I get excited for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but then my hype always deflates because I have to spend a bunch of hours playing as characters I don't want to, to get the characters I might want to.

How is it ok to have all stages, but not characters.

How is anything OK? Life is meaningless. We are all just here temporarily and then we are gone, and that's Smash Bros.

To give some form of completion and accomplishment.

I like to earn things, not have them just spat at me.

There are other things to earn, why is the main content being locked away a good thing.

Because- why would I play if I had everything done for me already

Plus, didn't Sakurai say unlocks would be very easy this time to accommodate the vast amount of content?

I love it. Not only does it increase my playtime given I'll have to unlock things but it's a mark of progression. Besides that it allows me to test characters I wouldn't think about using in situations I don't expect.

I greatly prefer over having everything unlocked. Won't even touch a fighting game without unlocks as there isn't any reason to actually play it Melee was my favorite smash bros not because of the mechanics or roster but because of how much fun I had doing the zany obtuse requirements needed to unlock different fighters.

We live in the age of filling bars to unlock new things, so unlocking characters still has its place.

unlocking characters took less time than ever in smash 4, and i imagine it will be the same in ultimate

because I want to play the game more than just 3 matches, it makes the game have a longer life, which is good for something as hardly produced as smash, it makes me actually play the game.

people like trophies and achievements for the same reason

though for some reason some people shame them for the same exact reason

progression and or feeling of accomplishment

Because apparently the people above me exist. I loathe unlocking characters; just give people other shit to unlock.

It feels good to have progression in a game. Remember that only a very tiny percentage of people who buy games are competitive. Most are casual and for them (and for many competitive people too) it's a thrill to unlock characters.

For a casual player, the characters are the main draw. It's fun to work toward that character you really want to play and get them. Most people don't want to work to perfect their gameplay and that kind of thing. The game isn't for those people.

Incentive to play and incentive to experiment with all the characters.

I dislike having everything unlocked from the get go. MK8 Deluxe wasn't enjoyable single player because there was hardly anything to unlock.

ITT: People are less excited to play the video game because they'll have to play the video game

It's cool for people who mainly play offline/single player.

But I agree it sucks for multiplayer. I invite 7 people to play local MP, or online, and I haven't unlocked all the characters yet. That's no good.

It's fun and lets you play as characters you probably wouldn't have given a chance.

Because it's a great free way of adding ~content~ and lets you hone your skills

Does it add content? Really? The single player content is still there, it's not gone. Does it change that much if you have to beat Classic Mode to unlock Captain Falcon instead of having Captain Falcon from the start?

Honestly if you need that Dopamine hit of clearing checkboxes and progressing, I'd much prefer it if it was Alternate Colours and Skins you can unlock. Those that just want to kick start the game and play with your friends straight away should be able to, and not have to wait until Billy unlocks everyone in single player first before we can have a proper gaming session.

My funnest times in Smash was always unlocking the characters when I was younger. The sirens accompanied with "Challenger Approaching" were super hype. Don't see a problem with it, especially now that all the stages are there from the start.

It's different now in the connected age, but I remember how confused and excited I was as a kid to unlock some sword guy named Marth back in Melee. Or when Mewtwo just showed up out of nowhere. Surprises that I didn't even know existed.

So long as the unlocks are all reasonable, it can still be fun to unlock characters you know exist. I also feel like, in a game as packed as Ulimate is looking, it's a way to ease in players who may otherwise be massively overwhelmed on day one.

I've always thought that unlocking characters was pretty fun. I can understand wanting everything right out of the box though.

I undestand why some people hate it, but for me gives a reason to play more of the game, like trying to buy everything from Street Fighter V only with FM
