This thread is BRAZY! Are people seriously expecting someone's life to be destroyed over making a mistake in a VIDEOGAME review? This is his first review, it's natural that he'd make a misstep in it as all beginners do. I hope IGN don't listen to the pitchfork mafia and do the responsible thing which is simply giving him a warning and helping him with his future reviews.

Plagiarism is an area where firing a writer is a completely valid, rational response. This isn't a "pitchfork mafia" situation because of a "mistake."

I'm in a position in which a team of people report to me..

Ive been involved (unfortunately) in countless HR investigations and terminations.

Literally the first thing in the decision tree you need to work out is "was this a decision" or did the person involved make a mistake?

I certainly wouldn't be calling for blood right off the bat but if FM intentionally plagiarised another article then his position at IGN is untenable and he should be let go.

This 100%. I haven't followed IGN for a good few years so I don't know anything about the guy in question but if it was intentional he has to go. Unless there was a press release given to reviewers that we haven't seen and they both worked off that (which is still poor work) I can't think of a way it wasn't.

Most definitely plagiarism and he'll get his just deserts.

I remember when I was in college we had a 30 page paper and one of my partners literally sent me 2 pages of material straight from an online website. Turned her ass in and kicked her out of the group.

So after watching the comparison video a lot of the examples provided are pretty weak, but a few of them are pretty damning. To me it looks like this is either straight up plagiarism of the YouTube video or copying the press release. Even if it is just copying the press release it's still not ok and the IGN reviewer should be reprimanded because that's lazy work (not to start a "lazy reviewers" bit). I suppose the only thing that would come of that is it also makes the YouTuber look bad for also being lazy and then making a fakse claim that IGN plagiarised his review.

But if they didn't both just copy a press release then to me this looks like IGN copied the YouTuber. While a few of the examples are weak, there are some that are very strong and hard to excuse.

Great case of how media manipulation is working
Everyone wins
The small channel huge bump (revenue)
Ign gets an amazing amount of coverage yeah it's negative from a vocal minority big deal they dominate video traffic for advertisers by showing how much it's talked about online
You all now know Fillip now let the apology tour begin it's a huge deal for him to be the culprit he will get destroyed then forgiven within a set time
Oh guess who how else benefits
Gaming press
Podcasts
Dead cells huge press for them hell they might get picked up outside games media for mainstream content like fortnite does
They can't buy this attention only someone like rockstar games does this right
Finally the gaming message boards
Congratulations your outrage is exactly what they seek
So spread the story it's what they truly want
Everyone will be very dissapointed but still they all will profit except the outrage

You must think you are incredibly smart, eh. I envy you.

Hahahaha I think this is a collateral reaction from what happened, I don't think is some press conspiracy tactic.

My snarky take away sure

What the IGN reviewer did was terrible and he should lose his job over it. My point was more that this hasn't blown up nearly as much outside of resetera in places I'd expect to see a thread condemning it. We've seen far less get far more people upset and one has to wonder why that is.
It's amazing how people still spin anything to fit their own personal narratives.

He's not for me when it comes to that podcast. I miss Jose. I stopped listening a few weeks after Filip joined because he didn't feel genuine to me. He very well could be -- I don't know him. Just my experience. Still love Peer.

the problem is that Jose was an amazing host that knew how to keep things moving along. Hell, he was the host during some of the worst times to cover Nintendo and he did it in a way that didn't come off as whining about Nintendo every week. I'm glad he got the gig at Nintendo, but I selfishly wish he didn't just because I really enjoyed all of his content when he was in the press.

The guy will almost certainly lose his job over this. Deservedly so. But as often with these situations thanks to social media etc, people tend to go overboard. Looking at this guys twitter, stuff on Reddit and on this forum it is now a shit storm of abuse (some pretty nasty over the top stuff too). You really would have to worry about his mental health. I am not sure if I could handle it if I were in his shoes. Losing his job is bad enough but having to deal with hundreds of comments screaming for his head. No thanks

It's the story of a guy plagiarizing a review.
And he'll be fired for it.

Nothing more.
Certainly not "win win" for him.

One thing you have to learn if you do anything in the games industry... Grow a thick skin. Very quickly.

All you people saying no big deal must have been students in my wife's English class. I have never seen such blatant shit going down than in her class. Two people turned in the same paper, word for word, and they tried to play it off like it was a coincidence that they just happened to write the same paper.

Lol, christ.

User Banned (3 Days): Posting conspiracy theories, vilifying an entire media outlet.
I don't think he should lose his job cause I'm not gonna sit here and pretend IGN is actually some type of place with integrity. They've been doing paid reviews since forever.

Edit - Ok, so obviously I crossed way over the line here. I'm in no position to be challenging anybody's integrity. I don't really believe what I wrote nor do I even particularly dislike IGN or anyone working there. On the contrary, I think their podcasts are quite good and they have some really talented personalities. You can see that in quite a few of them getting even biger opportunities elsewhere.
I never intended to vilify anybody but I suppose words can be more powerful and malicious when I don't think before I speak.

Already verified the "press release" possibility, not likely:
The press kit is publically available

http://motion-twin.com/presskit/81

Reads nothing like these reviews.
Plus, the structure is downright identical (no hyperbole). The wording itself cannot claim to be unrelated if you look at the transcript in the video's description.
Well here's him streaming the game for 2 hours, so he's definitely played it

They even pulled his stream from last night, dude is super fired.

No backup I suppose?..

Anyone working in any sort of journalistic medium should be well aware of the risk you take when you plagiarize. I can't sympathize with this guy at all.

Pretty much. People are always talking shit about games journalism and for once they have an actual reason to be upset so they're gonna go in on this until he's let go, unfortunately people can't make a fair criticism and then call it a day.

Why do people care that much, honestly?

Watching that video, definitely some similar wordings, and the one with the identical time stamp is a yikes.

That said, they both barely seem like reviews. More like a reading of bullet points about the game, instead of any unique insight into what they liked/disliked about the game. The kind of info you literally could have gotten from anywhere, including as others have pointed out, from the game's press releases.
