I remember we had a semi-active hunting thread at NeoGAF, so I thought I might put something up here.

I'm heading out for a quick trip this coming weekend with my brother to chase a few wild pigs. We haven't been out since January this year, so we are both itching to go.

Feral pig numbers have been growing quite large here in Australia recently, so the hunting has been good.

Anyone else heading out soon or been out recently?

One of the guys we took last time missed two large boars which both would have been 100kg+. He had taken his brand new Rigby .30/06 too. He was upset to say the least.

Here's one I got about 18 months ago. Decent young boar, about 60kg or so I think.

With a camera, sure. I hunt animals with my camera. Trying to get the perfect shot. Pretty non-lethal.

I know a guy who wants to shoot a rhino and a giraffe, having a particular interest in how the giraffe will collapse when shot.
Fucking psycho.

But i'm aware that hunting is needed in some areas. And the meat of wild animals is fantastic. I just don't like pleasure-hunting. Why would you want to kill another living being for fun?

Most of my family hunt, I don't I just eat the meat they give me, it's delicious.

I don't know if there are enough hunters on ERA to keep an OT alive?

I like to take my camera out too. Some great opportunities for wildlife shots where we go.

In a best case scenario you'll get 95% anger and insults, maybe 5% actual hunting chat.

And that's if we count fishing as hunting.

Most people on here shit their pants at the mere thought of guns. I doubt this thread will get much attention that isn't negative.

No doubt. Like i said, love to "hunt" animals for that reason. It's very exciting. Especially if you don't want to disturb them.

But most of us didn't grow up with hunting being a normal thing. So i'm guessing we see no fun in killing another animal.
But i know people who did grow up with hunting and it's such a normal thing for them. They feel weird for having to defend their way of life. But i guess for most people it's just weird to think of killing a living creature for no reason than personal gratification or a trophy dead animal on the wall. Why not shoot targets, clay pigeon, etc? Shooting things seems like a lot of fun to me. I do think there is something to say in hunting for your own food though. And ecological balance in certain areas is also important. In my country there needs to be a deer hunt every year because the population becomes too large.

It's not me, I'd enjoy a hunting thread. You asked how it'd go over in these parts, and got an honest answer. (It won't)
I really don't care about those who want to throw insults, so as I said, feel free to discuss any sort of fishing or hunting you're into if you want.

I thought it was worth giving it a go.

I'm assuming wild boar is edible? How did it taste/what did you make out of it?

I've started hunting last year with my dad and I'm probably renewing my license for this year as well. Though I'm only going for bird hunting(mostly ducks) since I've heard some horrific stories about boar hunting.

Yeah it is. It obviously tastes like pork, but can be much more gamey. There are some issues with brucellosis and other diseases so you need to be careful. Most of what we do is pest control for the farmers whose properties we go to.

Feral pigs are an invasive species in Australia and can be very destructive and spread many diseases. You can read more here https://www.business.qld.gov.au/ind...s/pests/invasive-animals/restricted/feral-pig

I don't hunt or fish. I was with you too on judging hunters in the past, but I am a meat eater and found it to be hypocritical. Hunters that eat their kills (or at least give the food away) I'm ok with.

To boil it down, the meat you eat go through hell in the farms anyway, and if society devolved to shit you'd be out there hunting boar and camp firing delicious pork.

Can we have thread where we chase boorish animal murderers through the streets? You know because it's fun and helps keep their numbers down.

You know there are plenty of species in multiple countries that are invasive and/or are over populated and need regular hunting seasons to prevent population explosions (if there aren't already ones with the invasive species)?

There are definitely some horror stories around, but I'd say most of them are caused by people doing things they maybe shouldn't.

Yeah boar hunting always seemed a risky game to me as well. Pretty sure a friend of my grandfather got killed that way. Bled out from his femoral artery that the tusk ruptured.

Certain invasive, non native species need to be culled. Even the deer population can get wildly out of control if not managed. Deal with these animals long enough and clearing them out becomes rewarding.

