Perhaps this is what makes We Happy Few so unusual. It is beautifully, carefully written. The words that come out of this game are better than anything I can recall in even the best narrative adventures. The script has clearly been elevated to a place of prime importance. It's been honed by writers and actors working together to create a coherent universe that's as frightening as any hellscape dreamed up in more lavish fantasies. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary to play, you've found it.

An ambitious, stylish and savage takedown of British hubris, but clunky crafting, collecting and combat make for a somewhat dull game.

That said, I can't help but think that early access has potentially soured the experience for those who were as excited for this game years and years ago as I was. If you're in that group, I implore you to give the game another try — it's certainly worth reconsidering.

Eek. Got this on my rental queue.

Polygon review seems pretty positive?

After completing all three story acts, I found that I enjoyed the journey the game took me on, but I was also overwhelmingly relieved that it was finally over. At the end of the day, We Happy Few leaves me feeling conflicted. I don't ever want to put myself through that resource management slog ever again, but I can't discount its sharp wit and captivating writing either. Ultimately, I can't bring myself to give We Happy Few a wholehearted recommendation for the average player. This is a game that will test your patience, and if you're willing to stick it out, you'll be rewarded with a good story that was only let down by weird design decisions and flawed execution.

What I get from the reviews is that MS now has an incredibly talented narrative studio at their hands.

Fairly polarizing so far, as I expected. Some 8 and 9s and then some 5 and 6s

After disliking We Happy Few in Early Access I was half-expecting to loathe it at launch, and there is a lot that I loathe about it: the lumpy brawling, the showers of trinkets that usually amount to nothing, the branching scenarios that only make you yearn for Dishonored's vertical mazes and chaining abilities. But for everything I dislike, there is an element of the universe and writing that grabs me by the ears. A series of damning jokes about Brutalism, that architectural aesthetic so beloved of dystopian storytellers. A series of quests that take the piss out of Macbeth. The use of quizshow formats and Simon Says to root out non-conformists. Uncle Jack's impersonation of Mary Queen of Scots. And above all, the way these shift and expand as you interrogate them from the perspectives of some very different people, in the course of an often deranged, but very serious and multi-faceted interrogation of history and hubris. I'm not sure the game is worth your time, but if you can find the time, you'll find much to ponder.

Stay tuned for our full review after we complete the retail version of We Happy Few, which will be updated in time and remain at this very URL.

Most of all, it's trying something new that we really haven't had much experience with, and to fantastic effect. If you're as terrified of a dystopian society as I am but also endlessly fascinated by it, then We Happy Few is for you. Just be sure not to forget your Joy! We wouldn't want you labeled as a Downer, now would we?

Few will be happy with the game it seems.

Looks like this solidifies the 'wait for heavy discount' decision I made.

There's a huge amount of potential in this dystopian 1960s drug trip, but ultimately it starts to feel frustrating quite quickly. Every time We Happy Few draws you in with an interesting tidbit about the world or the character you are playing as it's scuppered by the systems fighting against you. It just becomes frustrating and makes a potentially immersive experience an irritating exercise in dealing with the game mistaking your intentions. Much like the dystopian world in which it is set, We Happy Few never feels quite right.

Wait for Sale
Too many tech issues, quest issues, balance problems to suggest running out. That being said there are some massive highlights. The story stuff is actually quite interesting and a TON of it.
Thanks. Gonna watch now but it's looking like it's lining up with my expectations, which is sad to say given the potential.

Edit holy shit that frame rate drop on distant NPCs ugh. I can forgive that shit in EDF with 70 fucking giant ants on the screen but this is gross. really close cut off too.

So if I bought this game when it was in Game Preview a couple of E3's ago I dont need to do anything else other than press start and I get this new narrative experience?

Sounds like compelling writing marred by game ruining awful gameplay from some of those reviews. I wonder if the devs will continue to iron out the gameplay in future patches. Might be a good game to sit on.

This game is reviewing all over the place, a few high scores a few low ball scores.

Sounds like it's not for everyone, but this summary sounds pretty amazing to me:

Sounds like the story is good, but seeing the reviews talk about resource slogs turns me off. I got no time for that shit unless there's a difficulty level that renders it moot.

good to know the story is good at least, gives hope for their future titles.

when i played the first version of we happy few, gameplay was super annoying and just not fun. despite them claiming to completely rework the game from the "survival" first draft, i doubted things would change that much. seems like i was right.

As far as I'm aware, only PC codes were sent for reviews, so hearing tech issues for this version makes me kinda unease for consoles...
