Always felt Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light as one of the most beautiful games on DS

Let's pretend to be shocked that the most impressive early 3D game on the system was developed by Shin'en.

I've never played it, but I've always wanted a copy of Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword.

I think it looks pretty good for a DS game.

edit: actually, I'm not sure if this is emulator footage or not.
Here's the IGN video review, I don't think they'd use an emulator to capture footage. That might just be me being naïve, though.

Yeah that looks about right. From my memory anyways. I came to post this. I loved that game. And while it was kind of odd, it did look good in motion.

And I will give another vote to Okamiden. I loved it, visually speaking.

I kinda wish they had of stuck with that art style for the follow up games with the Bravely series and now Octopath. Don't get me wrong all the games in this series (kinda series) look amazing, just the idea of 4 Heroes of Light but progressed to HD would be amazing.

Matrix Software was on a huge roll with the DS. They also did 4 Heroes of Light, FFIII, FFIV, Avalon Code and Nostalgia, which are all pretty wonderful looking games.

Part of why the Nintendo DS had so many games running at 60fps is because the hardware could draw 2048 polygons per frame and no more.

Per frame instead of per second? Why couldn't they halve the frames to double the polygons produced in the same time period?

I thought it was more that the hardware was simple enough that framerate was basically a function of how many polygons (or maybe it was vertices) you had on the screen, with 60fps basically being guaranteed as long as you stayed under a certain threshold.

Definitely the Kingdom Hearts games (358/2 Days and Re:coded). Scaled up on an emulator they come damn close to the PS2 entries.

Yeah, Ghost Trick is really beautiful to look at.

For me personally, I'll say Ninja Gaiden Dragon Sword. Not only was it incredibly fun to play (multiple times), it was beautiful to look at. The animation was so fluid, and the approach of doing polygonal models over pre-rendered backgrounds allowed them to really compose a great looking game on such limited hardware.

No Dragon Quest IX mention? I always felt it was one of the best looking DS games, almost looked as good as a PSP game if the resolution were a little higher.

Man this thread is really making me miss that low-poly OG DS look. Led to some really cool and unique looking games in those constraints.

Not much love for Mario Kart DS. That game was impressive as hell to me when it first launched (having a pretty full featured Mario Kart with those graphics and online on the OG DS felt like such a huge leap forward coming off GBA).

Man, those shots of DS games running on an emulator. Is it a pain in the butt to rip your games? I still have a tonne of DS stuff I want to get through.