I don't really understand the appeal of safari trophy style hunting though, especially if you are shooting from a vehicle. That's just dumb. But still necessary at times.

I've been doing it since I was a boy. We eat plenty of the meat and are always respectful of the animals.

People kill flies and other insects all the time without thinking about it, they will happily exterminate rats and mice with cruel traps and poisons, and will eat farmed meat without a single thought about how that animal was raised and killed.

I don't get Safari hunting or most trophy hunting either. For me it's about meat or pest control.

Feral and introduced species are one of the primary reasons that Australia is the extinction capital of the world.

I have a bow I use for target practice sometimes, but the fitness level I'd need to go bow hunting is beyond me atm. I'd looove to hunt with a recurve bow, if I could pull, like, 100 lbs.

Bow hunting is something I've always wanted to try, but I really wouldn't like to be coming face to face with a big boar in the scrub with only a bow!
That's why you bring a spear, duh. But in all seriousness, I'd probably climb a tree when under threat or as Avitus suggested, shoot from a perch.

I love animals too much to support a hunting thread, but I try to be open-minded ... i guess.

That said, hopefully you are using all parts of the animals you kill for sport. =p
Otherwise, I'll hunt you.

True. I try not to be a hypocrite about it. But i guess the larger the animal, the more we empathize with it, or something like that.
For me personally, the only valid reasons to hunt are for food or for population control. But i didn't grow up in that culture so i try to wrap my head round the fun part, but i'm not able to yet.

I'd like to hunt for food at some point. And i'd like to go through the entire process from shooting to eating. So skinning, cleaning, etc, etc.
Not because i think i'll enjoy it but it will bring certain things in perspective i think. Especially the lazy ass way we get out food in the supermarket and never think about how it got there. Animals for these meat factories often live a way worse life.

I don't have a problem with hunting, as long as it is (partly) for food or to control a population.
Not big on the concept of bow hunting, from the videos I've seen, it seems like it can cause unnecessary pain you could avoid with something more powerful. But I may be wrong.
Trophy hunting (like shooting a lion, whether wild or raised to be hunted) is where I draw the line though. Fuck that.

An animal cleanly killed in the wild is better than something that probably spent its entire existence walking around in shit inside cramped confines until getting a bolt gun to the head.

Most of those rights are sold because the animal has been marked for culling by the people in charge of managing the herd. Most of the time it's for a very good reason.

I have no guilt about killing feral and introduced animals, simply because of the tremendous amount of damage they do to the native wildlife in Australia.

Read some of the following for more info
https://www.business.qld.gov.au/ind...ds-diseases/pests/invasive-animals/restricted

Basically, the reason so many native animals are going extinct in Australia is significantly down to introduced pest species. Cats and foxes alone are responsible for killing millions of small native animals every day.

Here is what I think I'd do if I were to kill a boar. I'd let it bleed out then fillet it and take most of the meat home in a cooler. I'd leave the rest in the woods where nature has much more efficient mechanisms of disposing of cadavers than we do.
Will you hunt me?

I can't wait for whitetail season. They're like the perfect game animal here: overpopulated, cunning, and delicious... no moral quandries here. Better to take one with a bullet and consume it than have the poor thing smash into a car with kids in it, too.

I usually hunt with a rifle but the few times I've bowhunted was great. I would like to buy a bow soon

I already stated that a good reason is fine with me, but I explicitly mentioned lions raised in captivity. It is very much a business, and I disapprove of it.
More importantly, trophy hunting as I know it is just pathetic. As you said, it's specific targets, all that. What's the point in shooting it? Just put it to sleep and send it to the person who paid rather than making it into a game you paid to win.

There are some areas with deer around here, but not that many. Mainly animals that have escaped from farming operations. My brother has bagged a few, but I've never cared much about chasing deer honestly. Seemed like too much work.

Share your stories and pics though.
