The Animated Spider-Man movie looks good. They should focus on making more of them and leave the live action stuff to Marvel, because Venom looks a massive step backwards from Spider-Man Homecoming.

Sony should really take advantage of their good relationship with Marvel because they have been making hit after hit, while Sony have been struggling to make good superhero movies for ages.

Hopefully bankruptcy.

After Raimi's Spider-Man series, Sony has failed to be a good steward of its Marvel properties.

Sony has the rights to all Spider-Man characters. If they didn't have the rights to Miles how would his uncle even be in the movie? :D

I get that. I'm saying I'm curious if they're contractually unable, for this period of time, to produce a live-action Miles, a restriction that would be theoretically lifted if the deal wasn't renewed. (I do expect it to be renewed.)

There's a deleted scene on the Homecoming disc where Prowler calls Miles on the phone and refers to him by name. So I don't think they have their hands tied there.

Who do you expect to bend the knee then? Disney or Sony?

Who knows. Maybe Marvel gives up a cameo, figuring most people can separate the two. (Conversely, Venom could enter the MCU in a few years and I'm not sure audiences would mind/remember. Easy to see that being seeded in Cosmic MCU.) Or if Venom only does okay, maybe Sony realizes becoming the bad guys that stole away Spider-Man from the MCU will taint their brand. It just makes a lot of sense for both sides to find another deal.

Sorry, I meant the flip side: if *Sony* is prevented from doing a live-action Miles.

This is all so weird. Why didn't they just try to make better Spider-Man movies instead of doing the deal with Marvel and trying to make all these inane spinoffs work? Trying to make a movie about fucking Jackpot seems like more of an uphill climb than trying to do a Spider-Man centric universe that people actually like this time.

Marvel should pay Sony to rent the rights, and Sony should just make a animated Marvel universe tbh.

Yes, I like this idea. Marvel gets to do whatever with live action Spidey but Sony can build a proper animated universe of characters. With how good Spider-Verse is looking I'd be very happy to see more films directly related to that, whether it's about Black Cat or Fisk or Doc Ock or Spider-Gwen or whatever. They can be more outlandish with the animated films and not worry about having to stick to 'realism' as they would with live action.

Yea it would be a win win for both parties. Give Sony a percent of live action Spider-Man sales, meanwhile they can focus on the animated universe. Spider-Gwen is dope, Black Cat and Silk team up, maybe even let the Avengers make an appearance or two (nothing major).

Involve time travel in one and involve Spider-Man 2099, etc. Possibilties are limitless and i think the audience would find it refreshing.

Jesus fucking Christ a PG-13 Venom movie...

Thats the straw for me. The most recent trailer shook me hard but this news broke my spirit.

Can someone please post the Thanos gif of him teleporting the fuck out.

Thanks.

Sounds like you expect Disney to bend the knee. We'll see.

It's not a win win. Marvel/Disney want all rights 100% back in house. Sony already gets a percentage of the live action movies (on top of the regular profit as a production company/distributor).

Disney ain't doing that. Sony doesn't want that.

Sony gets profits because they also funded the project big time. I'm saying Disney should fund the movies and just give Sony a percentage. Disney would actually make more money with a likeable Spider-man because they own the merchandise rights. Out of any Superhero Spider-man sells the most merchandise.

Of course the studios wouldn't be completely happy with it, but lets look at the other solutions.

1.) Sony keeps the franchise, says fuck off Disney. This is a loss for Disney. They spent time setting up a universe for Peter, integrating him, setting up the future with hints for Miles, etc.

2.) Sony sells him. It really doesn't matter for how much, this is a loss for Sony. Spider-Man is extremely profitable and well-liked. This would be a short term idiotic move like selling his merchandise rights and TV rights. This ultimately would be a loss for Sony.

But overall this way both studios still make money, and Sony has flexibility for the future.

