He was filler in a spinoff like 10 years ago. But mainline, nope. DK64 was his last game and his own series has moved on.
I really dislike the k rool design, the eyes always make me uncomfortable, I hope he doesn't get in tbh
He was in King of Swing and Jungle Climber on GBA and DS.
Also why would you be asking why people want the main villain of the DK franchise?

Ehhhh Dixie would most likey be an echo fighter of Diddy Kong with her hair differentiating some moves. K.Rool would definitely have a more unique moveset. Relevance isn't really a factor in Smash Bros either, and Sakurai added his head as a mii costume. 0_o
Main villain of the dkc trilogy, 64, and the dk land games. Plus in a bunch of spinoffs. Is very unique, a fun design, costumes, etc. Is another heavy which is needed, and another villain.
If he makes it in I won't mind, just not rooting for him as I don't see him being as iconic or relevant as the core DK crew. His last spinoff appearance was 11 years ago and the two mainline game since have made no attempt to remind us of his existence. Being a fighter is a pretty big deal in Smash and I don't think he has that pedigree anymore. As a trophy or Mii Costume, sure.

The DKC games are also re-released constantly. All 3 were ported to the GBA back in 2003-2005, they were all on the Wii Virtual Console, then the Wii-U Virtual Console, the DKC1 is on the SNES classic.
Even if K. Rool hasn't been in a new game in years, he's always been around for new fans.

Also we have some hope because he was the only DK character to receive a dlc mii costume in 4(in fact it's the only non character/stage related to the donkey Kong country series in all of smash 4)
I think for many fans, he is still a core part of the DK crew. That's partly why he's the most requested DK character by far, one of the most requested characters period among fan communities. One of Nintendo's strengths is the power of its catalogue and the memories people have attached to it.
Sort of like how many fans considered Dixie a core DK character even though Dixie was put in the vault before K. Rool in 1996. She was removed from DK64, DKJB, and DKCR. Thankfully she's back now! Hopefully K. Rool follows soon!!!!

That's true. Similarly. I'm sure there are teenagers and adults and children who didn't recognize or wouldn't recognize Shulk, Palutena, Ridley, Rex, Ashley, because even though most of these characters have new games, not everyone plays the same games or is in tune with the same stuff. I think, as we have seen historically, characters can appeal to different groups of people and that's fine.
Interestingly, teenagers who grew up on DKC Returns wouldn't necessarily know Dixie either. She was gone from that game like K. Rool, too! I still think she deserves the spot. I think she deserved it even when she was stuck all the way back in 1996, celebrating the signing of the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty.
Wouldn't these new kids go back and play the old games? It's not like they exist in a bubble.
Can be said for a lot of od characters. Main stream popularity isn't the only factor, imo.

There's also been plenty of rereleases of the original DKC games, from the GBA to the SNES classic.
Kid Icarus Uprising was in 2012. Getting old but still way more recent then anything Rool was in.
Fire Emblem Heroes is a thing and arguably the most profitable game in the series and that has everyone from Smash in it.

Valid points but with pretty much every Smash addition you can look back at a recent game and find that character (Smash 4 had Shulk who has Xenoblade + Xenoblade 3D - Smash Ultimate has Ridley who appeared in Samus Returns - Smash 4 also had Palutena who appeared in Kid Icarus Uprising). I think the exception to this is classic additions like ROB and Duck Hunt but they're iconic remnants of their time. Pit (Brawl) may be one of the few exceptions here as I wouldn't have called Kid Icarus an iconic landmark of the NES and his series was all but dead at the time.
Something to consider, in smash 4 including DLC DK as a series only got 2 new gameplay related items(trophies don't count since they are model rips), one new stage(based off dkcr) and the K.Rool costume(made from scratch based off his original design instead of reusing the paon style trophy ), so yeah we have a bit of hope (Although the state of DKC in smash is kinda sad)
