Not the Showbox noooooooooooooooo

Fuck everything about this.

But this is not a done deal by any stretch of the imagination. Call your council members, like now. Try to show up for the public hearings and just generally get involved.

Fuck online petitions, pass this shit around -
Landmarks Preservation Board - Nomination and Designation Process

2. Designation Standards

In order to be designated, the building, object, or site must be at least 25 years old and must meet at least one of the six criteria for designation outlined in the Seattle Landmarks Preservation Ordinance (SMC 25.12.350):

a) It is the location of, or is associated in a significant way with, a historic event with a significant effect upon the community, City, state, or nation; or

b) It is associated in a significant way with the life of a person important in the history of the City, state, or nation; or

c) It is associated in a significant way with a significant aspect of the cultural, political, or economic heritage of the community, City, state or nation; or

d) It embodies the distinctive visible characteristics of an architectural style, or period, or a method of construction; or

e) It is an outstanding work of a designer or builder; or

f) Because of its prominence of spatial location, contrasts of siting, age, or scale, it is an easily identifiable visual feature of its neighborhood or the city and contributes to the distinctive quality or identity of such neighborhood or the City.

In addition to meeting at least one of the above standards, the object, site, or improvement must also possess integrity or the ability to convey its significance. At the public meeting on designation, the Board will receive evidence and hear arguments as to whether the site, building or object meets the standards for designation. If the Board does not designate the property, the proceedings terminate and the property cannot be considered for designation for five years, except at the request of the owner.

Seem like The Showbox meets the criteria, easily. Someone need to file an application with the city, and I'm pretty damn sure someone will, if they haven't already. Main thing to do is to follow the news and show up for hearings. And as always, call your council member.
This is a winnable fight.

That is what the petition is for. To rally awareness for it to become a historic landmark.

Not sure if this is the right place for it, but my dog went missing on the Eastside a little over 36 hours ago.

She looks like this:

She was last seen in the Crossroads neighborhood between Crossroads and Lake Hills Village on 156th on the night she disappeared. If any of you guys have seen her shoot me a PM.

Damn man, so sorry to hear. I'm over in North Beacon Hill but I'll definitely keep an eye out if I'm near that area. Hope you find her soon

Had a friend water our garden while we were gone and everything is looking good, but the rain is welcome so I don't have to do it for a few days.

Man, why can't it be a happy medium? I don't want rain. I don't want 90 degrees. Just sunny and 70s!

The rain will be nice to clear out the air a bit, I don't mind if some of it gets on me. Just please turn down the sun a little bit.

It's kind of amazing how consistent Seattle is of having 2-3 weeks of uncomfortable heat for the summer, and that's it.

I really hope that NWS is right that it's over after this!

Holy shit. This was a bad heat wave?

This was my first summer in Seattle (from the midwest).

This is gonna be a cakewalk!

Be sure to tell the locals (if you can find any) this. We love to hear it. And don't forget to compare our snow to your midwest storms when the time comes.

Most people here don't have AC. I'm lucky enough to have a portable unit and even with it, my apartment stayed well into the 80s throughout the week.

Yeah this heat wave wasn't bad. It was just that I thought it would go on a lot longer than it did.

I'd love to see an overlay of Summer temperatures in Seattle for each year. I remember some years where we had 1-2 weeks of 100+ temps.

Nah. Seattle has only had one day in in the last twenty years that has gone over 100 (and boy, do I remember it well). I believe last month did hit a new record for hottest average July, though.

I feel like we all collectively do too much complaining about things. I'd like to turn things positive for a change.

I'm really impressed with how Seattle has handled bike shares over the last couple of years.

Pronto didn't work, so the city acknowledged it, and instead partnered with Spin, Lime, and Ofo to have their free-roaming bike shares implemented instead. They started small, and at this point all three companies are collectively limited to 10,000 bikes around the city.

Lime seems to be the most popular by far, probably because of the electric-assisted bikes they've added more recently. People in the city seem to love using them all over the place, and now as people are used to them, there are far fewer instances of them being left in the wrong places.

The city has been really responsible in preventing these things from getting out of hand. The doubling to 20,000 bikes is only happening soon, after a long period of experimentation and study of 10,000 bikes.

In the meantime, cities in California and other states are getting swarmed with scooters. Scooters everywhere. Zero regulation about who's allowed to put scooters on the streets, how many there are, or how they should be handled. But they're not in Seattle at all, at least not yet - and it has to be because the city is responsibly working with companies like Lime (which do have scooters elsewhere) to roll them out in a more controlled way.

The only time I ever used any of those bikes (it was an Ofo) I realized only after riding for several blocks that someone had cut the brakes :(

I wasn't a fan of Pronto because the closest bike station to my house was on Brooklyn in the U district, roughly a mile away. Now with Lime there are normally a few bikes within a block or two of my house. Super easy way to get down to Husky Station and take light rail to an Ms game or have a beer or two at Cloudburst.

I've never used Spin or Ofo, but I'm sure they're just as nice.

edit: My parents in Auburn see random Limes strewn about the town, and my buddy has seen them even down in Olympia.

I had to get a portable unit as well. I'm not saying it I was perfectly comfortable inside, but short length (though it got bad mid June as well) is what surprised me most.

I was just in Omaha for the week visiting my wife's family. It was more humid there but not as hot as Seattle was. And everyone has AC unlike here.

That's where I'm from and yeah, it seems they got a break recently.

Nothing comparable in Seattle/Washington because you actually have choices! I really should change my username anyway, hardly follow college football anymore.

What's everyone's go-to theater in the area? I think Regal downtown has been my favorite so far (Cinerama was nice too, even though I prefer recliners).

AMC Seattle 10 wasn't bad. I want to hop on the AMC A List train, but Regal seems to have them beat as far as theater comfort goes...maybe they'll follow with something similar soon.

I'll usually end up at AMC 10 in the U-District, Pacific Place, or Northgate. Will occasionally do the Pacific Science Center or Cinebarre in Mountlake Terrace though.

The ones you mentioned are good.

I love both Siff Uptwon and Siff Egyptian in Capitol Hill as well. Tend to favor Egyptian since it's so close to me now that I moved to North Beacon Hill.

Cinerama is having their Sound and Vision festival this month and there's going to be some great films playing including the 4K restoration of Bladerunner. Think I might see that and one of Lynch's films too. Might fit in the Mad Max Blood and Chrome version if I can make it as well. I would love to see that version on Cinerama's big screen.

Here's the Cinerama schedule for those interested:

My wife and I walk to AMC 10 a lot, just about a mile from our house. We go to Thornton Place and AMC Oak Tree Village (which has the crazy wide seats with recliner buttons) when it's something with our daughter.

Sometimes we'll find our way to the Egyptian or Uptown. We used to hit up The Neptune, Seven Gables, Harvard Exit, Guild 45, etc. back when they were still in business. [sigh]

I basically only go to movies if work sends me for free, and that's almost always at Lincoln Square in Bellevue.

Sometimes I'll take my kiddo to a movie at Majestic Bay in Ballard tho

I took my daughter to see Teen Titans Go at AMC Oak Tree today. So not used to those massive fat person chairs with the reclining buttons. Very much used to art house theaters with old style theater seats.

AMC Seattle 10 is a pretty easy walk from my house so I usually end up there.

But if a movie is at the Cinerama I'd vastly prefer it.

Next choice though is Big Picture, which is a really fun place to watch movies.

AMC and Regal downtown are a backup for me.

Big Picture is nice. I got a gift card from my work and used it there on Batman vs Superman.......what a horrible mistake.