Sony doesn't just get a percentage, they get all of the profits from the Spider-Man movies. Homecoming and Far From Home are completely Sony Pictures movies released through Colombia.

The difference is that Marvel Studios is handling the production of them, and is able to do them much cheaper and as a result Sony gets a lot more profit for a lot less money.

Amazing Spider-Man 2 cost upwards of $300 million. It "flopped" with only $700 million.

Homecoming was made for about $175 million. It made $880 million.

It's a much bigger profit for them having Marvel Studios produce the movies, they benefit greatly from the situation. There's no way they can justify to shareholders to back out on a situation where they're making more money than they did before the arrangement came to be.

In exchange Marvel gets a strong Spider-Man brand for merchandise, since Disney owns the Spider-Man merchandise rights 100%.

Sony gets that and a percentage of the gross that Disney has to pay them for every SM movie (and related characters) that they produce.

Disney used to pay 3.5% of the gross to Sony. They now pay a bit less, but still pay a percentage of the gross to Sony. That's because of the 2011 deal where Sony bought out Disney's participation in the movie and Disney bought Sony's 25% rights in SM merchandise.

SM classic merchandise is a pretty consistent seller. Movie specific merchandises get temporary boosts during a movie release and then taper off. That's true even for bad movies like Amazing 2.

The path we are on either leads to Sony yanking him from the MCU or Disney eventually reacquiring all the rights.

Option 1 is not that big a loss for Disney. Option 2 is not that big a loss for Sony even if they don't divest the film division of SPE (which they should).

Sony gets all the profits from the SM movies + a percentage of the gross. Disney specifically calls out they have to pay the licensee in their SEC filings and the leaked documents showed us that was 3.5% with a cap of 35MM per movie.

Leaked documents also showed us the consistency of classic SM merch sales with the occasional boost, even with bad movies.

Sony definitely wants to resign. Disney wants to resign.....if they make more amendments to the contract where Sony loosens their grip on the license. It's questionable whether or not Sony will accept that. It'll also depends on what Disney will ask to change.

EDIT:

Here

Prior to the Company's acquisition of Marvel in fiscal year 2010, Marvel had licensed the rights to third-party studios to produce and distribute feature films based on certain Marvel properties including Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and X-Men. Under the licensing arrangements, the third-party studios incur the costs to produce and distribute the films, and the Company retains the merchandise licensing rights. Under the licensing arrangement for Spider-Man, the Company pays the third-party studio a licensing fee based on each film's box office receipts, subject to specified limits. Under the licensing arrangements for The Fantastic Four and X-Men, the third-party studio pays the Company a licensing fee and receives a share of the Company's merchandise revenue on these properties. The Company distributes all Marvel-produced films with the exception of The Incredible Hulk, which is distributed by a third-party studio.

Those limits were 35MM per movie with a cap of 130MM per 10 year period. They were changed in 2015, subject to certain BO milestones, but we don't know what they were changed to.

Said this many times before but I was told that the studio wants all these "Spidey free Spider-Man films" brought in (quote) "for a price".

That means that they don't intend to spend much on them compared to Disney and WB.

When you keep that in mind this actually makes a lot of sense. They want to compliment Marvel's output rather than compete with them as they are chasing the same Marvel audience.

WB had a huge hit with Wonder Woman.

Sony will have their own super strong feminine warrior icon in Jackpot.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

WB has Harley Quinn and Birds Of Prey.

Sony will get in on the "female hero craze" by cooking up something with Silver Sable and Black Cat.

WB potentially has Deathtroke in the offing.

Sony will reverse engineer Kraven into their own Deathstroke style film.

What better way to not compete with Marvel for the Marvel audience by rubbing the serial numbers off of DC films and serving them up with some old Marvel properties instead?

What the fuck is a Jackpot?

A character introduced in a comic given away on 'Free Comic Book Day'.

This alone makes me think that someone at Sony is mocking us.

Or trying to make something that sounds like an Onion headline an actual film.

