Nintendo needs to put a limit on how often games going on sale. I'm tired of stuff like plague road going on sale every other week.

Yeah, there is currently a trend in these treads about saying to people what they should do or not to do with their money.

The customers are not stupid, and anybody reading these threads is a well informed person, knowing the schedule of releases and having a vast knowledge of the track record of every company.

It's legit if I say that for a determinate game, it's not my priority, I will wait for a sale. Of if I'm disappointed of seeing a game with an higher price respect to Steam.

But then, I don't need to say to every person interested in this game, every time that they state their interest in the game, that they are making a mistake buying the game or supporting the developer.

I'm waiting for a sale in 'Cave Story+', but I don't need to be a douchebag replying to every person talking about one of the finest platforming games, about how they have paid so much money for the game.

The truth in the case of a game like 'Tintan Quest', is that there is a hardcore fanbase interested in games with the layout of 'Diablo'.

There is no other game playing like 'Diablo' in Switch. 'Tintan Quest' is the only available game, period.

Taking into account that in a game like this, an enthusiast of the genre can easily put 200 hours, I don't need to say him that he is making a bad investment. Or linking to him articles with negative press about the game, because this person is an enthusiast of the genre, and he has probably read about his anticipated games much more than me.

Every time that a game linked to a physical edition is released, and all people know that this will affect to the price of the digital editions with a few exceptions... these threads are infused with toxicity.

People become extremely critic about every aspect of these games, probably because they are pissed by the price of the game.

We saw this with 'Runner3', with a lot of complaints weirdly coming from aspects that were already in the second entry, like the backtracking, but you know, nobody was so extremely critic with the same aspects in 'Runner2'.

With 'Titan Quest' I have seen this campaign, trying to reply to every user buying or interested in the game. And do you know why? This person doesn't need your wisdom, and he doesn't need someone trying to manage his finances.

Let's stop saying to people what the hell they should do or not do with their money.

It's fine if you are no interested in a game because of the price, but you don't need to reply to every user expressing his interest in the game.

Because in this way, we will create a toxic environment, in which the good and nice people will run away from these threads.

And only the toxic people will remain.

And you know why? If for example, tomorrow a new patch for 'Titan Quest' is released improving the size of the fonts on the screen, Eurogamer will not make a new article talking about this patch. But the fellow user in these threads who bought the game with his money, he will probably inform you about this new patch.

In the same way, there is an unfortunate trend of people expressing opinions or trying to recommend games to other people, without having played the games.

Seriously, all the people in these threads are well informed people, reading reviews, news in the press.

When someone is asking about how is a game, he wants to hear direct feedback about the game, coming from someone who have actually played the game, because he is probably interested in this genre. And he wants to know the opinion of an enthusiast of the genre, having played similar games in the genre. Something that is not always truth in reviews in the press. A lot of times, these are informative articles, written without knowledge of niche or obscure genres.

It has no sense to link to him a review of the game, saying that the game is "awful", because he has already read this review.

And people come to these threads looking for direct feedback of the games.

Not to find people trying to have an opinion about every subject without having actually played the games. And not to be judged about what he is doing with his hard earned money.

I did note that Runner 3 got a good deal of negativity from fans of Runner 2, almost in a way to help sink the game, which is weird. I was genuinely sad when that game came out, and really you were one of the few fairly vocal people, to my memory, in this thread that really felt compelled by it. Hell, even the dedicated thread died off after awhile. I just didn't understand the complete distancing from the community on that title, based on small shifts from the second title, and really ignoring the massive leaps forward that the third brought. My excitement was so high for that game, and I didn't feel this place really was keen on that flow of energy.

This feels similar with Titan Quest. And it felt similarly for PayDay 2. For me, the funny thing is I wasn't really into Celeste ahead of time, and really didn't love the adoration, sans any criticism of the game, that I felt existed in most places. All the while, the energy people had regarding it, I used to help me further along to complete the game, and focus in my mind as much on it's glowing strengths, as much as I was it's tone that I didn't enjoy thoroughly.

That's the great dynamic possible in threads like this, where a game can become a community activity almost, and you surge forward along with the community and savor the excitiment as the group pushes forward in unity.

That is also a similar dynamic where I feel games can be judged sometimes unfairly, for biased reasons from people not playing them at all, yet alone thoroughly, and that can quell energy as well.

