culture wars were worse in the past.

the Church was more heavily involved, women accused of witchcraft, Rock-n-Roll was the devil's music and shit.

it's just that today it's all over the internet

As long as one group tries to take rights away from others.... No.

Women
Lgbtq
Minorities

Still being constantly attacked
This. As part of an intersection of marginalized groups, I'd love for culture wars to end. But people are still trying to deny my right to equality and deny my humanity and I won't take that lying down.

As long as rich people can use the media to turn poor people against each other there will be culture war

In the grand scheme of things, culture wars in general are at their most tepid levels in modern history. Back in the day culture wars quickly evolved into actual-for-reals sanctioned violence.

Burning witches, lynching, etc.

Not to excuse the current administration for fanning those flames for political gain but let's not exaggerate how things are in comparison to our recent past.

Take a break from social media and especially Era, if it's too much for you.

Culture Wars have basically been around forever, and aren't going away.

If only we had a huge looming threat against the planet.
Something the entire world can rally behind, big enough so that we forget our individual differences and work together as a single race, united, to save this fragile marble we call home.

Wait, we already have one of these going on right now, but nobody at the top really cares.
Maybe when Global Warming actually starts eradicating populations by the millions we'll finally unite to step up and solve things.

I do agree that America needs some sort of unifier in politics right now.

The gulf between sides has widened significantly, and the current POTUS actively makes things worse.

I just hope that the next person appeals more to everyone and actually wants to heal divisions.

It's sad to see.
Obama wanted to heal divisions and the GOP clowned him for years.

The internet firehose is not healthy for anyone, I feel. If you aren't stepping away from it you are slowly poisoning yourself. Humans were not really meant to consume things like Twitter, it's far more than we can deal with.

Things will settle down when the right stops trying to turn America into a white ethnostate. We can't actually "have discussions" with people who've made it clear they're only in politics as a power grab to fuck minorities over. Once they get the shit kicked out of them and start coming to the table in good faith, then we can talk about what is the best way to deal with the minimum wage.

I'm just getting exhausted, so do you think it will die down or is this the new normal of our society and atleast internet culture. The worse point is this is starting to creep in my real life. Arguments happening between classmates, friends and family.

I'm just sick of it all, people have no empathy

Well, if we assume it will follow the playbook of the 1930's it won't die down. Not until we've had a war that is. Assuming the good guys win then it will die down... but it won't die. People will just keep quiet about it to avoid being aggressively shamed (or beaten to a pulp) by the masses of people who lost someone in the war.

Then a couple of decades when we've gotten used to polite society without hate speach, the fascist movements will slowly start up again. Not with "KILL the X!" slogans but semi-polite "I rather think these foreign boys are somewhat a strain on our society, don't you agree?". The hardcore racists will flock to them although they are much too light to their tastes but still it's much better than the liberal "traitors" which are destroying "our way of life". And slowly but steadily the fascist-light movement - which no one gave much thought to stopping as it was a far cry from the bad oldtime fascists - will turn into regular fascism until suddenly they are in power again.

And then it's time for another war.

Do we learn from history? Some people do. Intelligent people do. Sadly the masses are dumb as door knobs.

Culture Wars have always been a thing and have always been this intense, if not moreso then. Only difference now is that there are no longer any safe spaces to bury your head in the sand imo. No more retreating to sports, comics, video games, etc which is a very good thing in my opinion.

The media sensationalizes politics so much that now people basically use it as entertainment, as in they spend way too much time on it with the excuse of "staying informed". Add to that the fact that we're being algorithmically pushed into our own echo chambers and you get the current situation.
Well said.

Yeah, even under Bush or Reagan.it wasn't this bad imo.

But it's much deeper than the president.

Left and right need to stretch a hand out and sit down and try to debate. Labelling is another thing that needs to go, to the left you're a nazi if they don't like your opinion, to right you're a marxist if you don't agree with them. It's sad how far we've fallen.

If dialogue does not return we will head to a potential bloody, violent confrontation like we've seen in history.

Weaponized tribalism will never end. It's just that the Internet now makes it easy to see it happen in real time.

Take some breaks, it's really bad but it's not going to get better.

Culture Wars will never end, especially now with things like social media where you can find whatever echo chamber that tinkles your fancy. It's hard to have a discussion when everyone, left and right included, are so dead set on the all or nothing approach that they are unwilling to listen and perhaps compromise on some issues. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying you have to compromise with a white supremacist, we just have to realize that saying something like "we need to do something about illegal immigration" or saying "Trump continues to act like an unprofessional idiot to the world" does not make someone an alt-right or extreme leftist nutjob. Sadly, in today's climate that likely won't change anytime soon.

I agree with you. After years of being active in leftist and antifa circles, I've just become exhausted by the "us vs. them" mentality that is developing and is basically demanding everyone fall in line on every issue. At first I was happy for the mass "wokening" that is happening, but it's clear real discussions aren't really happening, it's a full scale war and everyone must serve on one side or the other :\

It's obviously the alt-rights fault, as they've weaponized the internet in a scale that is frightening, but it's very very exhausting.
I agree with mostly this but I don't think you can but the blame solely on them. The 24/7 news cycle and the media profiting from outrage has played its part as well

Sometimes I think when people make statements like this, they don't realize that the US has had periods of far greater civil unrest than we are seeing now and likely will see in the future. During the 60's and 70's there were hundreds of radical groups doing all sorts of things (kidnappings, bombings, murders, riots, etc.) in order to make political statements.

I'm burnt out by it all, alt right, Conservative constantly causing harassment, faux outrage, false free speech issues. Purity tests on what side you are on. People complaining about politics in everything.

It does seem to be more in your face these days. I just try to ignore most of it now, as it's just a lot of people arguing and no real conversation, so unless it affects me directly, I have little interest in most of that stuff on the net.
