EDIT: LOLLL typo in the thread title, i swear it's soooo fitting!!!

I went to gamestop two days ago, for the first time in years. I had some old games and controllers to trade in and figured this would be easier than doing the usual amazon trade in routine. I was going to receive $125 store credit when the clerk asked me if i want to sign up for their power rewards for $6, saying it would give me 20% more for my trade in. I said OK sure that pays for itself.

He rings it up and all of a sudden i'm only geting $98. I look at it and it says he signed me up for the bullshit rewards program AND a subscription of game informer without telling me. I told him to take that shit off, i'll take my $125 store credit and be happy i'm not going to go to gamestop that frequently anyways.

So i go home with my gift card, thinking everything is great and dandy. I get home today and decide i'll go ahead and just buy madden and RDR2 with the gift card, so i go online and put both in my cart. I add my card number and pin, click apply funds. It does so, then i click submit order and get an error. No big deal, i'll do it again. I do it again, but when i go to apply the funds, it says i have $1 left on my card. I've checked my email checked everything to see if the order went through and it DID NOT., So they've taken my shit and then took their money back on top of it, and i have NOTHING.

Now, i've been on hold with their customer service for 17 minutes listening to a god awful advertisement that i guess is supposed to be like a gaming podcast? How is GameStop still around when they're SOOOOO consistently bad???

I haven't been in one in forever. I assume it's all Funko Pops now, since that's all I see on the window posters.

The Power Ups reward program gives your GameInformer for $15 a yr.

Call the store and they'll realize the games were never added to the system and they'll put them to the side and wait for you to return to do the transaction.

Power Up Rewards is definitely not $6. The 20% extra one was the Elite tier which they no longer sell as of yesterday. That goes for $30 a year. Game informer subscription is complementary to the Power Up Rewards Pro/Elite. Don't know why you ended up with $98, you should have ended up with over $100

You don't understand, there is no transaction. It applies the money before you submit the order and apparently counts it despite the order error i got that prevented the order from going through. I ordered Madden and RDR digital downloads, there is no store. Been on hold over half an hour now listening to this stupid fake podcast.

Okay to explain the bolded part to you. The PUR Pro Elite thing or whatever it was that would give you 20% more on your trade costs 30$, the way its rung up on your receipt is 15 for the card and 15 for the GI magazine I have no idea why it does it like that but when I worked there years ago there was always weird shit like that. The reason he said it would be 6$ is because you'd get 20% more on your trades (or at least should have in theory) 20% of $120 is 24$ thats how he got the 6. The fact that it dropped your trades down 98$ sounds to me like it had not applied the bonus you would have gotten in the end on the transaction when you told him to take it off, at least thats what I would guess in theory.

Either way he should have explained it to you in better detail but he wasn't trying to rip you off or anything.

Online errors happen all the time for various stores and not just Gamestop, hopefully whenever you get someone on the line they can fix it quickly for you.

It sounds like the clerk signed you up for the elite membership which is the only one that offers 20% extra trade credit and it's supposed to cost $30.

The problem with that is they discontinued that program starting yesterday. I would have thought they were quietly told to stop hawking those a few days prior to the official cancellation but even if they didn't, he told you the wrong price. You can't even get the pro membership for $6 (it's $15).

It's funny reading all the complaints about GameStop in the US when the Australian equivalent EB is pretty much the best place to get games here still.

It's because of the 20% trade bonus. He was trading in over 120$ worth of stuff so the 20% of that would have saved him 24$ off the 30$ card, thus 6$. My only guess on why it dropped to 98$ is that he was looking at a price before it refactored in that 20% bonus or something to that effect.

I asked him, why is it only $98 now and he said something about unfortunately you have to subscribe to the magazine we can't do it without it. He didn't say anything about it not including the bonus.

Anyways, i'm not even angry about that, i just want my $125 back, i'm too poor for this shit. I've been on hold for 47 minutes now and i'm convinced there isn't actually anybody who ever answers the phone.

Sounds to me like there was a miscommunication on his part, some people really don't get that you need to properly explain how it all works. Speaking from somewhat distant experience as an employee you get used to doing the math in your head over and over again so it becomes second nature to just explain how much it'll actually cost out of what it was and how all the math adds up and what not.

I don't imagine that'll be hard to fix on their end they can reverse the charge on the card pretty easily unless things have changed since I worked there like 5 years ago, its just a matter of talking to an actual person on the freaking phone.

