As a casual observer that has played a little bit of every Smash game, I can confirm that they are all literally 100% the exact same game except that one with the crazy story mode which is unquestionably the goat

Lol, RDR2 gameplay video, what's the bet it plays exactly the fucking same as every other trash manbaby Rockstar game for assholes.

King Dedede also got got. The Reaper is probably feet away from where he landed.

That's silly, because the whole core of competitive gaming is a deep love and respect of the mechanics. (I am not into the competitive gaming or anything but that's how I interpret their devotion to certain games.)

It's like--as an example game I can personally relate to--if you've played Starcraft 1 it's obvious that 2 will never, ever be able to replace it, because on a fundamental level it fails precisely because it is not Starcraft 1. It doesn't feel like an evolution of the first game so much a completely separate thing. Sure, it's in the same skin, but appearances aren't everything.
Comparing smash to Starcraft seems kind of out there. Like they talked about on the bombcast, actual fighting game players don't have an issue with moving on to the newer product.

To 99% of people melee is just a shittier looking Smash 4 with less characters. The people who sincerely care about the differences between them are insufferable and the fact that the game is still being held up as this competive masterpiece for so long after it released is lame. Jeff is 100% right when he says you all need to move on. It's so silly.

You are right, we should trash Melee because you and Jeff say so. Let's completely ignore the fact that Melee had almost as many entrants as Smash 4 and more than other featured games, and the Melee grand final was widely considered a better viewing experience then Smash 4. It also pulled in more viewers on Twitch.

While I personally like Smash 4 (and presumably Ultimate) more than Melee, it's pretty silly for people dictate by edict what games should be featured by when obviously both the community (based on entrants) and the viewing audience both enjoy both iterations. Evo will lose a lot of the spirit what makes it great if they make corporate decrees to please corporate overlords (e.g, only allowing Ultimate next year) instead of actually following the numbers of who wants to compete and view.

Starcraft is in that exact situation, though. Game 2 was never a proper successor to Game 1, so the scene (both competitive and casual, in Starcraft's case) just stayed centered around the first game.

It's ridiculous to frame people staying with the first game as... what, posers or something? I really hope Jeff & co. didn't frame it like that themselves, because that's just weirdly petty.
I should really listen to the pod myself, but I'm still backlogged.

The difference is that Melee has mechanical depth (partially due to glitches) that the later Smash games don't. Now you can say that's because Smash isn't a real fighting game, it's not meant to be played like this, etc. and you'd be right. But that doesn't change the fact that people play it competitively, and again, the sequels don't have the depth it has. If the sequel to Street Fighter doesn't have jump canceling or throw techs, I doubt you'd see SF players move on to the new one

A couple matches of Dragon Ball

Fair enough, this is probably the best reasoning I've seen so far. I still think it's dumb as hell but if people have clung onto that game for this long arguing about it is pointless.

Also, Smash new challenger trailers are the best trailers in the business.

this is true, and it's why them revealing all characters beforehand has a positive side, even if I like a little of the surprise of unlocks (by which I mean the surprise of seeing people post pictures them after unlocking them when the Japanese release comes out 3 weeks before the US and/or when the game leaks early)

it's just also extra sad that we're getting less new characters this time given how good those trailers are

if only... they, say, put that level of craft into some scenes for the game itself...

Smash fans should play a REAL fighting game like Digimon Rumble Arena

this is maybe the closest we've come to agreeing on something and it's a little scary

Melee's whatever, I have nostalgia for it but I'd so much rather play these newer games with more characters and other stuff I enjoy way more than "if I want to learn how to wavedash, I can"

I was about to jokingly say "shouldn't you like them now because they removed the cutscenes after Brawl" but then you pull this swerve

it's like I don't even know any of you anymore

I mean, I guess my point is on Friday and Saturday there are literally 5 different channels on Twitch of Evo streaming games, so I don't understand the hard on people have against Melee and Smash4 existing in the tournament scene. There is literally counter-programming for everything outside of the grand finals--you just need to change the channel.

The games are unplayable trash, so any excuse to not play them for a few seconds was sweet relief. 2008 Jubbe had to make the most of his game purchases because he wasn't flush with cash like 2018 Jubbe.

