MB made a good video going over all the changes made to the long-running series with its current iteration, and how it impacted the show positively and negatively.

If you are curious to see what the series is up to right now, this might be the best summary.

I'm not sure I have it in me to really watch a Pokemon show in 2018, but I absolutely love the new art style, it's kind of crazy how much better this show looks these days.

Catching up to this has been one of the highlights of my year. It's an incredibly fun show and by far the most enjoyable show among those that don't take breaks.

It's kind of of funny to see the contrast between the people that were interested in the new style and the weirdos that have been tuning into the Japanese broadcasts since D/P.

It's a shame Alola isn't going to get an actual movie. Although I guess Slice of Life wouldn't translate into a film super will.

Would be a lot more interesting though than them doing Mewtwo Strikes Back again though.

Some people are still bitter over Ash choking in X/Y. So I can understand if people are skeptical about the new season.

This is the funniest season so far. I love every character. They have so much personalities and character developments. Kukui is like a father Satoshi never had. See him living happily in Melemele island put a smile on my face. he should consider living there.

His weird mustache is so confusing if he's still supposed to be ten and forget everything he learned each series.

He's had those squiggles on his face from day 1, though.

Don't watch the dub, it's horrible and the music is all changed.

SM is still a mixed bag otherwise, depends if you like slice of life. I prefer the XY anime more, and the older arcs like DP and parts of Hoenn are better too.

DP began in 2006, over 12 years ago. Most of the fanbase were still young or in their teens or early 20's back then. Most of the original fanbase dropped off around the BW era, besides those who stopped during Johto before that.

Nah there are still those /vp/ hardcores that stuck around past BW and made it to their Shounen XY paradise that now hate S/M

You really do. SM is by far the best the anime has been since Indigo League. It's charming, emotional, funny, well-written and different.

Well that's only because they should have wrapped Ash up with XY.

If the SM saga had the S/M boy protagonist instead with the new cast, it would have been better off. Ash's story should have ended by the latest with XY, or even DP before that.

One guy on the anime news network podcast was saying this too.

I believe it, but it's still a little hard to find the motivation to watch a pokemon anime.

I saw every ep religiously up to the end of DP, even all of Johto fillers and all of AG. I watched parts of BW but lost interest when the Team Plasma/TR arc was canceled, then BW started to get progressively worse as it continued. XY seemed like it was picking up where DP left off, where Ash was more mature and experienced, and since the writers unfortunately built up to Ash winning a league only to bait and switch, along with the shipping bait with Serena, it killed off the last goodwill of the fans who stuck with that time.

But overall it doesn't matter, new kids come into watching pokemon every year and old fans are expected to outgrow it.

I'm still waiting this get into Netflix México. It's in Netflix Spain, but our dubs and catalogue are different. I wonder if the latam dub still some kind of charm.

Pokemon not having gyms and going straight for an arc to arc with slice of life in between structure is the one thing nobody expected it needed. And it works flawlessly. The best part are the actual Pokemon, they are much more expressive and have character outside the battles. Poipole is easily the best introduction to the cast.

Outside of the OS, most of the groups pokemon do have personality in all the other sagas. It's really only most of Misty/Brock's pokemon, with the obvious exception of Psyduck/Croagunk, that had virtually no personality. The bulk of Misty and Brock's pokemon always had nothing that resembled a personality and that's why in Kanto/Johto especially their pokemon barely even did anything.

It got me watching the series again for the first time since I was a kid, and I adore it. Hopefully they keep the same approach for the next gen.

They probably won't. It hadn't been received too well by fans and the SM anime has the lowest ratings of the franchise in Japan. They already changed Ash's design in Movie 21, so I imagine Ash will get revamped again come Gen 8 and they'll go back to a more traditional travel saga.

A lot of people also have problems with the characters, Lillie and Lusamine's entire arc was toned down and handled poorly from the games when all they had to do was adapt it. The lack of battles and the girls only having 1 pokemon each and barely doing anything in most eps obviously doesn't help. My guess is this was a short stopgap saga and things will change again next arc.

I'm currently watching it in the U.K. on the Pokemon website for free, they have all the dubbed Sun and Moon episodes shown so far, I'm not sure if it's available in Canada but definitely give it a try:

https://www.pokemon.com/us/pokemon-episodes/

If that doesn't work the first part of the series is on Netflix in some countries, again not sure if Canada has it but check that as well

It just bugs me that they keep reusing Ash instead of just following the game formula and making each season standalone with different protagonists.

You could do more character development with them and the Pokemon League wouldn't be guaranteed failure.

The animation did look a lot more fluid in the clips I've seen. Then I saw this scene on Twitter and was shocked by how funny it was.

It felt a lot more like a show where the animators/crew were having fun as opposed to doing a by-the-numbers Pokemon series. It would be a shame if they retreated back into the safer style for the next series.

They've said before that Ash and Pikachu are Mickey Mouse to them.

Fucking finally...I've been watching this since Day 2 and it never seems to get any love.

I know I'm...biased, but it's super enjoyable. My only issue so far is I think the pure battle episodes are pretty choppy for the most part (bar Vs Misty and Brock) but thankfully that's not the focus.

Also Rotom Dex is low-key the best character followed by Sophocoles.

Another touch I really like is all the cast have family members we get to meet which is nice. Technically all of Ash's previous companions have family members we've seen bar Tracey (lol), but they go a bit further here.

I am. It's not very good. Pokemon spent such a long time becoming a legitimately GOOD shounen show that culminated with XY&Z, only to strip all that way for a worse art-style and a sometimes-decently-animated Saturday morning cartoon formula. It's so boring and lacks any of the sense of adventure and wonder that makes Pokemon great.

I've liked the episodes I've seen, but ever since Johto, I've just watched season highlights and then the league. Still bitter about the XY conclusion. 20 fucking years.

I still enjoy Indigo League for how mean spirited it was.

Truth. XY gets horribly overrated because it had some flashy animation and came the closest to fulfilling the power fantasy people wanted out of the anime but in reality it's probably one of the blandest runs of the show.
I liked the stuff I saw, but you realize this followed you Unova, right?

It was okay. Let me explain:

It had a few episodes with amazing battle-choreography/animation, as well as final batch of episodes that had a great climax.

However, getting there was long and tedious. XY(Z) still has a lot of episodes that can be downright skipped and even more if you don't care about the romance subplot.

I appreciate the Shonen route they were trying to take, but I also feel like they completely exhausted what they could do in that regard with that season.

With Sun and Moon OLM is trying to have the quality of the occasional good non-battle episode as standard.
The focus on the world of Pokémon is something I appreciate even more, because the world of Pokémon is legitimately interesting.
