her voice, by itself, is fine. As a voice actress I'm sure she's very good, delivers her lines well and is believably emotive. I respect her talent and passion to her craft as a person doing the job they are paid to do and doing that job well, as in using their voice to believably express emotions and bring characters to life.

All of that being said, my first exposure to Goku was through the english dub and I only listened to the JP voices much later. As a kid, I'm sure her voice fits the character very well. As an adult it was and continues to be an awful fit. He sounds like he's still 12 years old and the argument that his voice somehow preserves his innocence and childlike-ness is garbage. They could have easily made him "childlike" without having the voice a prepubescent kid through other traits and more importantly; behavior or personality. If you like it for adult Goku that's fine, but I think for an adult man that voice is godawful.

Finally, look at your last sentence very carefully, because you were the one to first accuse somebody of not being a fan if they didn't like the original JP voice. Something which, I don't think I've seen anybody else in the thread do.

For fuck's sake.

Let's say Goku is a thing for Smash. Do you honestly believe Sakurai would use adult Goku and not kid Goku? He has been sticking with the classic version of all of these characters(Like NES Cover Simon Belmont) that I could see him sticking with the classic kid Goku that was beloved back in the 80s.

Bullshit, last time the subject came up people compared her to "dying cats". People are so set that Goku's voice has to be manly or whatever to the point where they cant accept that people might prefer the original.

I think this is a deeper issue with Japanese voice acting and them keeping someone because they were there from the start. At least, I'd like to believe that this is why Goku still sounds like a kid and Naruto still sounds like a teenager when they are both pushing or above the age of 30.

"BUT SAKURAI CHANGES MIND ALL DA TIME!"
Seriously, these people don't seem to realize how ignorant they sound.

I think it depends on the context? One thing I've noticed from following Smash -- or hell just any fighting game pre-release conversation in general -- is that you get some of the more passionate fans trying to turn offhand remarks from days past into some sort of "(Insert Director's Name Here)'s Bible" of axioms that cannot ever be questioned. And that's not to say that you can't use that information to try and ascribe likelihood to something happening. After all, we are fans. That's what we do. How are we going to spend the next 4 months in Smash threads if not arguing over what content we think should and shouldn't be in the game? But I also just think people become too rigid in their thinking.

Honestly, I don't think Goku is going to be in the game. He didn't originate in a video game and he doesn't have a particularly strong connection to Nintendo specifically in the games that do release which have generally either been multi-platform or exclusive to the most dominant system. Smart money to me is that Goku doesn't meet the criteria that I've synthesized in my head for what makes a good Smash candidate. But I'm also acknowledging that this is really just my own head canon and that I'm not in charge of this stuff.

What I think drives people to say things like "Sakurai changes his mind!!!!" probably has less to do with Sakurai actually throwing out his "rules" and more to do with how fans have presented Sakurai's thought process. What people are angling at is that we can go back to the vaults and dig up conversations where people will absolutely assure you that characters like Ryu, Cloud, and Bayonetta have absolutely no shot of getting in this franchise. "He said no fighting game characters." "No Nintendo connection at all, if anything we'd get a FFIV-FFVI rep." "Sakurai has commented in the past about not liking realistic looking guns." These were all things I'd read over the years. Maybe he actually said them. Maybe they were mistranslations. Or maybe they were never meant to be hard and fast rules in the Sakurai Bible of Smash Design but were instead just explanations of his thought process at the time that is always open to discussion among his colleagues.

Do people actually think shonen jump will find its way into smash?
I mean, there have been surprises but they're all gaming related. Goku is just anime

If people didnt act immature with "nails on a chalkboard" "cats being strangled" "godawful" etc every time the original cast is brought up there would be no problem.
Going out of your way to try and berate something you know is loved by a lot of people as the voice of the character does make me feel like you're just too focused on whats "manly" rather than caring much about the history of the animation.

If cloud is in why not goku
Cloud is videogame character from the video game series final fantasy. While he himself was not, his series was historically on the Nintendo family of video game systems including the Nintendo entertainment system and the super Nintendo entertainment system. Goku is a manga who already stars the cross over anime fighting games

Calling people not fans for saying those things is equally as immature. Surprise surprise, people care about the anime and character for different reasons, it doesn't make them less of a fan of it. Get off your high horse dude. The way they choose to express it might be overly harsh at times, but it doesn't mean they don't care for it.

To be Frank Spongebob gets the most commentary on how impossible it is due to his status. Goku only gets two lines and then they moved on
You're reaching. He put them in the same breath, that says it all.

"I get requests like 'please put Goku in.'

'please put Spongebob in'.

That says it all lol.

Also, the voting ballot they did a while back specifically stated that it had to be a "video game character".

Loool. Can't believe people are seriously expecting Goku. Yeah it would be great to have the greatest Anime protagonist ever but not going to happen in ultimate.

We may get a. dragon quest rep though.

Popeye is not going to appear either and thats a million times more important for nintendo as a cartoon character than goku.

In fact i would prefer popeye in the game by a large margin. And he is more powerful than goku anyways.

Cloud is a video game character from one of the most storied franchises in Japan's history. A franchise that was born on Nintendo's Famicom.

Goku is a manga character.

It doesn't change the fact that cloud being in over someone like Cecil broke all "rules" I would hear from the fanbase in the past. Not to mention goku is pretty relevant in the fighting game genre atm.

I mean I never thought so many characters would be in that are in right now for a variety of reasons. What's one more shocker to make for arguebly the craziest fighting game roster ever.

I'm for it personally. The roster as is is good enough tbh.
