Fantastic trailer. Warrants the hype. The Video Game Awards should be interesting this year...so many stellar releases.

Getting my 'Longmire on' when this game comes out. I'm still currently playing my GOTY (God of War)... Spider-Man is around the corner and then this.

Whew.

My favourite aspect of this trailer is what I like to cutely call the "Shenmue-fication" of game mechanics.

I've always been a fan of game mechanics that aren't necessarily 'ideal' from a player fun and experience perspective, but adds significantly to world building or making the world feel more immersive. Stuff such as having the mechanic of needing to carry hunted animals to put on your horse - to carry them back to be sold, instead of how many games do them today - which is just to have them easily lootable immediately after hunting.

It's one of the few things that I think games don't do enough of - the pursuit of streamlining and making player experience be as smooth as possible means the end goal of the activity is often prioritized over the experience of the activity. The more that RDR2 has aspects like that ( tldr; obtuse game mechanics that are seemingly less-than-ideal at first glance, but add to the believable aspects of the world ), the more excited I am for it.

So gunplay seemingly hasn't evolved at all. Super casual extreme lock on. Disappointed.
That and movement (aka mash button to sprint) was its biggest holdup for me on IV and V. Shame neither seems to be different. Other than that, I'm liking what I'm seeing. Curious about its online setup.

Yeah, but I cant help but feel when games do this stuff they are sacrificing fun for realism.

Killing a bunch of animals and having to carry them back sounds boring as hell

Not exactly. But the amount of people saying this doesn't look all that impressive is eye rolling. Watch the breakdown video above.

Why does it bother you that some of us are completely blah about what we are seeing? You know what I find eye-roll worthy? All the dismissive lashing out by Rockstar stans ITT who can't accept other peoples opinions about a video game.

I'm using basic common sense, and taking into account Rockstar's most recent game, GTA V, where the AI has Terminator-levels of accuracy to compensate for most players using autoaim. Just about every game they put out has auto-aim as the default option, and it's blatantly obvious that the AI is tuned for it when you consider how much harder those games become when using free aim on a controller.
"Common sense" tells you that theyll repeat what they did on a 5 year old game even after the criticism towards it?

100% agreed. Empty mechanics without cause and effect, without consequence, without weight and animations just end up as aimless button presses. No attachment, no risk, no believability. You should have to be careful when shooting animals to gather skins, you should have to consider your surroundings when skinning the animal, you should have that tangible and visual reminder of your kill- laying on your horse decaying little by little. All of these things layered on top of the rest of the systems and interactions drive player created stories, and ground the game world. There is a place for rigor in games, something that a series like Far Cry has totally forgotten, ultimately becoming more and more hollow experiences with each entry post-Far Cry 2. This doesn't mean the game is no longer balanced for fun, but that every moment and action should be an important one.

I really didn't like the first game but it seems like they're changing up the basic open world and adding a bit more Oregon trail within it.

Looks great but most likely not for me.

It looks nice and sharp, but not as ground-breaking as I was hoping: both RDR and GTA V felt like huge leaps forward when we first saw gameplay.

This looks like what I'd expect GTA V to look like with a Pro patch. Given that there's a lot less geometry detail on this map, and it's been built from the ground up for current gen, I was hoping for a little bit more. Maybe they've gone heavier in areas that this trailer doesn't show off though.

The world looks gorgeous and with good diversity in locations. Better than i was expecting. Now im more curious to see what side activities are they gona implement for this one.

The graphic fidelity is certainly impressive, but I am not sure of the "next-gen" sentiments expressed here. I am less impressed of the current gameplay, but I am somewhat interested in the outlaw gang interactions. As much as I was a major fan of the Red Dead Redemption, I will likely get this somewhere later in the year. I want to know more about the narrative and characterizations more than anything else.

Other open world games that allow you to hoard an infinite number of animal hides often allow you to sell them for a cheap price or require an abnormally large amount of them for crafting precisely because it's really easy to have an absurd amount of animal parts in your pockets. I'd assume if every animal you kill in RDR2 requires you to carry it to your horse and then take it back to camp that the reward per animal would be significantly higher than the norm.

God of War,Horizon,Spiderman and so far The Last of US 2 look all better than what ever game we've seen so far on the X
So it should be more like "Hopefully they took their time to make the PS4 Pro Version as good as they can to rival these juggernauts" :)

This will be fun
Can't wait to see how the Online Modes will look like and how much they improved it over GTA Online.

How many first party Sony games are 4k or 60 fps? MS games are all native 4k and with 60 fps mode .Gears 4 in 4k looks way better than UC4 on my TV . Image quality is insane .

X hardware is way more stronger and there is no way Pro can match it unless dev not doing good job with port .

Seeing that you were playing poker with cents it seems the money is a lot more precious this time. I can definitely see there being a hefty reward for hunting once. It probably leaving your camp feed for a good while

I've viewed the PS4 version on YouTube, and downloaded the 4K PS4 footage from Gamersryde. I'm no expert in the area, but the Xbox 1X version is popping right off the screen to me. Am I the only one to notice the difference? DF needs to drop a comparison video asap!
Yup but difference is pretty minute. Nothing much.

What's the story in in this one? The first one had a pretty clear hook by chasing Bill to get your freedom. Have they revealed the objective here?

This game is gorgeous, but it looks nothing like a next gen title. Some of y'all crazy. The visuals here are what we've been seeing all gen. There are already other open world games (released and unreleased) that look better. Anthem, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Forza Horizon 3 & 4, and Ghost of Tsushima, to name a few.

Animation, however, is pretty incredible. Doesn't look as insane and realistic as ND's TLoUP2 work, but I'd say what's shown in this trailer puts Rockstar at a close second.

Anthem spiderman and got arent even out for us to know just what their scope is. Fh3 does not look better than this not to mention thats a racing game with far less work to do in the world its emulating.

Horizon probably looks better in certain aspects but even then, talking like this is something very common is hilarious. Nothing else thats released has horizon like fidelity right now on consoles.

If I were to say that I feel something about the actual presentation of the game looks... sterile compared to RDR, would anyone know what I mean? It's objectively pretty, but...

I think the actual gameplay details are great, but it was pretty much just a recap of the previews for those that didn't read 'em.

You play as Arthur Morgan, who's a member of the Van der Linde gang. After you screw up a robbery, you're chased across the country by lawmen and bounty hunters, while also dealing with internal divisions that threaten to tear the gang apart.
