Not really. I don't think he's all that great a villain. I feel like I've not even really seen much of him, then again you could say the same for Vader. He's intimidating but almost approachable because he likes to pontificate. Vader is just like "join me and rule the galaxy". Thanos thinks too much to be truly terrifying.

Its kind of difficult to say what his cultural impact will be but I would say no. Its a well played character with strong visuals but he is still just bulky purple dude.

Vader had a voice kids could easily mimick and some unique powers.

Maybe because there's a lack of memorable villians in the other big budget popcorn movies, sure.

Depends with what they do with him in future films.
With just Infinity War to go on it's tough to say how iconic he'll still be years from now.
They should give him a solo film and do the death of Thanos storyline from last year. They could do that instead of Guardians 3, most of them are part of that story anyway.

Thanos is not even a fraction as iconic or ubiquitous as Darth Vader.
Maybe right now in very nerdy circles, but I struggle to point out anyone around me that would even know who or what Thanos even is.

Unlike Darth Vader, I don't personally think there is anything particularly iconic about Thanos' look or voice.

For cryin'...the movie has been out for all of 4 months, OP.

There's plenty of this generation left to go before you need to even start considering this question much less devoting a thread to it.

Do I need to ask what kind of discussion it generated when you posted this theory in the community Marvel thread?

I think is too soon to qualify it as that. Statuses like "one of the best" "the most Iconic" etc, does not pop up in "one snap".

It's not permeated popular consciousness like Vader did.

Maybe TDK Joker is this. A very post-9/11 sort of Vader.

Too soon to tell. For now, id say The Joker is for sure though, namely Hammil and Ledger's.

No Thanos is such a goofy looking motherfucker.

Also it's different than the 80s when EVERYONE would see the biggest films. I only know one person who has even seen the Thanos movie.

There's no point asking people here. Ask the kids who seen the movie when they are older.

Thanks will be remembered as their favourite villain from their childhood I care to bet.

If anything, this board will give a hugely over-inflated response to the impact of Thanos. Era is not representative of the real world.

Ledger's Joker is THE villain this generation and I don't think it's debatable. Brolin's Thanos wouldn't exist without him.

Not even close. C'mon let's be sensible here. If he has same impact 50 years on we'll talk. But even after a build up vs cold intro of Vader he's nowhere near as dominating the zeitgeist. He's just nowhere near as memorable or interesting or visually arresting.

WAY too soon to tell.

For me, personally, Ledger's Joker is the standout villain. 10 years after the movie's release and watching that movie will still blow me away.

I don't think we'll ever get another Darth Vader, regardless. Depending on A4, Thanos will be great in his on right.

I've edited the title OP

I think Thanos has definitely potential to be that for a lot of people. Marvel definitely feels like the "new Star Wars" after IW

Not even close.

Vader is an icon of icons among cinematic villains.

I think he's more popular than what many think. Saying "No one knows who Thanos is" is pretty ridiculous. But he hasn't, to this point, had the kind of mainstream presence that TDK Joker or even Bane had. He certainty isn't close to Vader's status.
