All batteries, even lithium ion, degrade over time. I wish the PS4 and Switch had removable battery packs.

Nah I'm good fam I'd rather the lithium ion, however, the I do frequent the rechargeable battery that you can purchase from Best Buy for $24.99 I honestly think they should come with that rechargeable battery since these controllers cost so much

I'm not doubting the Switch Pro battery life so much as I am your DS4 battery life. I've played over 10 hours of Yakuza 0 on Steam using a DS4 since I last charged it. If the Switch Pro Controller gets 40 hours, that's still only 4x as much.
Looking back through my play history, I think I vastly underestimated how much I used my Switch/how much I've played it in the past few months. It's definitely a lot more than a 10 hour battery life.

Well in that case, your DS4's battery is actually lasting longer than Sony says it will. It's only rated for 4-8 hours.

(And, personally, I always get on the low end of that scale)

It's not what I meant. Just don't like AA batteries.
And you don't have to use them if you don't want to.

That's the whole point of designing a system that allows options. Now, you don't have to use AAs because you don't like them, and I can use rechargeable AAs because I very much prefer them. That's better than a system that forces everyone to one solution or the other.

Worst thing about the xbox controllers. I always laugh at these threads with people scrambling to defend it.
I laugh at the people who arbitrarily think AA batteries are bad. There is zero downside to having the option to use them. There is an official rechargeable battery, and you can use rechargeable AAs if you want. The people who just blindly shit on AA batteries are dumb. Plain and simple.

Maybe you have a new model DS4? The original only had a 1000mAh (maybe 1300mAh?) battery... I'm lucky to get more than 2 hours before the the system alerts me of the low battery status (when it was new I could get about 4 until notice 5 1/2-6 until DEAD..

I wish my sixaxis controllers used AAs instead of whatever is inside that can barely hold a charge anymore. I've been buying rechargeable packs and wall chargers since I bought my first portable CD player more than a decade ago and it has never been a problem. Having to replace the whole thing is such a hassle, when a perfectly good piece of hardware will last you a lifetime otherwise.

Rechargeable batteries is the way to go.

Plus since your can use a wire with the XBO if you don't have batteries, it's the best setup right now IMO.

If you mean the one with the light bar visible from the front, no. My current one was bought Black Friday 2015, the one before that was a launch controller (got rid of that one, had the poor quality stick issue).
Maybe the PS4 drains the battery much faster than it does when connected to a PC? I haven't played much of my PS4 recently, it's basically just an exclusives machine for me. The vast majority of my DS4 use is connected to the PC via the official wireless dongle.

I bought an extra PS4 controller, not so that I can play local multiplayer, but rather so that I have something to swap to after my first one inevitably dies after a few hours or dies in standby after I didn't use it for a few weeks.

I have a bunch of eneloops + charger for my Xbox that I bought for a lot less money than that second PS4 controller.

A controller that will last you 20+ hours versus 5 hours...oh the humanity. I wish I had the option to use decent rechargeable batteries in my DS4's.

Even without buying extra charge stuff, I like not having to plug in my Xbox One controller for weeks at a time. When I had my PS4 it was pretty annoying, honestly. It felt like a constantly dying phone.

$60? Damn. I see the white one on sale quite often here in the U.K. for about £34.

Although I don't have an XBO, I do like this AA battery option. Just think, you can use it in 10, 20 or even 30 years without worrying about battery capacity dying out.

What if I told you this wasn't the first one we've had like this in the last couple of months?

It's like the twilight zone.

Well yeah, and the last one had a poll as well showing people favoring batteries with the optional rechargeables or a battery pack... which should be pretty telling considering this is a predominantly PS4 and Nintendo user website.

Yes, seriously, because they are the BEST. They last longer in every aspect.
Buy Eneloop batteries and forget li-ion batteries. They will die, ALL OF THEM and will be ALWAYS harder to replace li-ion batteries than AAA batteries.

You can pick one up for $45-50 brand new on Amazon right now in White, Blue, Black and that Minecraft Green one or the Grey/Green which is $55... I wouldn't be buying the $60 at all, if I'm reaching that far you might as well throw out another $10 and buy a completely customized one from MS or that gorgeous new Sport White Special Edition.

