Mod edit: Graphic content warning.

Sadly, there was a woman in the car and she died, probably drowned, they found her hours later in the lake.

So, there has been some people that I know that say that they would have tried to save the person in the car. So the point of this thread is to ask you what would you do if you were the person filming this accident?

1. Would you get in the lake and try to help the person?
2. Run to try and get some help?
3. Stay in shock and do nothing.
4. Run away.

I can't swim, so either use a cell phone to call for help or hoof it somewhere where I can get help.

Edit: Although even if I could swim I don't think I'd just dive in. A lot of people who aren't trained for water rescues die trying to save others.

I would have called for help then tried. I can swim well and the water looks easy to swim through.

Holy shit that video is awful. What a fucking awful last couple of seconds.

I don't know. No one really knows till the moment. I'd like to say I would be 1, but I don't know how I would react in the moment.

I would inmediately call the emergency services, and after I know they're coming I would swim and try to get her out, but if she's too deep or something and I know I can't possibly do anything I would stop. But I would at the very least get to her and analyse the situation.

In other words, I wouldn't unnecessarily risk my life, but if I feel I can safely get over there I would do it and see what I can do (if I can do anything at all) but only AFTER I've already contacted the emergency services and know they're on their way

That being said, I have no idea how dangerous it is to swim in a lake. I live in an island and lakes literally don't exist here. I've never tried to swim in a lake

I....don't really want to watch that video to be honest

I'd like to say that I would try to help but I would probably be frozen in shock, at least for some time

This person seemed too far away to jump in. I would probably call for help or run for help. I would hope my instincts wouldnt be to just stand there and keep filming

I mean 2 is the only real option. The guy filming was on the other side of the lake, so unless they're a very strong swimmer, they're not going to have the strength to do much once they get there.

The water looked quite shallow so if it seemed safe I like to think I'd swim across and try to help. I imagine most likely I'd phone the emergency services though.

Call help
Can't do shit in that situation, that's way too dangerous, you're not jason bourne

Also she probably died before hitting the lake, that fall down the hill is brutal

There wasn't shit that person could do besides call, which they presumably did after the video. They likely didn't know if there were animals or a current to worry about in that lake. Assuming that the conditions in the lake were good, they knew the conditions were good, and they were a skilled swimmer that knew CPR, that car was far off and would have to be drowning incredibly slowly for them to rescue the person. Even in that scenario, I'd be worried the car could explode or something sketchy was going on. Hell, it wasn't even clear from the video that a person was in the car.

Call help and try to get her out myself.

What, did the person filming just walk off or something?

What the fuck? he just ignores it?

But I would at the very least get to her and analyse the situation. Wtf, that person is heartless

In other words, I wouldn't unnecessarily risk my life, but if I feel I can safely get over there I would do it and see what I can do (if I can do anything at all) but only AFTER I've already contacted the emergency services and know they're on their way

the video is 45 seconds long and he is clearly in shock at the start because he starts moving and cuts the film pretty quick

pretty harsh to call them heartless given that you actually know fuck all about the situation

He looked like he was trying to get to a different vantage point (likely to determine if someone was actually in the car, or if the person in the car was able to get out) then cut off filming in order to make a call.

Also, note that when the video begins, he's not remotely focused on the car. This isn't really a situation of someone grimly recording a death. It's someone who was already filming something different noticing the car, recording it while in shock for about 10 seconds, then quitting filming.

I think the only thing I could do is call for help.
-I don't have the strength to swim all the way across the lake and more leftover to help. Even if I did;
-I don't think a person could survive in a car crashing downhill like that?

I'd call for help. And I'd like to believe that depending on the situation I'd try to help.

Like if I think I can help realistically. If the car is upside down and catching on fire I'd like to have a fire extinguisher of some sort in my car for emergencies. One of those specialized car window breakers if it's underwater and shallow enough.

Call for help.

Based on that video, it doesn't look like there's much you can do especially if you can't swim.

I'm not surprised they were slow to react, that was pretty crazy to watch on a phone let alone real life.

I would phone for help as it isn't going to be a pretty sight and the car will be a tangled mess even without the water involved.

