Does Switch pwrformance seem... dodgy to anyone else? It feels like Im losing inputs. Only tried Docked so far, haven't done handheld.

Should've read more posts . Guess Im not alone in this. Welp, back to PC!

I've only played undocked so far and i can tell you that the performance in that mode is definitely not ideal too. I don't mind minor dips, but in this case it affects the inputs, as you mentioned. Some times i'm done hitting the buttons and my character is still finishing the moves.

I posted a thread in the Steam forums, bringing up a few unanswered threads from last year, but is anyone here having control issues with the analog stick? I'm using an Xbox One controller on PC, and nearly 100% of the time, if I flick the left direction, the character will end up facing right. I'm not sure if it's a dead-zone issue or a bug in the game. Maybe the dev can implement manual dead-zone settings.

Just want to gauge how widespread this may be. Thanks.

Gameplay-wise, is there a single title that you guys think this compares to closest?

Looks like SOTN style combat, but that's just from a few brief videos I saw.

Played on Switch until I had only 5% battery left. Really great game so far. But I think you can barely even call it a Metroidvania-like game. And I think performance is not optimal on Switch in Stilt Village. Didn't feel fluid at all but also not unplayable. Made it to the Clock Tower with my 4th character and had to put it in sleep mode. Will continue tomorrow. Glad I picked it up. Wasn't sure if I like it and now I can barely stop playing.

Have you tried messing with Steam's default controller settings? Try switching it around, esp if it's on "generic" - a lot of games are looking for x input so switch to Xbox.

I'd also suggest you take a look at Slay the Spire. The gameplay is not remotely the same (it's a card-based combat game with roguelike progression) but it seems to scratch the same itch as Dead Cells for me.

Haven't done enough runs to get a good idea of how most of them should go or "feel" so far, but I think I got really lucky on my third run ever? Got a yellow/gold quality sword off an enemy in one of the first rooms of the run and was able to cruise pretty quickly all the way to
The Clock Room boss.
It was pretty much one-shotting normal enemies until I hit that area. It kind of felt broken, haha.

Like I said, haven't really done many runs yet so maybe that's a super common occurrence?

Legendariea outside of boss drops aren't too common, no. Definitely fun when it happens.

I'm not usually into metroidvanias at all, but this game is damn good right from the start.

Glad I checked ERA before buying the Switch version. Guess I'll stick with it on PC.

What's with this green thing that you can tickle?

The framerate on handheld mode on Switch seems to get worse the longer you go into an area, until the moment the game seems like it is "jumping" several frames ahead of the current action and everything goes "ok" again. I don't think the game is hitting the 60fps at any moment on handheld mode... but it needs to be fixed asap, because it is really rough at the moment and not smooth at all.

By any chance are you suspending the game and resuming it from sleep?

Played a bit of this today. I usually do not like rogue likes but the fast paced gameplay makes it really fun.

It's a shame many people who will probably not find the framerate that bad will probably skip on the game on Switch from reading this thread. It's really not that bad, the dips are rare, and once the dip is over it's back to normal. I'd argue such performance issues being a dealbreaker is far from the norm.

I guess sometimes I did, but I can't say if that happened to me just after suspending it or before that.

Anyway, I don't think is some kind of bug. The overall performance should be improved a lot, and every area gets worse framerate wise the more you explore into it. I got into areas with only two enemies around me and the game was dropping frames very clearly (I would say under the 30 for sure).

Edit: I usually don't have problems with the framerate, I don't mind it in Enter the Gungeon, were some bosses or heavy action can trigger some dips. But here is different, and its annoying because its not like there are 12 enemies on screen shooting at you and the actions gets slow... here you can have frame pacing issues just walking through the map with no enemies around. And for me, is being really annoying and affecting my experience a lot.

I've seen cases before like this where some people will say the framerate in a third party game is fine, but others will say it's not good. I've found in the past that using suspend/resume is a possible explanation for the differences people see. It's very easy for that mode to not be implemented correctly, resulting in a memory leak where the longer you play, or the longer the game is suspended, the worse performance gets.

