The alt-right actually kind of want people to publicly defend her so they can sit back and claim the left is hypocritical about these things.

I mean, the don't really care if she is fired or not. Yeah her tweets are stupid. Why do people keep falling for their tactics.
So the secret is to do nothing.

Cherry picking tweets from people who are often mocking trolls and using extreme forms of sarcasm & satire will never look well. You're removing them 100% from the context of the situation that prompted them to be said.

There are plenty of other woman journalist who are equally as satrical and sarcastic when addressing similar topics. And you know what, every damn time it's hilarious to read them.

Having a bit more context for this now with stuff people have posted about the timing of these tweets and also seeing more of them which are a lot more pointedly satirical than the ones in the OP, I suddenly care less about the giving ammo to the right thing. What seemed like random inflammatory trolling doesn't seem so much like that now. They really will use anything. I still think the tweets are obnoxious, and if the goal is to proliferate progressive ideals then they've probably done more harm than good - but fuck it. I get it.

At first I was just kind of whatever about it but now I'm glad that the response to this has been to emphatically NOT fire her. Dumb tweets, heart in the right place. The James Gunn stuff, while not really comparable to this in terms of intention, is comparable in strategy from the right and I'm glad to see that in this case an adaptation was made to that strategy and it has failed.

Wow everyone on the first page seems to be cool with the tweets. This place is weird sometimes.

Yes, it would seem weird at first glance to be cool with a prank where you call someone and pretend like their house burned down with their children inside and they're like crying and then you're like LOL just a prank bro.

Until you realize the person you pranked has a history of going around and actually burning down other people's homes.

Then you're like oh huh maybe that was mean but I guess they're just trying to make someone understand how horrible that feels. When it ACTUALLY happens.

Ya I feel like I'm in la la land right now.....
I dunno man, this seems like par for the course for Era.

Don't get me wrong, I don't think the tweets are racist after learning the context...but they're still shitty jokes that people seem to be putting on a pedestal simply because they're shitting on white people.

We've had centuries of jokes about how black people smell bad or are only black because they can't wash properly or some shit.
It's so ingrained into our society that we even have goddamn comic strips about it

And you guys can't take a "white people smell bad" tweet with a shitty graph?

Plus, the collage of tweets was designed specifically to remove context and make her words seem objectionable. If you feel they are, you're falling for the ploy and need to look again, try to give them the context that was hidden from you.

Even as burns, these aren't any good. One of those is literally just "u stink".

Twelve year olds on Fortnight have handed out harsher burns.

They're just ugly tweets in response to uglier tweets. Just another day in the flaming garbage heap that is Twitter.

Yep, this has been my experience over the past couple of hours. I thought I'd be able to spot that kind of thing right away, but I guess not.

Take a minute, folks. Even if you don't think the tweets are good or funny etc, it isn't really about that.

But why did society get so mean now, not before, now that white people are mocked.

I can't believe people care this much, honestly.

NYT is not Disney. She can make edgy jokes and not get fired. There may be consequences from that but there's no rule saying she has to be fired.

To me the Twitter trope of an angry white-hating minority that makes edgy and totally-racist-if-it-was-any-other-race-but-white jokes is about as played out as the opposite "my best friend is black... but anyway here are some 'totally' reputatable crime statistics. Just asking questions!" totally-not-racist white guy trope that I see online all the time.

It's just boring and played out. And I'm surprised enough people still care and act like this is a novel thing in 2018. This was on the front page of Reddit today for crying out loud. I'm sure there are writers on the NYT that say stupid racist shit and treat people with differing political opinions as morons, if the company knows about it and chooses not to fire the person that's their prerogative. That should be the end of the discussion IMO. I see this differently than the James Gunn situation.

So not falling for alt-right faux outrage is the same as putting on a pedestal, or in someone else's words, encouraging?

What?

I'm white and I can't even pretend to give a shit.

oh, and these conservative rags can get fucked with their bullshit.

I mean, the NYT can get fucked too, but for other reasons.

The level of discussion in this thread has not been good and is only getting worse. It appears to have run its course.