Awful situation. Assuming you are alone, I think the best course of action may be to call 112 and say "I just saw a car plunging into a river, I'll try to help, I'm at X, leaving the phone unatended in the shore" and dive in. Otherwise you'd regret it your whole life, so what other choice do you have?

The other choice is to not get in the water like the person did.

That's what I thought too, but I was just wondering if there was something more behind the question. Like, I would think most people responding would help if they could. Who would post that they would do nothing or run away?

Awful video.

I would have stopped filming immediately and called for help. Then jumped in the water and do everything possible.

5. No clue because I'd probably be in shock and who knows what my brain would tell/allow me to do in a moment like that.

I think most people would call for help, only a select few would actually jump in and try to save the person, most do not have the mental fortitude for that or the physical capacity. I would definitely call for help, assuming there is cell phone coverage in that area or somewhere close by that I can notify someone.

I'd call for help but probably not jump in. I'm not that good of a swimmer but even if I was being able to come home to my wife and kids everyday is the most important thing for me and my number 1 goal in life so not worth the risk. However, I would not have stopped recording regardless of anything

What can you do but call emergency services in that situation. The fall itself looked bad enough, then going in the water on the otherside of the river, it's about all you can do outside of putting yourself in danger as well.

I'd like to think I'd try. Haven't seen the video, but if it was super high. I wouldn't jump in. And to crawl Down and try and get them out would probably be a lot longer to do than them surviving would be possible....so...I'd at least call 911.

I would definitely not put the video up online as this is the video of someone dying.
Other than that, I would call the authorities.

I would've gone for help. If the person hadn't managed to climb out of the wreckage and swam to shore they would be long dead by the time you managed to swim out to them.

At that distance I'd certainly run over there while calling for help. Might go in the water too if there weren't strong currents or something.

Call for help and then dive in. Ambulance wouldn't arrive in time to prevent her from drowning if she was still alive. Hell, the time I'd waste making the call could make the difference between life and death so maybe my priority would be to get her out of the car.

So the person filming was like "whatever" and just walked away?

I would have called 911 and then dove in.

Another situation I was tested:
I was in a parking lot for a basketball game, and I saw someone get run over by their own car when they stepped out to pay the meter without putting the car in park.

My reaction was to drop my girlfriend's hand and sprint 1/8 mile towards the person who got run over. My girlfriend just froze.

I was able to get that person to lay down and I called 911.

My girlfriend walked up to me, stood around, asked if there was anything she could do, and then went into the basketball game.

The paramedics took about five minutes to arrive. They said that the woman was in shock and was internally bleeding before putting her in the ambulance.

I remember that I could never look at my girlfriend the same way and it's ultimately why I think we broke up.

Call for help and go home right after making that call. I've been screwed enough times already trying to help someone.

I won't watch the video, I'm not a rubberneck. If I had a phone and could get a signal I'd call the emergency number and report the incident. I wouldn't go into the water because, although I can swim, I'm not confident enough of my ability to be any use in the water, and would likely put myself in danger.

Kudos to anybody who knows they are capable of assessing the situation and conducting a rescue. I'm an ancient old bugger so I would not be.

We did.

Ultimately, it wasn't that she froze, it was that she didn't care to wait the three minutes for the paramedics to show up. She just didn't want to lose the ability to get food before the game.

The woman that got run over was legitimately terrified and needed us to keep her calm. In my mind I couldn't get over the fact that I knew that if she wasn't dating me at the time, and that happened to me, she probably wouldn't have done anything at all.

I'm now married to someone who does Patient Care in the hospital.

I watched it and you are correct. The car tumbles and is in pieces when it hits the water. You could get killed yourself trying to mess with that.

The cameraman is on the wrong side of the lake as well.

Call for help and run round to the other side. I could probably run there quicker than I could swim and the car was quite close to the edge of the lake. But looking at it I don't think the water was the issue in that situation, for those who didn't watch, the car flips and tumbles 5 or 6 times down a long, steep hill, it looks like a complete wreck before it even gets to the water.

Seems like the woman was the passenger, his husband was the driver, he stoped to take some pics of the lake and the hand brake failed, sadly his wife stayed inside the car : /

News are reporting the car was found 15 meters deep and she still got the seat belt on ( hopefully she was unconscious after the crash), a special group of divers rescued the corpse.

The man screaming on the video is probably the husband : (