Idea!

1. Put rechargeable batteries in your controller, or buy a battery pack.

2. Glue the battery cover shut. Make sure that shit can't be opened easily.

Your only way of charging is now to plug the controller in.

You did it!

People try to justify this decision by saying they prefer it over built in batteries but then a removable rechargable battery pack could have been included. Including nothing is inexcusable.

Rechargable, user repleacable batteries should be the standard, so good on MS for the Xbox One Controller. I have two, one came with the cable, the other I use wireless.

You can buy the controller with a play and charge kit, and regularly find it for the price of a standard controller. I've never paid $60 for an Xbox controller and I wouldn't use the play and charge kit anyway, so I prefer to have an option without it. What's inexcusable, but something you'll find a horde of defenders for, is a controller that has a 4 hour battery life like the PS4 controller.

It's awful and people like to pretend it's pro-consumer. They cheap out of it and you get to sit on the cost for extra batteries. It's not like it comes with a rechargable but removable battery pack. Degradation matters little to none for a typical controller life cycle. Chances are, it'll fail in some other way, before battery becomes an issue. Let alone the ability to play via cable.

I'm really grateful that most console manufacturers actually put batteries in their controllers, acknowledging we're in the fucking 21th century. The defense force for this shit is such a case study in Stockholm syndrome.

And no, this "people who have tried both prefer AAs" is bullshit. I've had wireless 360 controllers and tons of rechargeable AAs for over a decade; it still sucks.

Lol wow never thought I'd see a whole thread of people defending AA batteries used for...anything in 2018.

You will keep seeing that until Microsoft stop using them (assuming no other console manufacturer go back to them to in the meantime).

Exactly. My PS3 controllers all have random button issues that render them pretty much unusable, but their batteries still hold up charge for hours of play. Controllers aren't built to last for more than a few years, sadly.

Never understood the AA hate. I much prefer controllers with AA batteries. The battery in one of my PS4 controllers completely died and now it just sits there collecting dust cause I gotta spend about $15 for a battery, have the right tool, and take it apart and replace the battery. I hope MS never switches from AA batteries.

Yeh who wants a cheap and easy way to keep their controller powered up with new fully charged batteries for the life of the controller instead of just the life of the battery?

I will never understand this complaint. User changeable batteries are far superior, especially given they sell a cheap play and charge kit as well, which then makes it like it has a built in rechargeable battery if that's what you want.

I've got a stack of eneloops always charged and it takes 2 seconds to swap them over if I run out of battery (though I just play wired these days).

At least you didn't use the cringey "fumbling with AAs" that most of these threads do, as if using your hands is some great challenge.

Because people think anything that wasn't invented in the last 10 years is Savage and should be thrown away.

Same people who think that plugging every single thing into the wall is a superior method to swappable batteries cause it's newer.

Actually it's awesome, I can store my Xbox controllers in my coffee table drawer and never have get up and plug them in.

Way more convenient.

The pro-AA batteries comments are so weird. Like have any of you purchased a portable device in the last five years? Nobody uses removable batteries anymore for a reason. They're inconvenient and pointless for something like a game controller. But hey, if you enjoy spending more money for no good reason, then removable batteries are great!

Inconvenient until you need to replace them.

Every Playstation 3 controller I have has a stale battery in it. The Ps4 I bought last year goes dead after 4 hours of use. One of my Asus ROG laptops has a stale battery that isn't serviceable without disassembly. My Nvidia Shield TV Pro shipped with built in batteries that take 2 days to charge. It is an absolute pain in the ass.

My Xbox 360 pads from 10 years ago are still good with fresh AA batteries. The One and Steam controllers too. NiMH batteries are cheap and last long.

The whole argument is stupid.

I'm not upset that I have to use batteries, I am just in shock that this thing costs as much as it does and requires batteries. I've had my pro controller since Day 1 and it's still giving me like 75 hours per charge. It's 2018, this controller should have a built in battery or be about $20 cheaper.
Lol how much do you think a battery costs? It's be cents cheaper.

Also lol at people acting like $60 is some premium top tier money.

Nah, dude, wires running all over the place is so much better. I can't wait until all of my remotes go internal batteries so I can plug all of them in too!
