I agree. It was very hard to decipher at times what the dialogue was.
Same, it was hard to catch character names at first because of that hurried style of speaking coupled with the accent.

The scene where
Lady Silence discovers Goodsir's partially eaten body
was so bleak and powerful and amazing.

I don't think it was even the dialects. The sound mix was easily the low point of the series, haha. I'm about to show the series to a friend and am curious what I'll pick up in the first few episodes now. I was stubborn when I began it.

Primarily it's the master rather than the mix when it comes to not hearing the voices. You can fix it yourself if you have an equalizer (even built in option in the tv might work). Some of the lower voices are a bit drowned by the bass and that is indeed due to bad mixing. The sound design is a little bit weird as well, the echo when they walk on the rocks is not what walking on rocks in a desolate landscape sounds like, maybe they went for larger than life and failed? It sound like rocks grinded together with a tape delay and chorus.

I haven't heard it in 5.1 or 7.1 - it could work better depending on placement of voices snd other sounds. There's pretty much an everlasting bass sound when they are on the boat.

Started watching the series after I watched a video about Franklin's lost expedition on YouTube (Zepherus' channel, which is awesome btw) and I'm loving it. I usually tend to pass on many exploration themed books/series/movies mainly due to the 'bro glorification' that usually the old books have (The Sea-Wolf by Jack London is a great exception though, and I like it a lot) but this is indeed something else. The visuals are awesome, the cast is perfect and the addition of mythological elements makes it even better. I'm a fan of this Lovecraftian/ruthless nature vibe this show has.

I didn't read the book yet but also liked the addition of Lady Silence too. It's less an inclusion of a love interest (in that fanfic way that often female characters are included on stereotypically male genres like medieval/exploration/old sci-fi stories tend to be) and more an input on the Inuit role on the story.

A curious thing I found out researching the archeological evidence on the expedition is that some of the bodies found (at least 4) were identified as female after DNA analysis, and they have two possible explanations: a) The DNA could be damaged due to time or b) Maybe some of the crew were women passing as men to serve on the Navy, something that is reported to happen at the time. Since the book/series made a lot of changes concerning the real history I was wondering it would be nice to see this exploited as a sub-plot, a female character disguised as a man (but maybe this would diminish the shock that is the confrontation of the presence of Lady Silence and the all-male crew).

Absolutely unreal this show didn't get any Emmy nominations. The writing and acting was phenomenal, and the directing and cinematography were right up there too. This show has stuck with me more than anything else of 2018.

Was it an eligibility thing? Because that makes no sense. The VFX alone were groundbreaking.

incredible show that should have won all the awards. the performances were top-shelf. so so many dialogue exchanges and minor moments that are worthy of attention.

Derek Mio has been cast as the lead in season 2 of The Terror:

Derek Mio has been cast as the lead in Season 2 of AMC's anthology series The Terror.

The next iteration will be set during World War II and center on an uncanny specter that menaces a Japanese-American community from its home in Southern California to the internment camps to the war in the Pacific. The 10-episode Season 2 is expected to air on AMC in 2019.

Josef Kubota Wladyka (Narcos) will direct the first episode.

I'd watch it! I thought the acting in the firs season was great. "Creature" design left something to be desired though.

It's still pretty shocking to me how little attention this series got. None of the film/TV podcasts I listen to even mentioned it. It's a damned shame.

But this doesn't need a second season...
It's an anthology, not a direct sequel. It doesn't seem like the same team unfortunately, so I'm keeping expectations in check.

Where can I watch this? I have netflix, hulu, amazon subs in addition to cable with AMC but I can't find it on demand and it doesn't show up when I search the guide on cable, which seems weird. I'm not freaking paying per episode when I have all these streaming subs plus cable. Like wtf why is this so hard to find?

Where can I watch S1?

Hm, I thought it would be on Hulu. Maybe in a few weeks?

Were the ratings even good?

They were pretty solid.

Yeah this show was criminally under watched. One of my favorite shows of the last couple of years. I love period media when done right and this was exceptionally well done. Although it's a different show running group I'm still very excited particularly with them with exploring the Japanese internment camps and following the leads back over to Japan

I loved it. It's the only media I've known of to make the stark light of day more bleak than the black of night.

Damn season two has a really great premise and a setting Americans are pathetically lacking in knowledge of. Really great to hear Takei is involved.

I wonder if this will be the first major American drama series to have a majority Asian cast. I mean outside Fresh Off the Boat I can't think of any other show regardless of genre.

Selfie isn't an all asian-cast but it's the first time i saw an asian man as the leading man in a two-person show. (John Cho)

The premise for season 2 sounds interesting, though what I really loved about season 1 was the total isolation and the fight against nature.

Season two has been titled - The Terror: Infamy.

The 10-episode second season began production on Jan. 14 in Vancouver, and is expected to premiere on AMC later this year.

In addition to George Takei, new Season 2 cast members include Kiki Sukezane ("Lost in Space") as Yuko, a mysterious woman from Chester's past; Miki Ishikawa ("9-1-1") as Amy, a Nakayama family friend; Shingo Usami ("Unbroken") as Henry Nakayama, Chester's father; and Naoko Mori ("Everest") as Asako Nakayama, Chester's mother.

Season 2 is co-created and executive produced by Alexander Woo ("True Blood") and Max Borenstein ("Kong: Skull Island," "Godzilla"). Woo also serves as showrunner while Josef Kubota Wladyka ("Narcos") will direct the first two episodes.
