Any write-up from a professional gaming publication or site should never start with "We were lucky enough to visit *insert developer or publisher here*". That's some YouTuber shit, bugs me.

I have this on pre order but pretty torn. I still have to finish two of the Origins DLCs, I mostly enjoyed the main game but felt the ending was confusing and not good but the first half of the game was absolutely fantastic. I'm also playing Far Cry 5 and it feels like every Ubisoft game is essentially the same, "take few risks" kinda open world slog fest that starts out really good but just starts falling apart halfway thru. I'm not sure I really have it in me to start another one this year, especially since RDR 2 will be another open world game and somewhat as well Shenmue, Yakuza 2, and Rise of the Tomb Raider.

I also really don't like Ubisoft's "delivery" model anymore, where the base game is $60, then you get 3 DLCs for a $30-40 season pass and you can roll it all up into a gold edition for $100. Except the DLCs come out MONTHS later and by that time I am done with the game and have traded it in. Inevitably I regret buying many of these Ubisoft games at launch because 3-9 months down the road they are on 50% discount and I usually have only played a few hours too.

Its not Ubi's fault or anything, I just guess I'm getting a little burned out on their model. If the game had more Bayek I might be interested, although he's still not as favorite a character of mine as Ezio. It is weird that they are going to a new period and characters instead of sticking with Bayek, you'd think that would have been an obvious choice. Didn't they even say at one point they weren't going to put out a new AC game and instead continue Bayek's adventures? What the heck happened there...

Only here have I seen anyone give a crap about those that came before.

Everyone was saying a few years ago to cut that shut out, they did, and now it's treated like a great tragedy when this is what was asked for.

Mind boggling. Anyway, I am in. After months of jrpgs a wrpg with great combat and production will be refreshing for me.

Assassin s Creed is the most hated franchise on Resetera. Developers are destroyed about anything they did on each episodes.
Why ? Because the majority here thinkbm tgat each AC games is made in one year.

Call me a freak of nature but I mostly buy Assassin's Creed games for it's "First Civilization" storyline. To me still, Assassin's Creed 2 is the best. The thought provoking "Truth Puzzle Glyphs", Minerva and Subject 16's dire warnings, and the whole Secret Society of the Templars was mind blowing. I want THAT feeling again while playing AC. Playing in different time periods is nice, but the whole "Those That Came Before" story arc is what separates Assassin's Creed games from all the rest.

To be honest, the different settings aren't that big of a draw to me anymore. Back in the Ezio days, seeing Rome or Cappadocia fully realized visually was amazing, but mostly because that type of open world experience was still somewhat novel at the time.

But now that the novelty wore off, I don't think Assassin's Creed really utilizes the settings they choose to their fullest. Apart from a couple of missions and the Egyptian gods DLC stuff, almost everything about Origins could have just as well been content for an Assassin's Creed game set in old Greece or Russia or wherever. The storylines are always the super basic "Poor people suffer because of rich people's greed", which is universal. You can get glimpses of actual culture from the time period portrayed in the game through codex entries and in some of the dialogue from side quests, but none of that is ever actually reflected in the gameplay itself.

Of course, it's still super cool seeing the pyramids and stuff like that, but not enough that I'd be willing to fork out $60 year after year just to have the same experiences in different scenic routes.

Edit: The Hippodrome races in Origins were a really cool addition in concept, and an example of the stuff I'd like to see more of in these games, but they sucked really bad u.u

Oh hey you are speaking for me too, how nice

Completely agree, AC games, Origins included are way too formulaic and checklisty. I much prefer design of games like New Vegas and Kingdom Come that are much more organic.
But I am curious about Odyssey because addition of interactive dialogue and choices with consequences is a pretty significant change for the franchise - hopefully for the better. They also had Steve Rhodes writing it, he wrote on Witcher 3 and many other games previously.

They'll price match over a month after you purchased the item?

Yes, I price match through my Citibank credit card though. They provide me 60 days to perform a price rewind through the website and up to 180 days to request.

BestBuy Elite Plus does provide 45 days but that still wouldn't be enough time for this particular situation.

Thank you for impressions! I'm still interested in Odyssey, though I'll probably skip the next AC.
