I woke up feeling like garbage today because I voluntarily stayed up later than usual and only got five hours of sleep. It's days like these that give me a kick-in-the-ass reminder to "just go to sleep, stupid." It really is a game changer. I know there are those who have a hard time keeping a regular sleep schedule or going to sleep on a regular schedule, but for those of us who CAN fall asleep early so we get those 7-8 hours, it's self-flagellation not to do it.

Same with food. Same with exercise. I feel like crap after drinking a Coke or eating a bag of chips. Why do I do it? Why do any of us? Because it's addictive as hell and it's easy. But you know what your body really needs if you wean yourself off garbage food over time.

In terms of exercise, I never have more energy than when I'm sticking to a regular yoga routine of just twenty minutes per day. It's stupid NOT to do it because the benefits are so obvious. And yet, I still fall off the wagon here and there.

Anyway, I suppose this is a reminder thread and a support thread for those of us struggling to do the things we know are good for us but that we actively avoid or neglect. I know not everyone can afford to eat healthy all the time, not everyone is physically capable of exercising on a regular basis, and not everyone is able to keep a regular schedule, but the rest of us don't have much of an excuse. :-/

Sleep. Eat. Exercise. Repeat. The physical (and mental to some degree) benefits are obvious. Let's do it, gang.

Can't wait to get to bed today. Feeling like sheeeeit.

These 3 things in tandem really are like....their own little super-boost of good feels.

If those habits have never been disciplined then you might not notice, but when all 3 are in unison and you stop? YOU NOTICE THAT SHIT.

I think what helps is knowing what really is to gain by doing these things

I know that eating well, getting enough sleep, but most of all exercising regularly keeps my demons away, or at a distance, at least.

Gonna go out for run when the sun's down, been looking forward to it all day! I did eat pizza today though, woops.

This. Also, mental health often gets in the way of physical health so it's not that easy.

Yeah, it's why I tried to be careful with my wording. I know there are people who think "just exercise! You'll feel better!" but it's not that simple for some. Medical intervention is necessary in those cases, and no amount of sleep, good food, and/or exercise will change that right away for some people.

I'm already into a healthy lifestyle in terms of diet and exercise, but holy fuck is it hard to have some quality sleep. Sometimes I sleep for 6 hours and the next day I can barely get 3 hours at max.

This is me. Mentally I just refuse to fucking sleep sometimes. And it fucks me over the next day. It's just annoying.

Any tips OP (or anyone else)? :(

Sleep is what I used to really overlook

It's crazy important-not getting enough sleep literally shortens your life expectancy

I picked up exercising regularly about a year ago now (although I should probably do more), I eat at least three times a day (although I need to eat better), but I definitely sleep enough!

Sleep is so important. I've had the first few days of 7 or 8 hours of sleep in years after only getting 3 or 4 hours a night and I already feel like a different person. Its crazy hot much a good sleep makes all the difference in the world.

I've been on point with exercise for a good while but the diet is up and down and the sleep was horrible. Getting regular good sleeps is going to change my life.

Everything on this earth shortens your life-span. I'd rather live a year or two less and experience more in my prime, younger years on this earth than sleep 8 hours a day.

For sure. It's a matter of developing that habit, though.

Where is this line from...

"We don't overcome our demons. We just learn to live above them." Hard to disagree. I know when dread is around the corner because of my own inaction and actions, and I know I need to fight to keep it at bay. Being aware of that has helped me out a lot.

Yep, I ate Pizza Hut after eating healthy for a few months as a treat to myself. Woke up the next morning feeling like shit. I'd seriously felt hangovers more enjoyable than that.

I'm almost 40 and people think I'm 28 bc I get 8 hours, don't drink a lot, workout and eat decently well. Taking care of yourself really pays off when you're older. Compared to my friends it's like night and day.

Exactly. Being aware of this has ben a great motivator for me.

I would like to propose an addition making it a holy quaternity: meditation. Really helps putting things in perspective.

