The police shooting of 25-year-old Daniel Hambrick hasn't received as much national attention as some similar events have, but it's been the burning topic here in Nashville since it happened two weeks ago.
Initially there was no body cam or dash cam footage of the event, so there was only the officer's word to go by. But new surveillance footage was released today that shows Hambrick clearly running away when officer Andrew Delke shoots him in the back (and back of the head, apparently) and does not attempt to offer aid for a few minutes until backup arrives.
From a local news story: "According to police, Hambrick led officers on a chase. Once Hambrick pulled over on the corner of Jo Johnston Avenue and 17th Avenue North, police said he got out of the car with a gun. That's when the 25-year-old Metro police officer shot him. Hambrick died at the scene."
Video embedded here, Hambrick appears in the footage running around the corner of a building around 5:18. It's not close enough to be graphic or gory, but just a warning, this video shows someone getting shot and killed.
Another new wrinkle today: Nashville police say that Hambrick was stopped while they were searching for a stolen vehicle. The vehicle he was driving was not his, but it was owned by a family friend and according to her at a press conference today, he had permission to drive it.
Obviously this case is a bit different than others because based on what we know, it does seem like Hambrick was indeed armed with a handgun. But regardless, I think there is an increasing number of people who believe that suspects should not be shot while they are fleeing regardless of if they posses a weapon.
All of this comes in the wake of a similar shooting about a year ago that started a call for an official citizen oversight board of the police, which has been fiercely resisted by the police department and other officials.
