I think the voices in the earlier English videos may have sounded a little better than this new one, but I also know that voices always sound far worse when they are snipped out of context for a trailer like this, so I'm not too worried.

I also don't really care about name changes. Not actively defending the "decision" or whatever, it's really just a non-issue, personally.

Anyways I'm pretty excited for this.

I love that they kept the accents like in Dragon Quest 8 (I don't remember if 9 on the DS had voice acting or not, I don't believe it did...) Everyone is fairly talented and the characters (apart from the one ditzy older girl) are all enjoyable, especially the little girl who isn't the annoying kawaii pipsqueaks we see in a ton of JRPG's.

Agree, I'm v glad Veronica isn't squeaky.

Can't wait

The voice acting seems to be on par with DQH stuff. Gives them a little bit of personality.

Can't wait for this game. Hard to believe it is like a month!

I can't blame gamers for showing the same apathy towards DQ in the west that the game's own publisher shows, especially in the year 2018 where even the Yakuza team has gotten their shit together and is able to release their games worldwide in the same calendar year and match the level of commitment to the franchise in the west that their fans show it.

It's not just you. It's the worst possible release date for just about anyone with good taste in games.

That isn't on "Yakuza Team", they had not to do with the localization process or anything. That's on Sega of America and Atlus USA who made that effort. Here you want to talk to is Square Enix Europe, not the team in Japan.

1. I own every Yakuza game that has hit the west, and I am a big fan of the series, but Yakuza games, other than the first one, don't get dubs.

2. Who are you to judge who has or has not good taste in games?

You''re correct. Should've said Yakuza games instead of Yakuza team. But that doesn't really effect the point I was making, which is that DQ and Yakuza were the last long running, big budget AAA Japanese franchises that were getting second class treatment in the west, and now that the Yakuza series has gotten with the times, only DQ remains. And I'd argue it's even more frustrating for DQ because the early Yakuza games all bombed in the west whereas DQ8 and 9 were actually successful, and then they did jack shit to capitalize on that success.

It's not even up for debate. DQ is one of the most mishandled franchises in the industry.

Can I trust in Square to not fuck up the PC port? Do we have confidence in them this go around?

Well, they did jackshit to capitalize on that success is kind of a misconception. The remakes of Dragon Quest came for DS and 3DS after the release on Japan, Dragon Quest Heroes I and II came as well, just like DQ Builders. The only ones that never came were DQ Monsters because the first one on DS bombed and DQX which is a MMORPG

That cover is kinda spoilerish, isn't it? I just passed this event so I'm glad I'm seeing it for the first time today and not yesterday. Sometimes I don't get localization choices.

This is one of those things that means very little to you without context, so saying it's a spoiler is what ends up actually spoiling people. If nobody knows to pay attention to it, then they won't, and they won't think anything of it.

Not a misconception at all. Releasing remakes on a different system several years later while stripping features from the games, releasing them out of order and giving them none of the marketing and hype that DQVIII got is not capitalizing on the success of something. The only company that did anything with DQ in the west on the DS was Nintendo, and it worked with DQIX. They advertised it heavily. They got Seth Green for the commercial. They drummed up hype. They made it seem like it was a big deal. And the shit sold.

The DQVII remake came, comically, almost 4 years after it's Japanese release, and I will give you that it's easily the least casual friendly DQ game in existence and not at all the game you want someone to have their first taste of DQ with.

I don't think the DQ Heroes could've sold well no matter what they did, given that it's a Musou spinoff with it's best asset being it's fan service. But it certainly didn't help that DQ Heroes 1 was the first DQ game of any kind to be released in 5 years. Passing on localizing a mainline entry in your series but then releasing the spinoffs is the special kind of agita only S-E America is capable of giving their fans.

And Builders actually sold decently.

Yeah that's why I put it in spoiler myself, but I still do think it's showing a bit too much. I know in my case the event in question would have had a lesser impact had I seen this image beforehand... Anyway, I'll stop posting here in fear someone opens a tag by accident.

Bought the PC version already.

