Was this a thing? I noticed this on my playthrough and didn't really give it a second though. "huh, cool." was about it.

It's on (4-3) Amiss Abyss, not in the Wii U version though, so "4 years" is a bit of a stretch...

Samus' gunship is also in Busted Bayou. She must be looking for it!

On Cliffside Slide, one of the platforms is shaped like Crocomire's skull.

Cool to see Retro could include an easter egg from their former franchise while working on Donkey Kong, the game series they were truly meant to work on forever

It is. I didn't notice it was all, I didn't do anything special to see it in the Switch version, just happened to swim back to look for any puzzle pieces I missed. I just assumed it happened for everyone when you swam past. Wish I'd have known.

EDIT: I was unnecessarily rude. It was unprovoked and uncalled for, and I'm sorry for bringing negativity into an otherwise awesome thread.

So the Metroid was just in the background of the level the entire time, without requiring anything special to trigger its appearance? There's a 0% chance this overly excited dude is the first guy to lay eyes upon it. It's actually pretty hilarious and embarrassing that he thinks he is. It's like unironically posting "first!" in a comment section on page 12.

Still, I'm glad you posted this, OP! I love Tropical Freeze and Metroid, but hadn't noticed the cameo before. Retro studios rules.
You have to swim out of the area and come back through a closed passage - meaning you take a hit. It's not something many players would even think to do.

Makes sense why I didn't see it then! I probably should have read the article first before posting, huh? :P Though there's still a 0% chance that guy is the first player to ever find it. But I probably shouldn't be too harsh on him - maybe he just needed a win in life. And maybe I need my morning coffee so I can stop grumbling about someone being wrong on the Internet!

I also didn't know this. That's completely rad - does anyone happen to have a screenshot? I just started replaying Super Metroid on a whim a few days ago, and the Crocomire melting sequence is still one of the best scenes from the 16-bit era.

Don't be so dismissive; he found something and was the first to tell the internet about it, that's more than what any other hypothetical early discoverers did.

(Took me several tries to even see the metroid in the screenshot, it's so small...)

I know, I know. I'm being too harsh. It's still a really neat surprise that I wouldn't have otherwise heard about without him tweeting it (as this thread wouldn't have even been created). I'd be excited too if I were him. Sorry for bringing needless snark into an otherwise friendly conversation!

Now I'm going to go perk up and degrump with some coffee.

Good job Shane! Out of curiosity, were you looking for it specifically, or did you just stumble upon it?

I'm glad it was eventually found, and enough time had passed that the years it went undiscovered is a big part of the reveal.

I was looking for it because there was a datamined sound file called "Metroid Sekrit" that DK fans tried to uncover for a long time in the Wii U era.

I took advantage of the portability of the new version by keeping the game next to my bed and playing it every night with fresh eyes until I did something to trigger it.

Nice! It got datamined pretty soon after release. Didn't realize people were still hunting for it.

Ha, that's awesome to see your post right after his. 4 years is a good run!
