Some real delusion going on here.

To put it into context, my grandparents who never watched or cared about Star Wars all know who Darth Vader is. What he looks like and how he sounds. There is relatively no one who doesn't know who Darth Vader.

My Mum and Dad will likely never know or remember who Thanos is. Even in terms of the more millenial/gen Z aged people my little brother will know Thanos because we watched the film but certainly not my older brother.

Also I kind of get annoyed at people calling Darth Vader a bad villain. Is that how it works now? We pretend something is bad to prop up the other thing we like at the moment?

Thanos is a terribly boring character from a terribly boring movie.

If you're going to try and argue the idea that the OP presents, you should probably do so without giving an opinion that is shared by an absolutely minuscule amount of people.

Saying Thanos is a "terribly boring character" and that Infinity War is a "terribly boring movie" is laughable to the point of being a troll.

Based on your metric, I'd grant that title to either Voldemort or The Joker, although the latter would be kind of cheating because of all the legacy stuff behind that character's iconography.

I would need to see more from Thanos outside of Internet memes.

He's a big deal but I don't see him being up there with Vader in the long run. I think Ledger's Joker is still the modern king. There will probably be more of them this halloween than Thanos.

I honestly can't tell if you actually believe something so ridiculous.
I can't even think of a memorable thing these films are known for now (that didn't already exist) so I don't see how they'll stand the test of time in the same way something like Star Wars did. The concept of a cinematic universe will probably be attributed to it but that's about it, they will be remembered a homogeneous blob of cinema instead of any outstanding individual element.

People keep bringing up older generations when the question is in regard to this generation. Kids will remember a villian set up for 10 years and delivering upon his arrival.

He's the biggest villain as of this moment. He had a huge build up spanning a decade of movies, which culminated in a movie where he won.

He may not be as big as Darth Vader was, or as memorable as Joker, or be the villain of a book series that molded a generation like Voldemort, but is there any other current movie villain that has the weight of Thanos?

The ending of Infinity War will be one of the most remembered and discussed moments from blockbuster cinema. Period. To deny that is just crazy.

People will also remember the first Iron Man movie, the New York battle from Avengers, the first Guardians film.

To claim that no one will remember anything about the movies themselves is undeniably wrong.

I have a hard time accepting OP's premise when the story of Infinity War was lifted almost verbatim from a 1991 comic limited series. Would you say that Thanos is the big comic villain of this generation?

Most of the MCU is a rethread of storylines from the comics. It's not without merit, of course, but I can't consider anything about it as ground-breaking as other movie characters. At least Vader is an original creation for the movies.

I can only really think of two CG characters that have had any significant impact on cinema and pop culture. One is seen as the first real believable fully fleshed out CG character ever put to screen and the other is still being ridiculed and mocked to this day.

Gollum and Jar Jar Binks?

That will depend on the next movie, he sure has potential to be. At this moment I'd say Ledger's Joker is more iconic.

Both of these statements are factually wrong.

MCU movies are inspired by the comics, and are absolutely not "lifted verbatim" from them.

For one, Thanos' motivation in IW is completely different from the Infinity Gauntlet.

I mean, it's my opinion. I saw the movie and wanted to leave by the end of the first hour. Nothing about it grabbed me.

He would be a lot more menacing if I didn't think of this every time I see him.

Lol @ every "people don't even know who Thanos is" posts. Infinity War made over $2b my dudes. Are we gonna pretend that no one knows who Rey or Kylo Ren is too?

And I think most people's perception of Vader as a villain come from TESB and RotJ, not ANH. He was barely a character in ANH.
By this standard everyone should know who the villain in Avatar is and Billy Zane should be one of the most iconic villains of all time

Also he was barely in ANH? He's in the opening scene and a like the main antagonist the entire movie

But you dont see the issue with posters bringing up the whole "it made billions of dollars" reason that is going apparently make Thanos a memorable villain.

Uh...

Dude, context.

The MCU is 20 films, Infinity War is the beginning of the End game of this era of this franchise.

So yes, it making 2 Billion dollars while also being the 19th film of the series means that this movie is going to be remembered for a long time. Doubly so if Avengers 4 tops it off nicely.

Vader is probably the most iconic movie villain of all time, spanning multiple generations with relevance still today.

Thanos is another villain, albeit a decent one, in a crazily overrated movie series. In 15 years he will all but he forgotten and Vader will no.

So the answer is no, not even close.