I hope this works out unlike say Universal's Dark Universe solely so it can build up to what's sure to be an absurdist culture-jamming masterpiece: Waiting for Spider-Man. a bunch of non-spider-man spider-man characters waiting in an empty space for spider-man, occasionally asking each other questions like "have you seen spider-man?" "when was spider-man supposed to get here?" "should we keep waiting for spider-man?"
One man yells out "GIVE ME SPIDERMAN!"

This all sounds terrible and completely predictable, can't wait for this cinematic universe obsession to pass. I know it won't be anytime soon but I'm totally ready for it lol

I still say they're trying to pressure Disney/Marvel into buying the rights back.

"Oh, you don't think we'll actually make the Venom movie? You think we're bluffing? Okay then.."

What the fuck is a Jackpot?

When Peter first met Mary Jane she said "Face it, tiger, you just hit the jackpot!"

(It's the second most famous line in the entire canon. Only bested by the "With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility.")

Flash forward to after the Spider-Man's marriage to MJ was erased. During this era, a red haired woman that resembles MJ appears. She's a new superheroine named "Jackpot." And her whole thing was "Is this MJ?"

And then she wasn't and everyone stopped caring about her.

Sony going full steam ahead with this shitshow makes me feel pretty bad about the likelihood of them extending their deal with Marvel. If Spidey gets pulled from the MCU after only 2 solo movies I'm gonna be pissed.
I mean, they're introducing the concept of spiderverse in Miles movie. I see no problem why MCU and Sony can't have their own separate spider-man.

Just make it so Sony SpiderMan is grown up and not Tom Holland and I can see it working

So they only have one superhero and the related characters, so they're doing a bunch of cillain movies without including Spider-Man? Weird

This seems like something fans of comics would like. Marvel/Disney can't make movies about all of the characters, there's just too many. There are bound to be interesting stories in these characters that Sony has access to. From my time looking at back stories to characters I unlocked in Marvel heroes, I was always fascinated about these characters I never knew about, characters that may never get a shot at having a movie in the MCU, streaming/network tv.

When Venom was announced, I read reactions here, and absorbed the same feelings. The latest trailer made me shake all of that off and I'm loving what I'm seeing. Venom looks amazing, and I liked the turd in the wind part. Seems like something a alien not familiar with this world would say, also reminded me of Pickle Rick (helpless pickle in the wind and rain).

You have good taste lol. I agree and would add MOS as well
I loved Man of Steel. The Smallville fight and Faora was awesome.

except Wonder Woman, Logan, Deadpool 1 & 2, etc

Shazam, Aquaman, Animated Spider-Man also have great vibes

people just like good comic book movies, it's not a conspiracy

Wonder Woman was only after the fact, don't pretend folks weren't snarky and down on the movie before it came out.
Same thing happened with X-Men First Class.

Like folks tend to be more negative for months until the movie proves itself, and I know someone will say "Well it's because XYZ" and that's fine, but it gets annoying when even the hint of an announcement is met with nothing but snark and cynicism, why would anyone want to engage with that?

"Don't pretend"?

People understand a track record - if a string of duds come out, humans are less likely to feel positive about a new release by the same folks.

There is fanboyism, sure, but put the crazies on ignore and move on. There's a reason my MCU engagement has been better since I ignored some of Eras more annoying mcu fanboys.

This is my same opinion. I'm all in on Sony exploring lesser known Spider-Man properties.

Marvel has its hands full and is about to get X-Men and Fantastic Four. They can only produce so many movies a year. Sony has Spider-Man and Valiant. Warner has DC. Let them utilize their IP and hopefully we'll come out with creative and interesting movies that fans of comics (and not just one company) can enjoy. It'll only motivate the others to produce even better films.

Sony has their hands full with Valiant - a much more compelling concept than a spidey-less spideyverse.

Audiences are ready to fall in love with Valiant , but Sony is too stuck on this terrible idea to commit