Ultimately I want people to play games, be happy, and share that joy. When I see Epilexia talk enthusiastically about something like Don't Die Mr. Robot, or this new game Cycle 28, I have faith in his, and other users as well, attitude towards games to push me forward to consider a purchase. Even if I don't end up seeing what he sees, I still often can find constructive conversation within criticism or trying to grasp what he might be perceiving, and I might not, or see differently. That's a great energy to generate, but the energy where negativity and viewpoints without direct firsthand accounts, often have me feeling my energy towards a game diminish, rather than crest. And I try to be aware of that for other users too, in the sense of if I see a wave of positivity, I'll temper my criticism to degrees, all the while still trying to express positives I see about that specific title.

How is Titan Quest performance on Switch? Things like:

-Framerate
-Stutter/tearing
-load times

I'm ok with the graphics and controls and if it's solid on the points I mentioned I will pick it up.

Oh, and does it include Immortal Throne expansion? That added a LOT to the game!

Framerate seems really solid, I'd guess stable at 30. Enemies on another plane, farther away, can look choppy from afar.

No screen tearing from what I've seen so far. Load times are incredibly quick, and from a cold boot to loading a game, I'd say around a minute or two.

I've heard it includes Immortal Throne, as I think the Xbox and PS4 version do.

I have the game but haven't had the time to play it yet, but according to Nintendo Life "The original Immortal Throne expansion (which introduced the 'Dream' Mastery and other tweaks) is integrated here, although the Ragnarök expansion is missing. It's apparently still coming to consoles – certain exclusive items and the Runes Mastery are currently visible, though inaccessible."

Any opinions on the Jackbox games?
They are awesome for people who have a good grasp of English and US culture, no other language options sadly. Big hit with my gaming group apart from 1 guy and a girl whose English is perfectly fine but who miss those little nuances. I prefer pack 2 but they are all worth their little money if you have a group of friends to play with.

Now Nintendo needs to limit sales... I can see where you are coming from though. But I think miniscule savings to get onto the list are the bigger offenders.

I'm in the third world of 'Slime-San', and I'm very happy of having given a second opportunity to the game, after abandoning a bit exhausted the last Summer.

The best thing that I can say about 'Slime-San' is that it's very Nintendo in its way of doing the things.

You know, the game it's clearly a love letter to an indie platformer tradition, there are things taken from 'Super Meat Boy', the Pico 8 version of 'Celeste', 'The Sun and Moon', or 'VVVVVVV'.

But it's not as punishing as any of these classics. And it looks instead to a Japanese balance and conception of video games.

It has this same way of teaching you how to play, and how the difficulty increases, similar to the greatest Nintendo classics.

But I think that a much more accurate comparison is the Sega platformers in the 16 bits era.

In the way that it's as imperfect, wild and creative as some of the Sega efforts in the genre.

Really getting 'Castle of Illusion' vibes, in how creative is, like any thing that you can imagine can happen in its world.

And its cast of characters is bananas, what a weird and charming world they have created. It feels very close to some of the the wildest indie experiments in the RPG genre, such as 'Hylics', 'Undertale', 'Baobabs Mausoleum' or 'Sluggish Morss: ɯnʇıuıɟuı p∀'.

From my friends, a lot of them abandoned the game after its first levels. It was something like, it's a cool game, but I have already played 'Super Meat Boy' which is better.

But I think that once you advance through its worlds, the game improves a lot.

And it shows its own distinctive flavor.

I can't think of any reason I would need this but for some reason I want it.

I was recommending Yodanji because it's closer to nethack

Oh god that keyboard....

If FFXIV ever came to Switch, I'd be set.

Wow! This is awesome, I was hoping we'd see it since it was made by DotEmu. I don't think we'll be getting the Code Mystics PS4/Vita ports of Garou, SamSho5S, The Last Blade 2, Metal Slug 3, etc.

Incidentally, the PS4/Vita version of Windjammers is currently on sale for a mere $1.50. It's cross-buy but not cross-play and the Vita version doesn't even let you create online lobbies. Still a good pair of ports otherwise, IMO and an insta-buy at $1.50.

Hoping the Switch version will have a more robust online community since it won't have a split user-base and it's the Switch. But even the PS4 version was pretty dead online. Even now with the sale it's a ghost town.

I'll double dip, regardless. This is one of the greatest local multiplayer games ever and it will work great in tabletop mode.

Cute trailer, btw.

I liked the first game when I played that on pc years ago. I'm not sure you can go wrong if you enjoy point-and-click adventures. Can't vouch for the quality of the port though. I bought the sequel yesterday, but haven't yet found the time to play it, because of La Mulana 2 and my love for self-inflicted pain and misery.