Nah they're not that bad. I've been to well over three dozen GameStops between different cities, states, and even countries, and a vast majority of my experiences have been fine. As long as you know what you're doing and remain cognoscente you should be fine for the most part.

They have issues sometimes, but welcome to retail. Not really exclusive to GameStop. The problem in the OP sounds more like this rather than an inherent GS problem, so not sure why you blame the entire company for this.

It's funny reading all the complaints about GameStop in the US when the Australian equivalent EB is pretty much the best place to get games here still.
It's really not that bad. While it can definitely be bad, a lot of complaints are overblown, or scenarios like people not realizing they won't get $60 back for trading in their five year old version of Fifa.

Regardless of anything else, their atrocious customer service line would earn them their bad reputation. Those fucking advertisements are completely beyond annoying.

The workers in the stores are usually pretty chill and cool, the higher ups and their polices are trash and should be thrown out like it. However, that's usually how corporate America is though.

Well...you're not wrong.

It's actually worse than you're probably imagining.

I walk in every few months since it's next to a Target I frequent, and it's just sad. They're clearly not making money on video games and have resorted to dedicating every spare inch of floor and wallspace to Funko Pop figures, t-shirts, and vaguely video game related and pop-culture swag.

The manager looks like he wants to die.

It's weird hearing people talk about shopping at GameStop. It's like we're in the 90's. I haven't bought retail in over a decade and haven't had to deal with any nonsense like this.

I don't go to gamestop anymore since I talked to a clerk there about 2 years ago and he was all like "Yeah.. Games, huh."
And then I asked him about Death By Degrees and he didn't know what it was or who Nina Williams was...!

(also their used games are more expensive than new games at mediamarkt or müller, ridiculous)

There used to be a small one EB Games in mall in the city I live near. It was one of the more profitable ones in the region but had terrific staff (minus the fat sloth owner who was eventually replaced). Staff were talkative, knowledgeable, weren't obnoxious about pre-orders and actually sold new games in factory sealed wrap. Eventually malll gets renovated and the place was changed to an EB EXPO complete with miles of collectible overpriced crap and a funko pop wall. Service got mouthy and they sold "new games" with one of those circle stickers. Fun fact EB if you took it out of the package to display it, then put it back in and put a new seal on it, its not new... It was RE7 and a gift from parents, not blaming them at all of course cause they wouldn't know any better.

Go to return it, guy behind the desk got mouthy, last copy "How else would we sell one from on display?" Well not new buddy, cause you know, you opened it. Whatever their policies are. I miss the old one so much, fuck the Expo.

All being said, never trade games to gamestop anyway it will never be a fair deal, hell I stopped trading in games when I was 10, when I realized the COUNTLESS gems I traded in, some of which are very hard to find now.

Little bit, yeah. They've been moving away from pure video games and shifting more towards a video game/video game culture type of store. Honestly I don't think they can compete with Hot Topic, FYE, and Boxlunch on that front and the amount of ground they're giving in the video game department will give Best Buy a better chance to catch up with them. Without pre-order bonuses and used games they don't really do much anymore

I've never had a problem with my local Gamestop. If there's something I want on release day they usually have it and there's no issue checking out.

All of the EB's I visit, half the store is Funko Pops.

Also the managers are always bitching at the young girls working there. Also they hired them specifically to get guys into the store. So fucking gross. Refuse to shop there.

I've bought most of my games at GameStop for as long as I can remember and I've had minimal bad experiences. Sure sometimes the employees can be annoying and/or really dry but there's also some really friendly ones. I give major props to the GameStop closest to me for hooking me up with a Switch bundle deal when every other place was bone-dry. I was able to get my Switch and was playing BOTW just a couple weeks after launch. Also whenever there's a midnight release for a game I'm anticipating I'm always there, the first one being Halo 2 in '04 and the most recent one being God of War a few months ago.

Last time I went to gamestop I told them I wanted to trade in my scratched copy towards a working one.

Girl thought she was slick and tried to sneak in a warranty, told her no and was hit with a refurb fee.

I'm pretty much done with them.

Yeah that happened with me too. It was during b2g1 free 3ds games. I bought 6 3ds games and dude tried to sneak SIX warranties on them. I was like uhhhhhh, I didn't ask for these but nice try. He was like oh, I thought you wanted them!