I would ask that anyone who is having issues with framerate to consider this possiblity, and see how the game feels when being played from a completely fresh boot up.

I will pay attention to this in my next try.

I would love to test it on docked mode, but I don't have access to my dock for a few days. I am curious to know if this happens only in handheld mode or is as bad in docked mode too.

If the performance drops are agnostic of what enemies you encounter, that sounds like a memory leak to me. Is this game running on a custom engine or is it Unity?

OMG I didn't know that! Thanks a lot, that changes everything :)

(opening Steam right now)

cheers, have fun, the game is really good!

Hmmm......do these problems seem easily patched or something that Switch users will just need to live with? I'd mainly pick up the Switch version for portable mode, so if it is leading to dodgy performance and input lag, that is really an intolerable thing considering Dead Cells is an unforgiving Roguelite where every move counts.....

all i can say is that i rebought Enter the Gungeon for Switch and changed to PS4 after 30minutes playtime on Switch, never touched it again...sorry to say it but some games are really dodgy on Switch handheld mode...too dodgy for my taste, especially hard games that require split second reactions...Dead Cells is the same

some consider ETG on Switch "good enough", i am not one of those people...i need my hard games on good performance so i chose PS4 and so far i am pleased with Dead Cells on PS4

Well, from my taste in games (which is that I haven't typically enjoyed Rogue-likes in the past) I'd be willing to give it a try for $15, based on the great reviews.

That's a fair reason for you, of course, but you have to recognize that a company's business model can't be built on whether you like the type of game they are producing.

How are people playing this on the Switch? I thought that it was releasing today, but now my order shows that it isn't coming out until the 21st.

Put about 3 hours into it today and holy fuck is this game good. From the progression to the way it controls, everything feels great. It wasn't even on my radar this month, but I'm glad I gave it a shot.

Feck, I pre-ordered on Switch but haven't booted it up yet, and now y'all are giving me anxiety over the performance.

I want to enjoy this game after all of the glowing reviews, but now I feel compelled to wait for a performance patch.

No worries. It's not buttery smooth, but Dead Cells is plenty playable on Switch.

What do I have to do to get the item at the very beginning of the Toxic Sewers? The one in the toxic pit before you arrive at the point where you can spend your cells. The very beginning. There is no way to escape that toxic pool. I have died twice already and lost my precious cells in the process. I don't want to die a third time.

Freeze grenades and traps are good to hold him in place, get some ranged shots off on him. You can get a few melee hits in, but can't stay in front of him for long. After the first part of the fight, he starts going into a pattern of ground fire and then leaping towards you. Jump the fire, and immediately roll under him while he's in air. Then you can get some shots in, either melee or ranged, whatever you feel comfortable doing. If you stay patient, you can keep with this pattern for the rest of the fight. The main struggle is just how long/how much HP he has.

I'll second this. I posted about the performance being iffy and then continued to enjoy it for 3 more hours after. Especially if you've already bought it, go ahead and give it a whirl at least and decide for yourself.

Man I get people want smooth performance but after playing the switch version handheld for a fews leave me addicted and wanting to play more performance dips and all

It's really not as bad to cause alarm in either purchasing or playing.

Good suggestion. Unfortunately no matter what I tweak or how wide I set the deadzone in Steam controller settings, the weird behavior is still there.

man with the throwing knife subweapon i have Shinobi flashbacks .-) this game has a little bit Castlevania, a little bit Shinobi and Chakan.

and somehow it reminds me a little bit of Amiga 500 games back in the days, music reminds me also of music of an Amiga game. while i still don´t think the soundtrack fits the game good, it grows on me. the ingredients for this game really good...the more i play the more i like it

So I just started a run, and at the very start there's an impossible jump to get to the next area. No other way to go.

Is there anyway to start a new run without dying?

Have you tried double-jumping or grabbing the ledge?
Yeah, the way it is positioned is not possible. There was a little "lip" lower than the main platform to make it so you can jump up to it. But once there, the lip made it so you can't jump up again through the required floor. Really weird.

I found "restart" in options though, so no biggie.
