Just got back from seeing this wonderful film.

It captures what its like to be in middle school damn near perfectly. Obviously, when most of us were there, cell phones and snapchat and all that jazz didn't exist, but if anything, this movie proves that as much things do change, things stay exactly the fucking same.

It's awkward, funny, scary, uncomfortable, and endearing all at once. Its in limited release, but holy hell if its playing anywhere near you, go see it.

It's currently at 98% on rotten tomatoes, and for damned good reason.

It's written and directed by Bo Burnham, who is a musical comedian - although none of that is present in this film - and started his career on the internet. He had a short lived TV show on MTV called Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous, which was also pretty amazing.

Anyway, the film is amazing, and there's one particular scene that I both groaned and laughed at simultaneously, and it involves Chicken McNuggets.

SEE IT.

Definitely want to give this a watch and I love Bo. But the last school related movie I watched I found so overrated (Lady Bird).

Not a fan of Burnham's comedy material at all but this movie was great. Can't stop talking about it.

I don't want to re-visit 8th grade. This season's Atlanta episode already brought back the trauma of how awful kids are at that age.

I remember when Bo Burnham had that youtube Stand-Up special. Really enjoyed it for not just how funny but creative and relatable (in a weird way)it was. Sounds like this movie is in keeping with that.

I was afraid 8th Grade would be too awkward for me to handle, but it was so beautifully made that it honestly feels like a privilege to have seen a movie so raw and true and full of empathy for the teenage experience.

The casting is flat out perfect. The writing is spot-on, and I have to wonder how much of it was improvised because the scenes are so natural. Bo Burnham is insightful as hell. Awesome artist.

See this, it's worth it.

Lady Bird wasn't good. Another Juno in my book.

8th grade doesn't have that "I'm such a special witty hipster" bullshit they are plagued with. It's fairly grounded with characters. Kids actually respond and act like kids, not 24 year olds at a dive bar.

Is there any sexual scenes? As a father to a 10 year old son, im not looking forward to dealing with this.

full scene spoilers
There is some minor blowjob talk. The girl grabs a banana to practice but stops just short of actually doing anything sexual with it. Another scene a boy tries to pressure her into being physical with him "take off your shirt" but she refuses. It's incredibly uncomfortable because you feel the pressure being put on her in the moment. But there is no actual sexual actions depicted on screen in the whole movie. Edit: There's also some talk about sending nude photos but it's more or less just in passing.

this movie is scarily accurate. Truth or Dare is probably the most tense scene I've seen in theaters this year

Saw this with a full crowd for a screening this past Monday.

What an amazing movie. Captures the true feeling of utter awkwardness without falling prey to cliche.

Love that scene at the party where she sings karaoke and obviously impresses the other kids. But they don't actually let us hear her sing just see their reactions with a different soundtrack.

Beautiful movie but man a few scenes were amazingly uncomfortable

Awesome movie and achingly realistic. The actors looked like real average teens and the writing was uncomfortable as it was relatable. Definite must see, and easily one of the best coming of age teen movies I've ever seen

It's crazy how I used to watch Bo Burnhams stupid YouTube videos years ago and now he's this big. Props to him. The film looks good too, but I think I'll connect more with Jonah Hills Mid90s more.

It's genuinely one of the most terrifying scenes I've ever scene. Scarier than many horror movies I've seen.

Movie is phenomenal. Elsie Fischer gave the best performance of the year so far, IMO.

come on, bro, bo is a legitimately great musician. i'm excited to see this.

the first time i heard this, I knew he had potential to capture certain feelings really well. this captured a middle, high school, college and driftless 20 year old angst well.

Saw the movie with my wife last night. It's amazing and it captures the feeling so well. So many, "oh shit, yeah... I remember that" moments even though it's a new generation. Things change but stay the same

Fantastic movie. It went way darker than I expected in one scene but it felt right nonetheless. Really funny and endearing too. It doesn't gloss over the awkwardness and uncertainty you feel as a teenager, and sometimes adult, and drives home the import of staying true to yourself. Great stuff

Yeah that scene was awful. Sick to my stomach with the tension of the scene.

Very poignant film. It does a fantastic job of making you feel the emotions and anxieties that go through a teenager's head.

A lot of other films feel cheap after seeing this one. So many films create tension and emotional turmoil by increasing the external stakes (i.e., the literal world is at stake, or X character is about to die.). Eighth Grade just does it by using the medium to make you empathize with the characer.

This is a good point. The film does a great job of putting you in her shoes.

I think credit should go to Burnam for lots of this (or his DP). The lead actress is hardly ever out of frame and so much of the film is tight shots of just her reaction to things. It really facilitates getting you into the head space of the character

Also shout out to the mean girls cousin. Kid was hilarious

Yeah exactly, he's using classic film techniques to communicate all this shit and it all feels really well thought out. I'm surprised this is Burnam's first major film because it seems so polished and confident.

And yeah that Nathan kid was awesome. So fun to watch and stole every scene he was in.

I'd like to watch this but it isn't playing nearby yet. Just watched Bo's 2016 Netflix special and it was all kinds of hilarious. He also had a great cameo on Parks n Rec.

Beautiful movie. Very accurate portrait of adolescence. The anxiety, fear, depression. All too real. I'd say it's equally as good as that Atlanta flashback episode. The performance of the lead in this, Jesus. So good. That is about as pitch perfect performance for an eighth grader as there will ever be. Really felt for her the whole movie. Her videos being cut into her living her life and sometimes doing the opposite of the advice she gave was heartbreaking. That back of the car scene. I wanted to look away so bad, just completely horrifying. Really liked the dad too. He really gave a great believable performance.

Special shout out to the music whenever her crush came on screen. Had me rolling each time lmao.

Almost cried. Almost.

Loved the movie though. So relatable. I swear I know the girl that invited her to the mall. I KNOW that girl from HS.
