I think pokemon is a victim of it's own success. It's so successful that the developers are far too scared to do any meaningful changes to the game. And that greatly hampers my experience with the series. Franchise fatigue is a real thing, and all the small changes they do aren't interesting to me.

Just take a risk. Take a fucking risk please. Revamp the battle system, or change how pokemon are obtained, or change the time period; far future, or far past? How about an episodic pokemon game? How about a pokemon game about being a professor, or a gym leader, or something. Maybe just switch genres completely?
I don't really care if it doesn't work. I just want them to try it. Even if it's just to cleanse the pallet for a traditional pokemon game again.

Pokemon still feels like a game clinging to it's roots. And I completely understand why they do it. I completely understand diehard fans want their metagame unchanged. But personally; I want pokemon to reinvent itself.

They are right now.
Revamp the battle system
I guess not... but if you do revamp the battle system, it's no longer a "mainline" game.
change how pokemon are obtained
I think this has been changed. Not too much, but at least it's different.
Maybe just switch genres completely?
We're waiting on Pokemon Mystery Dungeon for the Switch

After Gen IV I checked out.
I rly enjoyed it though.
I skipped Gen 5, I'm going to order those one day though.

The 3DS games however killed my hype for the future If it gets done right I'd deff buy in but, I still prefer the 2D games i guess.

I hope next years games are good but if they aren't atleast I have P/Pt/Diamond/Hg/Ss to play

For me, Pokemon is more interesting to discuss game design-wise than to actually play. It's really fascinating.

Unpopular Opinion: I hoped Pokemon Let's Go stays casual, so I can watch a livestream of people play the game using only chat without banning players for trolling.

I heard you can use the Joycon D-buttons to move around just like Pokemon 1st generation games.

I hope it stays casual too, that way the mainline series can stay more complex. Give each demographic what they want so everyone stays happy.

I'm more excited for the one that comes out this year since it seems to be doing something different. Pokemon in it's current format is stale and the series needs to take risks so whatever. Also, let's not pretend the main series is exactly complex either. It's a cakewalk, it has always been so. If you want complexity then get Octopath traveler.

It's almost as if game quality is subjective.

I personally find Generation 7 games among the best. As a series progresses, it will always be split in which game is best and older fans will often claim their favourites.
However, recent titles did cause lots of controversial issues in Pokemon community and more and more bitching stuff showed up everywhere. You want to prove that people are inclined to express their negative feelings or they are becoming sensitive these days, don't you? These subjective opinions are sort of reflecting the facts. In general, longtime hardcore fans have more patience and sympathy with this old series, but that does not mean that fans should bear all of the defects. I hope that gf and tpc don't cross bottom line anymore. For the 2019 title, new Pokemon, story, map and characters are not all for a completely new title, or it will turn out to be another xy/sm. I hope to see a real evolution in this series and the corresponding high game quality on switch, not tiny tricks like mega/zmove which screwed up battle mechanism(I don't mean I dislike these changes, but they're so complicated that few benefits for longtime development) or a lazy copy thing decorated with a beautiful fake innovation skin.

The way I see it there's only a bit of circumstantial evidence that points in either direction. LG says to me they aim to bring a better fan experience with split main series entries. The 3DS games show a dangerous trend of over-simplicity and linearity (honestly sort of exaggerating this here but still). They've spent a lot of time developing the game, but they're also not known for taking big risks. Honestly regardless of whether it turns out good or bad, I'm just excited to see how they use this opportunity.

Let's Go will be a cute little nostalgic bite of a game.

I expect the 2019 title to be off the charts in hype among the fans when the first info and footage is released. That's the real shit with new pokemon and mechanics.
