I would say 99% of users do not/did not know this, that's actually kinda disgusting. The public's knowledge of this forum's origins begins and ends with Ex-GAF mods disappearing to a private Discord, alledgedly due to Evillore's antics, to cobble together a new forum/site with tape and shoestring. The reality sounds like that was more an excuse for interested and enterprising parties to wrest control of his fortune.

so you deny the reason for the mass exodus and claim that people here are in it for the money.

yeah , i don't think you belong here.

that boomstick channel doubled his subs since the controversy, i think he'll be alright financially.

From about 11,000 to 20,000 overnight. It still doesn't justify the alleged plagiarism nor is the channel deliberately trying to capitalize on the issue.

Fake edit: I just now see that Boomstick uploaded a video an hour ago asking people to support him on Patreon.

Forgive my ignorance, as I know nothing on digital content really, but moving forward, how would a place like IGN screen content from their employees for plagiarism? It seems like it would be a colossal undertaking.
For written content, there are various tools you can use to detect plagiarism. But as I said, detecting video plagiarism is much harder.

In this case, IGN should've checked every Dead Cells reviews video posted online to make sure that there won't be plagiarism. Yeah, it's a colossal undertaking.

im not excusing the plagiarism, it was more in response to the "he should be compensated"

he already has been as a natural consequence of these events

It's public info, not shady. You're free to leave if you wanna go post conspiracies

They're minimizing the discussion, needlessly so. What are we going to do, burn down the whole IGN HQ with our thread? We're going on 30 pages...we know plagiarism is wrong, and can only say so for so many pages before the topic gets stale. People would like to have a higher, more productive conversation stemming from these incidents but they're constantly being fought on it.

Then go to Reddit. This is intended to be a more professional discussion board.

And don't even bother with "topic is boring, let's post conspiracies."

I mean come on... this is so obvious and stupid. Why would you copy a small youtubers video especially in a world of social media where you can get caught very QUICKLY over doing something dumb? He should've had it coming.. right?

Yet you, someone I assume to be a reasonable adult, is using the word conspiracy to discredit people you disagree with. Irony.

*Not defending the upper half of your quoted post either. I could really give a damn who runs this place and why.

This couldn't have happened to a more deserving game.
I guess this is one of those cases were "any press is good press" or however the saying goes.

Fair enough. Compensation is a difficult thing to decide. At one point, you can see that his channel has gotten enormous attention and will gain newfound support because of it. On the other hand, to a degree, original work was stolen, and a penance ought to be paid. But judging from what I see from Bommstick's character, a heartfelt apology would suffice.

Gonna quote one important word from The Verge:
On July 24th, YouTube channel Boomstick Gaming uploaded a four-minute overview of Dead Cells, a roguelite that it praised for its unique marriage of combat and exploration. With 16,000 followers, Boomstick Gaming is a small channel that averages under 5,000 views per video. IGN, on the other hand, is the biggest gaming website on the internet, and its YouTube channel has around 10 million subscribers.
If nothing could be done to help him about, I don't see why he can promove this channel.

You don't nuke your career on purpose.

He tried to exploit a smaller youtuber and unfortunately for him, the youtuber saw that and decided to fire back.

Saying that blatant theft and lack of ethics and professionalism in journalism is not a big deal is 100% defending it.

The fact that that poster has little else on his post history than constantly shitting on people discussing literally anything he doesn't want discussed doesn't help either tbh
Thats utter bullshit, he posts in footyera a lot and he's a good guy

I hope this doesn't end just end up with firing Filip, a one-paragraph apology and moving on. Everyone knows that games journalism doesn't pay much, and it's a tough job, now imagine how it is for journalists in small outlets or very small youtubers.

Hopefully, this produces a big enough discussion to force outlets like IGN and other big ones to change their policies and practices, not just in policing plagiarism but in crediting smaller guys. Example:

I'm sorry, but that's an absurd proposition.
There are already hundreds of video reviews for Dead Cells on youtube, nevermind the few sites that do their own hosting.
Also, the game has been in Early Access for about a year, so that's even more video content to sift through.

Whew. Imagine having to screen every submission from every creator for every game. This is gonna be really bad for IGN. They already have a vocal group of people claiming they get paid for reviews. Now, all of their content will be under suspicion. I'd be pissed if I worked there.

You'd be surprised. A colleague of mine had a student literally copy and paste a New York Times article as an essay in a freshman comp course. It was immediately obvious.

Desperation? Maybe he got to a point where the script wasn't finished or wasn't good enough and the deadline was near. Since it appears he is somewhat a new employee, he decided it was his only choice? I dunno, but I'm sure we will soon see an apology letter from him and IGN, with some explanation to why it happened.

OT: Also, love the name and avatar.

I'm so confused, this thread seems very different than yesterday. Did something change? I feel like it grew triple the size as well.

The reality was Evilore was caught up in his antics, was found out, didn't put out a statement, mods totally left, users left, and instead of letting the community go their seperate ways a few people decided to build a new community and hopefully learn from past mistakes.

Honestly, I'm so tired of conspiracy theories. You wanna talk about disgusting? It's disgusting how people need to assume there is a hidden motive behind everything.

Not really sure how he comes back from this feel bad for his son if he does get the axe. If he does get fired bring back Matt Casamassina to be the face of IGN Nintendo once again.

One thing is for sure: Both the original Youtube reviewer and the game itself are getting a ton of exposure with this situation so at least that's a positive thing from all of this. It helps the fact the game is also really good.
I hadn't even heard of the game until this and now I'm seriously considering buying.

Yep, this is exactly what I've been saying. Someone taking a dream job for thousands and treating it with zero respect or dignity.
If that guy was actually in the running, then him calling the other guy like that is also pretty damn unprofessional. I mean, it's clearly not as bad as plagiarism, but to be all "Look at this asshole who got the job I wanted!" isn't a good look.

I hope Jim Sterling tackles this one, plagiarism is one of the big no-nos in journalism.

I'm actually this happened for 2 reasons:

- I have discovered Boomstick Gaming. Been checking some of his videos today and quite enjoyed all of them. I subbed to his channel.

- i knew Dead Cells was coming out but wasn't really interested in the game. Hadn't seen a single video of the gameplay until I saw the video posted on the OP. I own it now.

That's what I was thinking. Seems pitiful. There's no way IGN would've known something like this happens with Filip.

Watched a video the YT critic made on his review and one of IGN. There's no denying it and I can't imagine how he thought he could get away with it despite copying word for word and changing very little. Like, why?

Finally getting around to watching this. That's...really blatant.

Also how the hell have I been sleeping on Dead Cells, this game sounds right up my alley.
