Such a handy feature, but because it requires 3D Touch barely anyone will ever know it exists. Such an unintuitive gimmick.

The Google keyboard (Gboard) lets you move the cursor by moving your thumb/finger around the spacebar, which is great for smaller edits (not scrolling through multiple paragraphs, though).

I sadly returned my iPhone X to the Apple Store today.

Gorgeous screen, cool gesture controls, and beautiful design......but the news of a 5.8" model for next year made me think I can hold out with my 6S Plus for another year. It sure does feel outdated now though......just a clunky overgrown version of the iPhone 4.

The Cyclone State
Grammarly has a keyboard out on iPhone now and it's excellent. If you've never used the Chrome extension, it checks grammar and spelling in any text field for you. The keyboard is very close to apple's default, but adds the grammarly checker. It's really nice.

Some differences I've noticed from Android...

- Is it possible to "swipe away" a notification?
- Can I dismiss an alarm before it triggers? Like if I wake up ten minutes before my alarm and don't want it going off incessantly while I'm in the shower...
- How do I drag the cursor while typing to reposition it? So far, trying to drag around text has been a crapshoot... I miss the poignant cursor from Android.
1 - a drop down notification you can just swipe up. Lock screen or Notification Center you can swipe left and hit Clear.
2 - no. However if you give the alarm a name you can tell Siri to turn it off. Just remember to have her turn it back on
3 - already answered I see.

Yeah I do wish they'd give Siri a way to skip/pause an alarm.

Here's a decent list on Siri commands. Doesn't look updated for 11 though.

You could probably make a workflow for the clock situation?

This year's is 5.8". But yeah there's rumors of a 6.5".

I agree about how the 6s Plus feels now, but imagine the 8 Plus then. 2 years later and the same body. Ouch. Much faster and overall better yeah, but it's trapped in some ancient-ass engineering.

Although it IS the same design for almost 4 years now, I don't see what's particularly wrong with it. I understand that 2017 is all about dat edge-to-edge displays but still the iPhone 8 looks like a nice phone to my eyes and you get the same internals with the convenience of the Home button and Touch ID.

For when you're using the settings?

That's cool and all but it's the apps that have to offer a dark mode, as I'd wager that's where people spend the most time.

I guess Apple could provide the framework and the push for apps to support a "smart dark theme" rather than the smart invert option.

Although as we're seeing, it's hard enough to make them support new resolutions, let alone more stuff.
The Smart Invert feature is the framework that Apple has already made for this purpose. App makers need to make use of it, those that don't lead to inverted images etc. when it's enabled.

It's just the normal expectation of evolution. With every generation of a body past iPhone 4, Apple has slightly reduced the bezels every couple of years, first the 5, then the 6, and even then, they were pretty conservative compared to some of the competition. The 6's body lasting 4 years means it got really outdated bezels for a 2017 phone, paired with that big-ass display of the Plus model it gets really unnecessarily unwieldy for a phone that can also cost almost $1K. Not to mention the LCD display, although state-of-the-art in its department. I don't think the home button is such a big convenience, I genuinely dig the gestures of the X and wouldn't like to go back. Touch ID is cool though, as it provides something Face ID can't (and vice-versa) but the price to pay for it is a bit much.

I was already pretty irked by the 7 where Apple literally applied a new coat of paint on an old design and called it a day, while biding time for the 10th anniversary redesign. It felt stop-gap, while the 8 feels budget alternative. At a nevertheless high price.
The Smart Invert feature is the framework that Apple has already made for this purpose. App makers need to make use of it, those that don't lead to inverted images etc. when it's enabled.
But the thing is, doesn't it achieve the opposite when you're dealing with an app that's already black or dark? That's why I think it shouldn't be "invert" but straight up "smart dark mode" so that the goal is more clear for both developers and users. And if an app is already dark, it would just inform the OS of that, so that the mode wouldn't affect it at all.

I just miss this thing.

Precise, provides a magnified indicator of where you are, tap to open up options which include "select all," "cut," "copy," and so on.

I realize I'm just sitting here bitching about all the things iOS is not good at compared to Android... I'm just adjusting I guess lol.

Once you know about it that shortcut becomes 2nd nature, probably the best use of 3D Touch overall.
2018 is when the big upgrades will happen. Next year's IPad Pro model will have a 120hz OLED display, and probably look like a giant X without the notch.
Got a good source for that? Because I'd put money down there won't be a 120Hz OLED option on the iPad until 2019 at the earliest. FaceID is probably a shoe-in, though.

...I didn't know you could do that.

Yay, I just did it. That sets a big non-issue to rest.

Seems the difference on Apple is that you have to tap the cursor to bring up the selection dialog first, whereas on Android you just need to drag around and it'll show up.

If you force press on the keyboard you can fine tune the cursor position

Awesome, glad you're working it out. Feel feel to ask more questions!
Yeah, it's handy. you can also double tap words when you're in "edit text" mode to select it.

Oh snap, Verizon shipped my iPhone X already. It's like 3 weeks earlier than the expected date they gave me.

Is there an easy way to add your fixed mon-fri work schedule to Apple's calendar? I'm struggling here
I'm not sure if there is an easy way to manually add it to your calendar or if it's even feasible. I would try using a work shift app that will sync that information to Calendar instead. I did that a while back for my previous job.

I need some help y'all. Been searching through this thread too, but it's kind of a hassle because it's so big, there's a million posts, and then there's the thread we left behind too.

Phone is finally coming in in a few days. I'm looking for a case, but as you might imagine, we all have our different preferences and there are a million cases out there that are slight variations of one another. What I need in a case:

- Reasonable drop protection, not one of those skin-esque cases that do the bare minimum, but not an otterbox either because I can't deal with that bulk even though drop protection is of utmost importance.
- Lip around camera and front so it can lie flat and be protected
- No cutouts, egregious branding, or designs. Something as minimal as can be and black (or clear on the back; I'm getting a Space Gray).
- Preferably buttons access that isn't flush and I can feel around for it
- Preferably available in Canada (but I can always look for this myself).

Looking around, seems like I've narrowed it down to Spigen's Ultra Hybrid or Supcase's Unicorn Beetle, leaning towards the Ultra Hybrid because the buttons aren't flush. Just wondering if there's anything else I should be considering, considering how important a case purchase is.

Go with something with a microfiber lining.

Thanks, but I tried one, and then at the end, they tried to charge me a monthly fee in order to sync with iCal...

I ended up just manually typing it in.

I hate to ask the cliche question, but I'm curious:

I ordered one of these and have never owned a iPhone before, I've exclusively used Android. Any tips or suggestions? My wife has an iPhone 8+ but never uses it to it's full potential.

Sorry for the late response for those who quoted me. I did not have the 11.1.2 firmware yesterday morning when my screen became unresponsive. Downloading it now.

Do Apple have plans for an OLED iPad?

Nope, sorry. Just not feasible yet.

Edit: yay, accidentally replying to an older post. The other replies got it. I think we need to see a lot more supply before we see 10"+ inch displays in volume, but Apple would probably have to fund those factories themselves at this point.

Why so complicated, just get Apples own case. I recommend the silicone one. It fits all of your criteria and feels amazing.

Talked to a woman today who impulse bought an iPhone X (drunkenly, as she later admitted) and wasn't totally confident she wanted to keep it. I was talking to her about a few features and showed her mine while describing. I unlock the phone and she goes "Oh, do you not use the face thing?" It caught me off guard and I'm like "Uh... that was the face thing. Just now."