John Walker gave the pc version a hearty recommendation on Rock, Paper, Shotgun: https://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/10/01/wot-i-think-the-inner-world/

Thanks boss! It didn't occur to me it wasn't a new game to be honest, which is daft because I can see the sequel on the eShop too, I'll do some digging.

It looks great but I've seen no chat around it which makes me wary. Although I appreciate there are one or two other games out at the moment.

I'll post this here since I'm guessing this is the most popular Switch topic. Is anyone else bothered by horizontal scanlines on their Switch in portable mode? I can see them when there's movement on the screen, like a camera panning or just scrolling rapidly through the News grid. When the screen is still, you can't see them.
I'm quite bothered by this since I see it all the time when playing in handheld mode. I've compared it to a friend's Switch and it's noticeable there as well, albeit a little less intrusive.
I'm wondering if every Switch suffers from this, but it doesn't seem like a widespread issue. Maybe I'm just really sensitive to this though, I dunno.

I've never played a Metroidvanian(does Steamworld Dig count?) but all the hype for Hollow Knight has me curious. Is this a game with widespread appeal or is it something that just caters to fans of a specific genre?

SteamWorld Dig is not a Metroidvania in any way.

Hollow Knight has been widely lauded since it came out and simply is one of the finest execution of that original design formula that also incorporates concepts from recent trends (Souls-series) with a rare awareness of why the source material is so revered instead of just trying to ape things to tick a box. Also, Hollow Knight is tough. How about SteamWorld Dig 2, did you play that already? That is more Metroidvania than the first game and won't through you right into the deep end.

After trying out the PC version of Hand of Fate 2, I'm even more impressed with the Switch version. They did a great job porting it over, especially considering it uses Unity.

I recall people saying it was a metroidvania when it came out, so I bought it on the 3DS and... was very disappointed :(

Also, it's one of those widely praised games I just can't get into. I find it really boring.
Are you referring to Dig 1 or 2? 1 is not a metroidvania, and I also found a bit boring after while. 2 is more a metroidvania, and I personally did enjoy that game a lot.

Give a try to the second one, definitely it's an open world platformer in the vein of 'Metroid', very polished and charming, and a vast improvement over the first one.

'Etrian Odyssey' is one of my favorite series, and 'Steamworld Dig 2' was able to scratch the same itch in its first hours.

You know, the mechanic of digging is very close in spirit to a dungeon crawler: keep digging until you run out of resources (light), so you are forced to return to the surface, with the risk of losing the progress.

It has some minor flaws. At the end, you will create an over-powered character, and this dungeon crawler mechanic will lose importance. Because you will have an almost unlimited supply of light to explore.

And at the same time, it has the same problem of 'Axiom Verge' regarding the accumulative upgrades.

There are secrets that with intelligence and skill, can be obtained at the very beginning. And believe me, the game is fucking brilliant in its construction of an open world with hundred of small secrets.

But once you obtain all the upgrades in the final part of the game, you will have again the problem of an over-powered character that can reach any part of the map discovering every secret in an easy way, ruining the exploration part.

Plus it's a bit short, once you think that you have reached the middle part, the game will end. The extra-hard final secret dungeon is a mess in its level design, raising the difficulty from 1 to 100 becoming frustrating, through an accumulation of cheap design decisions. And the jump is a bit floaty, showing the European roots in its design in the worst way possible.

But even with all of these minor flaws, I had an absolute blast with the game.

It still resonates in my mind. It has this rare kind of magic in the construction of tis world and lore, that only a few titles are able to reach each generation, defining a system.

And I think that 'Steamworld Dig 2' will be remembered as one the most iconic games in the entire Switch library.

So glad i bought in to the Hollow Knight hype. This is seriously one of the best games on the Switch and everyone should play it imo. One of the best Metroidvania style games I've played. Everything just clicks; the combat, the platforming, the art style, the music, the world design.... Masterful.

No idea how far I'm through yet (in the crystal area atm) but can see this occupying my time for sometime, and then I'm on to Okami for the fourth time!

Re: Hollow Knight

I'm about 25 hours into the game and every single time I think I'm nearing the end game, a entirely new mechanic is introduced and I'm not sure if I hate that that happens or if I love it.

In the sense that you are ordering crew members around in real time it is. It's not a traditional top down RTS but it is indeed an RTS. It's also fucking great. One of my most played games recently. I was worried it would get too hard too quickly but the difficulty scales very nicely with unlocks and skills.

You control the crew of a one plane bomber squadron. You have indirect control of the plane through your crew members. You can't steer the plane but you can tell the pilot to fly towards custom placed waypoints once your navigation person learns the required skill. It's really fun.

