So, Ionno, supposedly Destiny on Twitch is like a good person but then he called someone a "retarded fag" on League of Legends. The first hour of this podcast is completely bonkers. It's downplaying the severity of hate language. I don't know why but it's truly fascinating just how far up their asses these individuals are. You got people downplaying racism because it's not intended to be harmful, admitting to saying some really racist words in private with their absolutely not-racist friends, and that people inject their agenda and aren't actually mad about things like the host going on a rant about how women are destroying Twitch.

Twitch was a mistake.

Also Destiny isn't a good person(whatever that means) and he has said openly people assume this falsely just cause he has similar conclusions as most progressives.
He had a talk with someone recently on his use on the f word and honestly that one was really hard to follow didn't make a lot of sense to me.
In any case his stance on hate language is basically he doesn't care beyond it producing negative outcomes for himself (bans or amassing a racist/homophobic community) as I understand it.

Him defending using the word is incredibly stupid and dense, especially when he recognizes the overall issue with it, but that doesn't make him a bad person.

It's a bigot problem. You list examples in your OP of Homophobia, Sexism, and Ableism.

Twitch has failed to deal with it. Youtube has failed to deal with it. Shitholes like Reddit and Twitter explicitly refuse to deal with it.

All of these platform's failures have combined to make the entire online community, but especially the gaming community, an inhospitable hellhole of bigotry.

Of course "not all gamers", and "not all online communities", but enough. Enough. Nothing will change until the people at the top of these organisations realise and accept the harm they are doing, then realise and accept that preventing that harm is more important than some nebulous "free speech" bullshit.

I'm with and against this at the same time. Shitty people will always exist. Having a safe breeding ground give the opportunity to attempt to be a shitty person though.

Environments need to be regulated better to not spew hate which is definitely parasitic. It's not different then any facet of society. Uneducated people living in a largely uneducated area will make decisions based on that environment. Same goes with the internet. That's why so many come out of the woodwork, because it seems A-OK.

Not to downplay the racism, but Twitch (and plenty of other places both on the internet and IRL) has a problem with pretty much everything. Hell, just using the example you quoted there's ableism and homophobia.

It's a shame too, because there are some legitimately great communities on Twitch and the live interaction is part of what can make it great, but you wouldn't know it when you watch pretty much any major event on the platform.

To clarify I just don't necessarily subscribe to bad/good as useful descriptive adjective of a person. I think the way hateful slurs are used in society in general breeds worse environment for people the slurs are targeted at historically so it feels like a lot of behavior insisting on their public use seems unnecessarily harmful when not using them doesn't seem to be that huge detriment. I also don't really subscribe to the idea that people always jump to the logic a racist action does not make a racist. I mean sure there is very likely a lot of truth to that but it doesn't seem to me when it comes to outcomes that it's a very useful differentiation in a lot of cases. Cause in the end we have a sea of "not actual racist" making racist remarks with a couple actual racists mixed in with no way to immediately tell them apart.
It also provides all these very useful excuses for actual racists.

On the other hand I think a differentiation that I'm ok with is slurs in private settings, everyone can figure that out for all I care on an individual basis as when it's contained in a private setting I don't necessarily see the harm if for whatever reason someone is so compelled to use them when no participant in the conversation takes offense.

Sorry went on a bit here but basically I didn't really mean it as a judgement of him being bad(other people can judge away). Bad/good are very one note descriptors lacking nuance to describe people. Assessing through levels of harmfulness or similar seems much more useful.

Like, Destiny says in the podcast that he has a friend who says some hateful homophobic shit and stopped saying the F word around him because he didn't want to be seen as an ally to him. He still says it because he believes he does it without ill-intent, so when he and his other not racist friends get together, they go all out with the racism, homophobia, etc. Even mentions his private chatlogs are a big issue.

No one bats an eye. They just agree or silently nod.

Like others said, Twitch is a platform for assholes. Twitch doesn't have a problem, the internet does.

And unfortunately, there's probably nothing anyone can do about it.
