Would you guys say this is better or just as good as Axiom Verge in its Metroidvania-ness?

How about Rogue Legacy?
I think Rogue Legacy is one of the more sensible comparisons and I also think Dead Cells outclasses RL in every possible way.

DC is a combination of RL plus an item pool that is kind of like Binding of Isaac and Enter the Gungeon.

Are there any significant framerate drops on the Switch version?

I continue to be surprised by people comparing this to Metroid. I hope people aren't disappointed when they play it. It's an awesome game, but it isn't particularly similar to Metroid.

I finally "beat" the game last night after 40 or so hours. Does anyone know if the final release is going to add much to the current PC version? I'll probably continue to poke at it here and there, but I'm wondering if there's going to be a bunch more stuff for me to do.

*edit: just looked at the previous page and people were already addressing my question.

So this got me back in the mood to play the game, which I haven't touched in several months.

Had a fantastic run earlier and got farther than I'd ever been. Was a little surprised with the changes since I last played, but they weren't anything major and I liked them overall. Funny how I almost went a completely different direction with this run but decided to stick with it. The Wolf Trap and Double Crossb-o-Matic are such life savers, especially against bosses. Fought the second boss for the first time and won easily thanks to them, particularly the latter.

I have to say I'm hyped like a MF for this on switch. Taking all my power not to buy that PS4 deluxe physical edition too... must stay strong.

I haven't even came close to even seeing the HotK on the PC version but I've been not playing too much over the last year or so in anticipation of the full release. Such satisfying gameplay. Bring on Tuesday!

Bought the game based on impressions posted in this thread and it's great! I don't usually play games with rogue elements but this one had good balance of randomness and upgrades I can keep. Additional bonus - you can find it's Steam key for ~12 euros :)

Super looking forward to this. I pre-orderd it on Switch which I normally never do. Does it unlock at midnight when you do that?

I am away from home this week for work stuck in a shitty hotel. Brought my switch and have it pre-ordered. Hoping it unlocks at a reasonable time on the 7th & I can get the switch on this shitty guest WiFi to unlock it!

Preordered on Switch. LOVED Rogue Legacy so hoping this scratches a similar itch.

When does this unlock? I've never preordered on Switch before. Same as PSN?

I'm really torn - I bought this on sale on Steam in November, waiting for it to come out of Early Access, but then the Switch version was announced and it seems like the game is a really good fit for that system. Do I double dip?

Afaik you need a shield to party, and doing so stuns enemies and gives some buffs depending on your shield. But it's not necessary. You can use melee weapons, ranged weapons, grenades and traps.

You do need to know how to dodge, though.
Dodging I can handle, as long as the enemies telegraph their moves even a little bit. The video I was citing showed a player performing parries in rapid fire, which led me to be unsure if it was an action or a buff of some piece of equipment.

It seems like a lot of people love the game. Almost all of the reviews for it are glowing. I'm just worried about throwing down $20 only to find I don't like it.

Actually really hyped for it, despite hating roguelikes, as I love progress. Seeing this has some permanent system, I think I will do fine tho. Played Moonlighter and Chasm as well (the former being a great little time waster and the latter being kinda uninspired mediocrity).

I stopped playing about a year ago, did they ever fix performance on intel graphics i.e. is it now playable on a GPD Win?

After playing 50+ hours of binding of Isaac on various platforms, it still annoys me how opaque everything is, and how I need to reference a wiki just to find out what every pickup does.

It's one of the reasons why I really like Enter the Gungeon a few hours in.

Which side does Dead Cells lean toward? More obfuscation or clarity in what pickups do?

It's all very laid out. I don't think you know what a weapon or upgrade does until you unlock it, but after that, the item's description is very straightforward.

Started this game up this morning. Next thing I know, I've been playing for six hours. I don't usually enjoy roguelites, but damn this game is a masterpiece. Each run you feel like you're making progress, and it's so quick to get back into a run that I just kept playing.

All of my thoughts are still pretty raw, so I can't formulate a well thought out opinion right now. But, I will say if you like metroidvavia games, and are still on the fence about this game, just buy it. It's so good.

Does anyone play on a 4k tv via steam big picture? I have the problem that in the pause menu "reset" and "quit" are offscreen :/ is it the windows scaling?
I don't think this has anything to do with resolution, scaling, or Big Picture Mode. A bug was introduced with the last update that breaks the pause menu when you use pixelated fonts. It's pretty annoying.

Ok so you start the beginning of a level over after death, or the whole game? If it's the latter what keeps you from losing your mind? Dark Souls and Hollow Knight have Fires and Benched respectively. I know this isn't the same type of game, I'm just seeing if it's for me.

The whole game starts over, and the permanent upgrades keep you coming back.

I feel like the difficulty spike starts at the first boss.

I haven't seen challenge rooms in a long time. Did they ditch those?

I don't know if they used to be different, but there are still challenge areas. Find a rune on the ground, use it to open a portal. Chest at the start, then a bunch of traps on the way out.

Maybe I've forgotten how they work? I know they added the floor runes that you can bust through with some item, are the challenge roo s also floor runes?

Yeah. Wall runes will have gold or items. Floor runes (small ones) are challenge rooms. The challenge rooms were changed in that you get the reward first, and then have to get out without dying, whereas before, you had to flawless the room to get the reward. There is also some places that you can bust through, but those are bigger and more apparent.

Also, for those that have played on Switch (specifically in handheld mode) does it do proper pixel scaling? That really shits me on Gungeon, I hope it's not the same for Dead Cells.

I just spent ~30 hours with Hollow Knight over the last few weeks. How difficult is Dead Cells by comparison?

If you were to compare just the boss battles I would say Hollow Knight has some harder encounters, and a few that felt a bit unfair (for me anyway). Dead Cells is made to be replayed again and again and again so the boss battles never seem impossible, but still have phases and patterns that need to be learned, and will probably trip everyone up the first time they see them.

Just wait til you're locked in a room with an elite one later on. Good lord.

They are super vulnerable to stun/freeze type stuff, but yeah they are really brutal if you don't have enough of that.
That's actually what prompted that ;__;

Was having such a good run... Should've just turned around and walked away from the big spooky spikes room, but nooooo.

Errybody's vulnerable to stun/freeze stuff, but they're just so damn fast for how huge their attack range is. I kind of prefer wolf traps to try and deal with them since those keep them locked in a facing.

This game is SO good! Can't wait to finally be able to play it on console. I'll have the Signature Edition for PS4, I already have it on Steam, and I'll be buying it on Xbox as well. This game is just THAT good to me. So pumped that it's coming out tomorrow night! Well, for me it is, lol. :p

yeah I tested it further and scaling has nothing to do with it.I don't even use pixelated font. Funny thing: in a non maximized window the menu works fine.