This is a plus for me. The reason I haven't bought Hollow Knight yet is that I'm halfway through Xeno 2 and won't have the 30+ hours I'll need to beat it right now (I'm a slow gamer, I know it will take me at least 30 hours), so I might grab Dig 2 for now...

I would rather call the game a management sim before I'd called it a real-time strategy game (I also don't like it when people describe the Pikmin games as RTS). I don't really see where the strategy part comes in. From what I've seen of the game, you're more reacting to different problems on-the-fly than executing long-term strategies.

That's an interesting comparison... and I also love Etrian Odyssey, by the way.
It's also a slightly bizarre one. It's one of those that could lead you down the rabbit hole of comparing Super Metroid to Super Mario World in the same way EO is compared to SWD here as it merely describes a basic loop, not really the moment-to-moment interaction with the game which is so fundamentally different. In EO-style dungeon crawlers you carefully make your way through dungeons, grinding for experience points to be able to face dangerous monsters while in SWD you just dig your way through the earth at random gobbling up loot with the possibility of completely avoiding most combat scenarios and jumping all over the place with very high mobility (side note, the Dig games have the most amazing wall-jump ...it just feels so so so so good).

I'm only just past the tutorial, but it definitely has personality, great art, and is dirt cheap.

What were your thoughts Nate? I saw your video pop up about it the other day.
The game's humor is pretty good & I've been enjoying the gameplay. Controls aren't as refined as I'd like them to be, but the overall package is nice and it's a great pick up and play RTS.

Thanks for the impressions, and the video! I was definitely thrown off, and giggling a bit, at how far the humor went here and there. It did feel a bit clunky moving around troops, but I definitely need to put some more time into it. For the price it seemed very, very reasonable.

Dig 1. And yes, I want to give Dig 2 a try, I just have to play Hollow Knight first.

Hollow Knight went from a game I knew or cared nothing about, into my Top 10 Favorite Games of all Time. It's that good. Its easily the best Castlevania and Metroid game I've ever played, if you want to put them into that category. It's an 11/10 for me.

But you cant go wrong with Dig 2.

1. Hollow Knight
2. Shovel Knight
3. Steamworld Dig 2

... Those are my highest recommendations on the eShop

I gotta say, I still haven't felt the hook of Hollow Knight, I think 10-15 hours in....

The controls are exact. The power ups a few great, though initially slow to gain. The ambience and sound create a great atmosphere, but man oh man, does this game have no joy/spirit/connection to draw me in. I just don't care about this world, and I'm entirely fine with melancholy. The character feels like the blanket of templates, and I never feel a shift in tone, from drab dour aesthetic, to anything to balance that, even for an area or so.

This game plays so well, but I just have no urge, no drive or passion to engage it. And I have tried....

I was where you were in both how I felt about the game, and at around the same hour mark you're currently at and it wasn't until maybe hour 15 when everything just started to click and now 30 hours in I cant put it down.

All I gotta say is just take your time, explore and take in the world that's presented to you. It really is something special.

I had the total opposite feeling. I adored the world and design of Hollow Knight. I love everything about that game.

I was unsure for the first couple hours. The earliest areas are kind of simple and having to unlock map features is annoying (im still irritated that the compass takes up a charm notch) but I was in deep by the time I'd been the second boss.

Currently sitting at 67% completion, main campaign complete, 25 hour playtime. Waiting for the expansion before going for the rest. Playing other stuff so as not to burn out, but I had to force myself not to play for a couple days.

I would recommend Dig 2 before Hollow Knight just because it's so much easier and more chill, but then again maybe that's what you want after being put through the ringer in HK.

Certainly for the indie platforming genres. Celeste maybe at #4 for me, but I'm only 1/3 in so far.

If you want to add a roguelite to the list I'd put Flinthook at #5.

Top 5 Switch platforming games not made by Nintendo:

1. Hollow Knight
2. Shovel Knight
3. Steamworld Dig 2
4. Celeste
5. Flinthook

Those games are also different enough to be played back to back without getting burned out.

Edit: wait, does Inside count? That would be my #1. Super Meat Boy and Rayman Legends... those are pretty old and I don't think of them as Switch games but I guess I need to reconsider

Does anyone have any recommendations for rts or sim management type games in the vein as Kingdom New Lands?

For RTS type ganga, someone mentioned Element. I will add Masters of Anima (Pikmin), and Bad North (manage squads/heroes) Congress out this year.

Rollercoaster Tycoon Adventures is coming out this fall.

I haven't played any of these but will probably buy them all.
