For those who were waiting to buy Chrono Trigger PC until all the major patches were out, that day has finally come.

[Recap for those not in the loop: Chrono Trigger received a PC version back in late February, but it was extremely problematic. Little more than a straight port of the mobile version, the game featured a clunky UI, poorly-implemented texture streaming which caused noticeable seams between tiles, controls that were obviously not made with the PC in mind whatsoever, and a host of other minor problems. After facing a considerable backlash from user reviews and feedback, Square commissioned a series of updates to the game to both fix these problems and make the game much more suited for the PC platform. The last of the updates was released today.]

The fifth and final major update for Chrono Trigger adds in full keybinding for keyboards, and partial binding for controllers(you can change what the A/B/X/Y buttons do). There's also a new Extras option in the main menu which lets you view the movies and endings you've seen once you first clear the game. (Unfortunately, this only applies to endings you unlock after this patch today. Good things come to those who wait, I guess...)

For those curious, here are all the updates, and their biggest changes. Click on the update number for full patch notes:
  • Update #1 (added option to use original, un-filtered graphics, updated in-game typeface)

  • Update #2 (replaced UI with a brand new interface; the old one still remains as an option and was optimized for touchscreen PCs)

  • Update #3 (various changes to the dialog UI)

  • Update #4 (various changes to the UI and title screen)

  • Update #5 (final update; adds Extras menu and implements keyboard/controller rebinding)
The game still isn't perfect - the achievements are still lousy, I would have loved to have a bestiary, and a few other features from the DS version are still missing - but this is a considerable improvement since the game's launch a few months ago. It's quite the change on Square's part as well, who just a few years ago would put out some lackluster ports on Steam and call it good. (If only they'd waited until now to release the Final Fantasy V and VI ports...)

What do you all think? Is CT back on your "to buy" list, or has the ship already sailed for you? (Or somewhere in between?) I've personally waited on playing through the game until the last of the big patches, a move which seems to have paid off, what with the endings gallery only showing the ones you've unlocked from today onward. Ultimately, however, I'm glad that the game is patched up, and that Square is really showing interest in improving their PC ports.

It seems fine. Not perfect, but fine. I'd probably buy it if I had some hankering for the game.

Honestly, I picked it back up (after refunding it during release) once it became evident that they were actually going to support the title and patch it up.
It's gotten enough love for me to feel comfortable recommending it to people now, which is quite an improvement.

Really wish they had applied the same patches to the iOS version. It was pretty good until they released that crappy filter for both mobile and PC, and then they backed out of the PC one later.

But good news for the PC crowd, it's a fantastic game and it looks like this adds some considerable stuff.

I've never actually played Chrono Trigger and I've been hankering for a classic JRPG to play so I might go and buy this.

Now go back and patch FFVI so I can play the game without having to either deal with the PS1 version (which I bought and, damn, those delays) or pay £70 for a SNES Classic.

This is the best version of the game now, all things considered. I'd be happy if this exact same version was ported to consoles.

Nice effort that hopefully encourages them to get things right on the first try next time.

Will buy the game on Steam as I can't find the DS-version anywhere for a good price. It's a game I've been wanting to play for a long time.

Eh, I doubt that'll happen. Square seems to be incredibly stingy nowadays when it comes to ports of their classic games. That there still isn't a reliable cheap (as in, not paying for a SNES Classic) way to play the original versions of any Final Fantasy pre-VII on consoles is staggering. You'd think such a significant series would have enough ports to put Resident Evil 4, Limbo and Okami to shame.

I wish they'd do the same to FFVI. That game is in serious need of a definitive version.

I kept holding off playing it until the final patch. Now I can get to finally finishing the game for once. Got pretty close to the end on the SNES Classic, but decided to sell it.

That's all looking a lot better than how they started out.

And yes, fix FF VI next please.

The text is still blurred, the text shadow is still poorly implemented, the text boxes are poorly stretched textures, and there's non-uniform pixels all over the place.

You may think that's nitpicking, but it's a sprite based game with a focus on narrative. Pixels and text are the visually most important parts of the game.

Chrono Trigger deserves better. Skip on this port and send them a message.

Can i get some more screenshots?
In particular the battle menus?
Anyone please?

At least they fixed it eventually. There are still other ports of Android games from Square (FF VI stands out) that look like a mess and could use an option to use the SNES graphics. Hell, they don't even properly scale the image, so that tiling is broken in all of them (like it was with Chrono Trigger, before they updated it).

Hope this leads to Square rethinking their strategy of just dumping games on Steam with 0 thought put into how it could play well on PC and what people expect.

Good stuff. Would be great if they could do the same to all the old FF ports they butchered.

You can play in both 16:9 and the original 4:3. The resolution selector even labels them:

I'm probably being dense here but unless it's full screen (which is stretched), I seem to get windowed mode, which I hate. How can I get 4:3 but with the black bars on the sides?

Forget these halfassed remakes. Emulate the goddamned rom already. It's easier on the developers and the users will be happier.

It's back on my to buy list.

I'm glad the community let Square Enix know that the mobile port was not enough.

I wish Square Enix would go back and 'fix' the other ports on Steam.

Anyways, hopefully they learned from this and won't pull something like this again.
