I see. I never beat that game really, I was super interested going in but I could never work out a gameplan that wasnt sniping people and then pushing out so my battles end up being super slow. It also didnt help that there were like 3 or 4 cutscenes before a battle, at one point i just skipped a few of them and the game loaded a cutscene with the cast on a cementery, I was like "the fuck, who died and when?". I dropped it shortly after, maybe i should try again, I definitely mostly ignore the orders so maybe thats why i didnt do as good as i could
Yeah, if you play tactical ignoring the strangeness of the game you probably aren't gonna have much fun.
My suggestion for vanilla VC1 is to always try to abuse scouts, they can do pretty much everything by themselves and are the most mobile troops (if you want the best rank you have to go fast).
Deploy the other troops depending on the need of the mission (well, you are going to have Rosie and Largo for CP so you are always pretty much covered, and snipers at the start of the game are a bit underpowered, you can safely skip them in most of new game and abuse Marina's ultimate accuracy in new game plus), save every couple of turns and when you're in trouble use orders, the defensive one are OP and some of the offensive one let you destroy a tank with shocktroopers or even scouts.
But, anyway, if you don't enjoy anime tropes I don't think you will really love the series since it's really really anime in that regard (and VC4 seems to take it a step further).