But I haven't really check out many video or anything, bought it cause I'm psyched for another big AAA DQ, after I loved 8 so much.

So what's the combat like? Turn based? Tension or whatever that was from 8?

I quite like the voice acting. I also don't get how changing the names is that big of a deal. It's all part of localizing.
Each character has a niche and will be useful in battle, him included. You can freely swap party members in battle and all living members inactive or active gain experience. You will definitely find yourself using everyone, which I really liked.
Cool, you aren't forced to have the main guy in your party.
Also cool, less grinding.

I'm about five hours in, and the VA performances have been really, really good IMO. I think y'all will settle in and end up liking them a lot.

Have you messed around with the Draconian Quest options yet? If so, can you simply raise the overall encounter difficulty, but leave everything else the same as the default difficulty?

Damnit I'm so excited about this. It looks so damn bright and chipper just what the world needs.

Closest thing we're getting to a DQ8 sequel. Until someone mods the PC version with the CD music that is.

No I have not, and don't intend to until much later. I need to be pretty laser focused to even get a competent review in progress out by embargo. The game is obviously huge, and most of my day is spent writing and managing the site, not actually playing the games. I have to do that in my free time, so I'm just playing straight through (still poking around in every damn corner looking for items though).

If I mess around with any I'll let you know, but off the top of my head, I do believe that one of the options is to simply make encounters harder.

I'll check with PR and see if I can discuss those options in some detail. If so I'll report back.

Thanks. No need to put any kind of priority on it, or even really consider it further though (unless you just happen to have it organically answered). I'm getting the game regardless, and I'm sure my question will be answered by more than one source before release.

+1. I heard the default difficulty is a bit on the easy side, even for DQ standards?

From the portion of the japanes version that I've played(around 13 hours), it was ridiculous after 2-3 hours point.... at first I thought it wasn't that bad... but then boss die way too fast. I think it stay like this for 1 or 2 exception that I haven't reach. This was one of the main reason that i've stop...

They don't sound amazing but it's not HORRIBLE like I was expecting from some reactions in here, I can't wait for this game.

I also want to hear about the added difficulty modes and if it's just a toggle.

I think Spider-Man will be a juggernaut that will hurt its sales.

Why would it though, unless you can really only afford that single game in September? Unless you're strictly speaking about advertising, then sure, no contest.

I'm getting both, but then I feel like I'm always starving for the games that I actually want to play anymore anyway.

I'm only getting DQXI and I assume I'm not alone on this one, also on PC there's only one option so hopefully it does well there.

I need the Yakuza 0 effect with DQXI, first mainline game ever on Steam.

Prefer not to have that with DQ games though. It just always sounded weird to me to hear it in them.

Playing the PS2 version of V right now, I couldn't disagree more. The orchestra music really adds a lot of punch and gravitas to scenes.

People are strangely picky when it comes to voice acting.

I think a lot of people will think "why buy both DQXI and Spider-Man at the same time when I'm only going to be playing one this month?" and that most of 'em will be fans of Spider-Man, which will heavily hurt DQXI's sales early on, at least.

I am only getting this and Spyro in September, Assassins Creed will be a Christmas gift for myself and RDR2 in October is all I plan this year.

No hype for Spiderman but I might get it cheap next summer.

Pretty excited for this! I will miss out on it at launch, but I do want to support this franchise any way I can considering how it this getting localized at all feels like a small miracle. This is actually a rare case where I would love to see the mobile versions of the earlier games get released on more platforms. I would buy just about all of them.

Was there any reason given for changing Martina's name to Jade? Seems pointless to me.

I'm only getting DQXI and I assume I'm not alone on this one, also on PC there's only one option so hopefully it does well there.

The first two Dragon Quest games actually came to Japanese computers, although obviously they never got localizations. Still it is a super exciting time for the series, hope this does well on all platforms!

If anyone thinks that Veronica is just a usual JRPG moe loli, they will be ashamed of their words and deeds.

She's great.

I like how her design reminds me of older school lolis like Akazukin Chacha.
