IGN just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about gaming journalism (I'm an expert), but honor and shame are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on GameSpot where you can become successful by firing plagiarizers. If someone plagiarizes on IGN, they bring shame to themselves, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance and hiring the plagiarized full-time.

What this means is the gaming public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to read any IGN articles, nor will they listen to any of their podcasts. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but IGN has alienated an entire market with this move.

IGN, publicly apologize and hire Broomstick Gaming full-time or you can kiss your business goodbye.
Man, the way that you are coment on plagiarism using plagiarism is too meta for me to handle...

Yikes. I feel bad for the guy but honestly this is the outcome that should happen. Plagiarism, especially in journalism is pretty fucking bad.

Clearly he has very little background in journalism/writing. Someone a few posts up posted his LinkedIn and he was a communications major. He probably had very little schooling in the seriousness of plagiarism unfortunately.
What? No, that's a terrible excuse. From the time that we're kids writing essays, teachers hammered it into our brains NEVER to plagiarize. There's no excuse for this at all.

So he's done this before? This dude's career is over as a journalist.

Wow...Like what.

How do you do this twice?

FIFA was on his own channel. (Didn't get caught)

Dead Cells was on IGNs. (Got caught)

Also it's possible unless a candidate isn't caught for plagiarism during the hiring process. The hiring manager won't go out looking for it which is how he got the NVC/Nintendo editor gig

As an occasional NVC listener, this isn't totally shocking to me. I always found Filip somewhat stilted and it felt like he was "performing" the podcast. He never seemed comfortable. This is total armchair psychology, but I feel like his plagiarism has more to do with a lack of confidence in his writing than trying to take a shortcut. Whatever his reasons, it's obviously not okay, but I think maybe this is why some people are feeling sympathy for him.

Damn didn't even refer to him by name in the statement. IGN going the full

treatment.
I think it's less of a "let's disrespect him by not even mentioning him by name" and more of a "let's not name drop him so he doesn't get harassed by a ton of people who want to dance on his figurative grave."

Not that it will stop people from giving him grief since his name is already out there. But IGN isn't going to be a part of that.

User Banned (2 Weeks): Ignoring mod-post to vilify outlet + Off-topic derailing. Long history of infractions.
Hopefully now we can get back to some good, honest reviewing.

I'm sorry, but that's an absurd proposition.
There are already hundreds of video reviews for Dead Cells on youtube, nevermind the few sites that do their own hosting.
Also, the game has been in Early Access for about a year, so that's even more video content to sift through.

Whew. Imagine having to screen every submission from every creator for every game. This is gonna be really bad for IGN. They already have a vocal group of people claiming they get paid for reviews. Now, all of their content will be under suspicion. I'd be pissed if I worked there.

You can't really believe this is a reasonable expectation, can you?
Well yes. As I said it's a colossal undertaking, but it doesn't mean it's impossible. Finding the list of Dead Cells review is actually quite easy, simply hire a freelancer for $5 on Fiverr or something. However, screening them one by one should be quite monumental. For this case, checking the first minute of every review should be enough, it'll take some time but it's possible. I've just learned that this is Filip's first video review for IGN. I think a more thorough QC should've been applied before publishing.

That sounds like quite a task, but tbh that's something that my company would do every time we hire a new content creator.

Indeed. I not wished for him to be fired, but of course plagiarism is a serious problem for everythink with payed job.
Yeah I don't think anyone wants his life to go to complete shit and for him to never find succsss or hapienes again. I hope he learns a lesson and figures things out. But obviously IGN had to move on from him. Plagiarism is basically the worst thing a writer can do.

Man, can't help but wonder what the hell he was thinking.

He must have been under some serious pressure like a deer in the headlights to try this.

Pulling something like this in this day and age is crazy when its easier than ever to get caught. Must have been desperate.

Turning in a bad review or none at all would have been a better option than throwing this blackmark on his career.

Obviously the other IGN staff aren't to blame however as a company they have a responsibility to make amends to Broomstick Gaming.

This is goddamn hilarious. You pretend that you care so much about the dude getting wronged, you can't even be bothered to spell his handle correctly.

Trying to get famous by acting all noble while riding on the controversy, eh? Hahah.

Where is Flip from, and is his background focused in writing? I think some of this has to do with the US having a poor education system, especially when it comes to writing.

From what I remember, growing up it was awful until I got into college. There were a lot of terrible writing assignments consisting of a forced topic that was difficult to work with unless you had an opinion or passion about the subject matter. The only other style was research based, involving pulling information from other sources and citing them. This conditioning probably results in disasters like this, where someone has trouble articulating strong opinions on things and when asked to express them in writing, resorts to...this, possibly not even knowing that plagerizim is not simply just copy pasting word for word.

What's with people feeling bad for the dude who stole another person's work?

It was entirely his fault.

For me personally, I watched him on youtube and was happy for him when he got his dream job. When he took over NVC there was a group of commenters who had it in for him from day one and I felt really sorry for him. It's very difficult to fill Jose's shoes, but it just felt like people didn't like him because he was a youtuber and young. Since then he has settled in and got more comfortable with the team. Then this happens. It's just the ultimate fuck up.

This is a huge reach and borderline character( if he still has any) assassination. The fifa analysis isn't anything new nor is it something that has been only identified by nintendo life. Sometimes internet detectives can be a curse.

No. That's plagiarism. He's presenting the same ideas in the same order from the source he is copying. Simply changing some words and altering the sentence structure a bit doesn't make the ideas his own.

Schreirer posted more in the twitter thread where the same thing happens. Again, the same ideas in the same order.

Most major degrees requires at least two collegiate English classes. I'm pretty sure he was taught the seriousness.
Yeah I was just thinking this. My degrees are in Exercise Science and Business Administration with a focus on Human Resource Management, and both my schools constantly reinforced how serious plagiarism and that even the suspicion of it could lead to being expelled. It seems to me that the degree in question is irrelevant; if you have one, then you know how to avoid plagiarizing, as if you didn't you wouldn't have graduated.

He's still a human and makes mistakes like the rest of us. He's also a parent and has a kid to look after.

I'm not condoning what he did wrong, he deserves to be punished and IGN did the right thing, he totally 100% put himself in this situation. In saying that I feel sorry for him as he's just majorly screwed himself over by taking the short cut instead of reaching out for help and not taking on more than he could handle.

While an open offer for a job is insane, it would be a very sweet gesture to use Boomstick's video review as the official IGN one, perhaps with an extra layer of polish in the edit or something.

I feel for the staff at IGN. Must've been a rough day and they haven't done anything wrong. The executive editor of reviews mentioned the site's reached out to the original reviewer, which is a great gesture.

This post hits the nail right on the head. I liked him on NVC but always felt that he came off as rehearsed. But your "performing" the podcast line is the much better descriptor. He was wrong and IGN did the right thing in letting him go because what he did was completely unacceptable. What I'm having a hard time with is the amount of schadenfreude and even glee that some folks on here have shown for this man losing his job.

He was wrong yes, he needed to be let go yes, but this doesn't make me happy. This outcome doesn't make me salivate at the mouth, this isn't a "victory" for me. It sucks that a young man with a family has shot his career half way to hell and in turn it has also set back IGN's reputation for years to come. Let me make one thing clear to some of you, they're no winners here.

I can't imagine anyone in the world thinking Halo 4 is a 9.8, not even 343 themselves.
It's your lucky day, cuz you don't need to imagine it. You can just read the opinions of the person who did the unimaginable. And your mind might be actually blown when you see Destructoid, Joystiq, Machnima, and others awarded the game perfect scores.