Just a random thought: How does Twitch still not have live DVR controls! It's 2018!! What's the point of having a pause button if when you resume the stream it jumps you to live? Almost every other streaming platform has live DVR controls, yet the biggest streaming platform doesn't.

There will be 4 Luigis when he returns.

Mark my words.

They don't even archive stuff permanently (by default, I guess) either. It's ridiculous. The explanation I heard--which covers both issues--was that it's about the current content (i.e. streams) rather than just videos, which I guess makes sense given what they are but it's still silly.

Waypoint streams on Twitch regularly and they need YouTube to actually archive all of their streams permanently. It is (or at least, should be) so needless.

Madden's pretty decent this year.
I did the 10 hour ea access trial on my buddy's xbox. Finished the "campaign" in Ultimate Team. I cant make myself buy it. It plays too similar to last year. This is the first year since '98 I'm not going to have the new Madden at release. I'm sure I'll eventually own it, but not right away. The weird twist, if they released it on Switch, I'd have bought it for my plane trips coming up.

I think I've hit a wall on video games, theres like nothing I'm interested in playing the rest of the year besides a Ps2 remake of Disgaea 1.I'll get to RDR2 eventually, but the fact its a prequel ruins any drama for me. Even Spider-man looks meh to me because they didn't bother to make it 60fps on the Pro. ITS A FUCKING SP GAME. Give me 1080p 60fps at the very least. Insomniac doesnt have the best track record for non Spyro/R&C games and even those are super repetitive so I dont think it will be that good.

I bought a PS4 Pro with that ebay 15% off coupon today, so we'll see if I keep it and dont flip it again.

I mean, WarioWare on 3ds is fun I guess.

I'm afraid Spider-man is going to be a bog standard open world action game rather than the Batman: Arkham game I want it to be.

I think I got burned too many times by other Spider-man games...

If it was Rocksteady or a company besides Insomniac, I'd have more faith in it being good, the fact they keep showing the same area and construction zone in all the gameplay videos bothers me. I've played through all the Spider-man games since the ps1 game, he's my favorite super hero, so I will play it eventually, but it just isnt grabbing me as a must have right now.

I've been playing Chrono Trigger for the first time recently and then watching the section of the Endurance Run that I just played (as I did with Persona 4 as well) and I'm looking forward to seeing how Ryan and Patrick did with the Magus fight because I just finished that and it was a bastard!

What I remember of the Arkham games outside of the first one, is that they are pretty standard open worldy games. As long as Spider-Man feels great to control and they don't lock the 'true-ending' behind a shitton of collectibles, I am down for this game.

To be fair though, I haven't played a Spider-Man game since Ultimate on the OG Xbox.

The thing with Batman: Arkham is, I think it works due to more than just the combat, even after Asylum. Batman has the predator gameplay, unlockables, light detective stuff, and fairly ambitious stories that really make it feel like a superhero's journey. Rocksteady always made the games a pure Batman experience that put it a step above comparable stuff.

So Spider-man needs its own twist. If it's just scripted missions, combat, and Spider-man 2-era webslinging that won't be enough. It needs some mechanics that give players an authentic Spider-man experience.

The combat seems interesting with a lot of moves that go beyond punch, punch, kick, occasional web shot to stick someone to the wall. Lotta interesting moves plus some environmental combat options, and the traversal looks good. Not sure what else you could give Spiderman to make it feel definitively Spiderman. Maybe if they pull a Persona and have you also spend time in school as Peter Parker and doing your job for the Daily Bugle and deal with splitting time between those things. (this may have already been announced, I haven't been paying attention. I only really know about the E3 demo and the recent thing they showed off a week or two ago)

He isnt in school in this version. Its a Spider-Man that has been at this for a while. From what i've heard though the Peter Parker sections of the game give it a nice different feel.

I wanna say they've mentioned that there's Peter Parker gameplay, but the E3 gameplay sutff I've seen (of Spider-man, no Parker stuff) has been incredibly standard.

The big escape mission last E3 (and the rescue mission the E3 before that(?) I think) was supposed to wow me, but it just looked like a rote story mission... I'm so tired of open world games siloing all the cool stuff in story missions.