It's worse than that. it doubles you chances of catching heart disease. it raises your blood pressure. it makes you fatter. it wrecks your memory.

you probably don't want to spend that extra time being like that.

Hell yeah.

I am really into exercise and all, but I recently heard on a podcast that muscle could actually be considered an organ! So it sends signals to different parts of the body. Like to mobilize sugar into the bloodstream if it's needed for movement, to produce hormones, etc.
Which was a huge shock to me thinking all this time that they only received orders from the brain. So now my perspective is that exercise is even more important than it already was.
Everyone should do some kind of resistance training, whether that's yoga or lifting weights or martial arts. Keeping your muscles strong has a massive influence on your health, and quality of life.
And obviously, nutrition is still most important because it gives you all the building materials your body needs to maintain and build all the structures therein.
And I read something on sleep where not getting enough is akin to getting a concussion or something. Anyway, it wasn't good. It's a time where your body is able to perform tons of maintenance tasks, so it is essential.

I don't do any of them well. It's probably part of why I usually feel so shitty.

Even when I try to sleep well, I fail to or wake up tired. Or just wake up a lot through the night. I also either eat too much or too little and skip a lot of meals (always have, even during high school. I snack when I get home but just eat supper mostly). And I don't exercise.

Sleep is a bitch. There doesn't seem to be much rhyme or reason to it.

I have to wake up at 5am five days a week, I make sure to get 7 hours every night but it's still torture to wake up. Way worse than going to bed at 4am and waking up at 11pm for example.

I'm also tired when I get home, no matter what. Which makes it super hard to get to the gym, though I do try.

I love the feeling of sleep, but whoever programmed that shit fucked up big time. It should be way more simple.

Yoga is underrated among most, imo. I do it once or twice a week along with a lifting day and cardio day. If I don't feel like working out, I'll also do yoga.

I love it because I can do it in my basement and a mat is the only equipment I need.

Haven't started on meditation yet, but have been listening to a lot of audio books on its benefits.

Any website you'd recommend for looking more into yoga? I've been needing to get back on my exercise game and I've always seen it pop up but never actually dived into it.

I mean, I stay fit, eat well, sleep well, so I agree with you. But a bag of chips makes you feel like shit? Really? Like, just one of those little lunch size bags? Because that shouldn't be the case. Most of those are around 200cal and contain potato, some oil, and salt. So unless you never eat starchy carbs, then a little bag of chips shouldn't be making you feel like shit.

A secret: exercise will actually help promote good habits in the other 2 things.

Physical activity that is vigorous, enjoyable, and social is key to sustaining a healthy lifestyle.

Look at children. They generally have healthier habits than adults by default, since they lean heavily on instincts still. All their healthier habits are promulgated based on the intrinsic need to play:

They play hard until they get tired and fall asleep.

They play hard until they get hungry and eat only enough to satisfy that hunger. Patents make them eat more than they eat naturally.

They yearn for social interaction as a result of play.

Adults and society need to afford time for playing.

Yeah sleep is the tough one as a proper night's sleep ion top of working out leaves me with maybe 2 hours of free time. Work takes up about 11 hours when you factor in morning routine and commute from 7:15am-6:15pm. Working out takes up about an hour and half from 6:15 to 7:45. Then nightly routine takes around 30 minutes to walk the dog, wash up and everything. I need more time to unwind and so instead of being asleep at 10:30/11 it's more often around midnight or later that I'll actually fall asleep. So I usually get 6.5-7 hours a night, which isn't bad but not a full 8+ I probably should be getting.

Do what i did. Just go to a studio and ask. Some people will be really hippy and talk about chakras and stuff but the overall experience is great. Look for vinyasa or flow classes. I enjoy those the most.

I'm great in food, ok on exercise right now and only get like 7 hours of sleep a night. Really wish I would stop and start getting 8.

Meditation is the fourth, it's more affective/mental regulation than bodily regulation though. But having an internal wellspring of positive mental states naturally supports virtually every other lifestyle change. For something actually rigorous/not new age jazzed up relaxation training, get The Mind Illuminated by Culadasa.
